I Massapequa's varsity football team ended the 1971 sea- son with a 7-1 record, placing second in S.S,A.L. Division l. The Chiefs started off with victories over East Meadow, Lawrence, and Baldwin. They then continued with wins over Sewanhaka, and Oceanside, setting up a showdown with Berner. The winner would capture the division title and ad- vance to the playoffs. Regulation time ran out with the game still scoreless. Ber- ner scored first in the overtime, giving the Chiefs one chance to try to score. Ernie Olsen hit Rich Barrett to bring the Chiefs to within 2 points, 8-6. The conversion attempt failed as Olsen's pass was deflected just as it was about to reach Mike Duffy's hands. The Chiefs lost the game and the division crown. Massapequa placed five players on post season all-star teams. Mike Duffy, John O'Neill, Bill Marino, Steve l-loffman, and Bill O'Donnell all were chosen for division honors. Duffy advanced to All County, All Long Island, and eventually won the Thorpe Award as the best player in the county.
