Mike Duffy: I 9 71 Thorpe Award Winner 1971 was a good year for the Chiefs' football team but it was an extraordinary season for Mike Duffy, Massapequa's star linebacker- running back. And the post season was even more extraordinary. Duffy went from virtual obscurity to a place on the most prestigious trophy in Nassau County football, Newsday's Tom Thorpe Memorial Award, given annually to the single best football player in the county. The list of past winners includes Jim Brown, Matt Snell, and John Mackey, so Duffy is in good company. Duffy was not a headline maker, making him an unusual recipient. He was mainly a blocking back. lt was his job to create the holes through which the headline makers - John O'Neill and Dave Van Nostrand - could run the ball. Of course, when Duffy ran the ball himself, he carried in the style of a truly outstanding football player. Massapequa High School has seen it's football teams honored many times. It has seen numerous division titles, two Rutgers Cups and countless players being named to All-South Shore, All-County, and All-Long Island teams. But Mike Duffy has brought the No. l award to Massapequa and you can't do any better than that. Duffy about to show his Thorpe winning style to Berner's Joe Quinn. 'I7
