On September 24 and 25, 1971, the class of '72 presented its Senior Fair. Much hard work, along with enthusi- asm helped make our fair a most suc- cessful one. The usually bare parking lot became filled with many bright booths, cheerful seniors, and Saohem pretzels. Pie-in-the-eye, Marriage Booth, Wreck-a-oar, and Penny Pitch provided a wide range of entertain- ment and amusement for all. Who could think that any senior will ever forget the events of this unbelievable weekend? Many thanks to Mr. Kauf- man and Mrs. Powers, without whose support our fair never would have been possible. 11: 'v- 9? - -A v i' g .L -. il v L.. Af 1 Ki- JKKF' ,gf 5 9. N sq v x x s S+! Most classes decorate the gym for their Junior Prom, but ours voted to spend a day at the Four Seasons Country Club. All who attended enjoyed softball, ten- nis, golf and, especially, food. As an alternative to the traditional prom, Junior Day may become another institution at Massape- qua High School. We thank our advisors and officers for giving us the opportunity to spend a few enjoyable hours together. ,C x 4, r, 5 3 .. . .vm . ,..-:wg , he .. - 1if53f3:5:t w.Y:'y,g,: . The Sachem Staff would like to thank Miss Francese, our advisor, for contributing to the success of Sachem 1972. Her patience and inspiration has helped to make this year's yearbook the finest Ml-IS has ever seen. l-ler philosophy has always been that the yearbook belongs to the staff, but she always seems to be around when help is needed. Many thanks to Miss Francese. Mr. Wurthmann, our financial advisor, has been instru- mental in making this yearbook possible. His assistance in monetary matters is greatly appreciated by all. Representativeg Mary O'DonneIl, Secretary. Senior Council The class of '72 started its freshman year vvith the sale of combs and brushes. We did the traditional selling of candy in our sophomore year and magazines in our junior year. T-shirts were ordered to increase class spirit when vve were sophomores. One of the high points of our junior year was the time at which class rings arrived. This helped to make the likelihood of ever becoming a senior a reality. Our class was the first not to have a Junior Promg we are probably starting the new tradition of breaking old traditions. To the astonishment of most of us, our senior year finally arrived. The year started with plans for the successful Senior Fair. The class also worked hard on the unforgettable Senior Variety Show. The finale of our four years at MHS was the Senior Prom and Graduation. 22 9 RNA K ?va12?2-'g,f 1,113 4.V Y .v,.' f Q: fff'ffffffWf'fVf 3,gffg.c,g.g.g1.-pa-1.3fyzjpgzi.-' ig,-'g.i,q,.f ,.3f-k,.gfg,f,3.-9.-wg,-3 ,,.- - .--- v,y:,.-' ..f-,gg 9-,ff pg,-Q A my L.L- 5' Q? The editors have worked hard and suffered many headaches to make Sachem '72 a reality, and we hope that the effort expended is reflected in the final product. This year an amendment vvas added to their constitution, ac- cepting fifteen percent of the senior class instead of last year's ten per- cent. Aided by their advisors, Mrs. Flossiter and Mr. O'ConnelI, the Na- tional l-lonor Society sponsored a Dance Theater, the proceeds of which Went to The Mark Lustig Memorial Fund. This year we saw the first an- nual Halloween Dance and GO. Rock Concert, whose proceeds went for scholarships. Class Nite, the traditional interclass competition, was as usual a great deal ot fun, but most im- portant it was free. Not every school offers such a fun-filled night for nothing. The Executive Committee worked for a student lounge, the elimination of seniors' finals, and considered many other ideas. Though none of these motions were passed, the thoughts still remain behind, and maybe some year they will be instituted. Even though the GO. has not gotten as much done as it thought it would, their efforts are sure to be remembered as worthwhile in years to come. This year, Chief Chat has ex- panded its journalistic scope. The newspaper has set a trend to clear away the cobwebs from moribund school clubs and or- ganizations. The staff is bringing our school and students into the pace of 1972. First, Chief Chat reactivated the Massapequa High School Quill and Scroll Chapter, thus joining the half million members who wear the gold badge of the society throughout the world. They have also renewed ties with such prominent journalistic or- ganizations as the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Future Journalists of America, and the Nassau-Suffolk Scholas- tic Press Association. The key words this year have been contact and communica- tion. lt has only been through correspondence and rap-ses- sions with students all over the country that a meaningful under- standing of the year has been re- alized. we .- J ft! I Massapequa's varsity football team ended the 1971 sea- son with a 7-1 record, placing second in S.S,A.L. Division l. The Chiefs started off with victories over East Meadow, Lawrence, and Baldwin. They then continued with wins over Sewanhaka, and Oceanside, setting up a showdown with Berner. The winner would capture the division title and ad- vance to the playoffs. Regulation time ran out with the game still scoreless. Ber- ner scored first in the overtime, giving the Chiefs one chance to try to score. Ernie Olsen hit Rich Barrett to bring the Chiefs to within 2 points, 8-6. The conversion attempt failed as Olsen's pass was deflected just as it was about to reach Mike Duffy's hands. The Chiefs lost the game and the division crown. Massapequa placed five players on post season all-star teams. Mike Duffy, John O'Neill, Bill Marino, Steve l-loffman, and Bill O'Donnell all were chosen for division honors. Duffy advanced to All County, All Long Island, and eventually won the Thorpe Award as the best player in the county. Vin Mulshine C505 leads me WHY f0f John O'NeiII. S w 'tl Grim Massapequa bench late in the game l Mike Duffy: I 9 71 Thorpe Award Winner 1971 was a good year for the Chiefs' football team but it was an extraordinary season for Mike Duffy, Massapequa's star linebacker- running back. And the post season was even more extraordinary. Duffy went from virtual obscurity to a place on the most prestigious trophy in Nassau County football, Newsday's Tom Thorpe Memorial Award, given annually to the single best football player in the county. The list of past winners includes Jim Brown, Matt Snell, and John Mackey, so Duffy is in good company. Duffy was not a headline maker, making him an unusual recipient. He was mainly a blocking back. lt was his job to create the holes through which the headline makers - John O'Neill and Dave Van Nostrand - could run the ball. Of course, when Duffy ran the ball himself, he carried in the style of a truly outstanding football player. Massapequa High School has seen it's football teams honored many times. It has seen numerous division titles, two Rutgers Cups and countless players being named to All-South Shore, All-County, and All-Long Island teams. But Mike Duffy has brought the No. l award to Massapequa and you can't do any better than that. Duffy about to show his Thorpe winning style to Berner's Joe Quinn. Both of Massapequa's losses during the season were to Lawrence, who beat out the Chiefs for first place in South Shore l. The second loss took place be- fore an overflow crowd in the MHS gym. Though ahead most of the game, the Chiefs lost a heartbreak- er, 50-46. The defeat cost the Chiefs a share of the di- vision title. Massapequa entered the play-offs as the county's No. 5 team. ln the first round, they beat Bellmore Ken- nedy, setting up a second round matchup with South Side, the county's best team. The game was close all the way, with South Side eking out a 73-71 victory, ending Massapequa's best season ever. The team had many standouts. 6'9 center George Ritter culminated a three year varsity career with a 15 point average. One of the county's top big men, Ritter also consistently gave the Chiefs control of the boards. Junior co-captains Richie and Robbie Robinson car- ried most of the team's offense.
