Many outstanding performances, including the Home- coming Review, the Annual Winter Concert, and many other activities, drew favorable comments from their fellow cadets, visitors, guests, and local citizens. During the Spring Term, the band provides field music for the Sunday Retreat Parades. Band Company is called upon to play for many occasions in the Shenandoah Valley. The band each year participates in the Grand Feature Parade in con- nection with the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, held in Winchester, Virginia. In spite of the high caliber of the competition, the band has received many trophies. In addition, a group of the most advanced musicians of the band, are formed into an ensemble, specializing in concert type performances. Sports of all categories have not been neglected and the Intramural Robots won the basketball title. This years band is justly our pride and is among the best that MMA has ever seen. First row: Capt. Since merits are awarded for superior performance in all phases of the school program - exemplary conduct, honor grades in academic subjects, military proficiency, extra-curricular activities, etc. - it is felt that the most outstanding cadets will be those with the most merits. Any cadet who maintains the required number of merits is auto- matically a member of the club and is entitled to wear a distinctive white stripe on the sleeve of his uniform, to participate in the activities sponsored by patrons and alumni, and (upon graduation) to have his name engraved on the Thousand Merit Club Plaque which occupies a conspicuous place in the trophy room. MASSANUTTEN 13 FISHBURNE 19 After a stirring pre-game rally in the Lantz Hall Audi- torium, the Massanutten Flying Colonels, playing the first game of the season, were slightly outclassed by the Fishburne eleven. Massanutten remained scoreless throughout the first half, but picked up during the second half to hold the Fishburne team down. Few veterans returned from last year's squad to give ex- perience to the team, but on the whole, they did re- markably well. MASSANUTTEN 12 MERCERSBURG 44 In their first away game, the Massanutten eleven were snowed under by arch-rival Mercersburg Academy. Mercersburg controlled the game for three quarters, Herlinger, Jones, Henderson M, Hilborn, Lyons, Miller, Johnson E, Robinson, Bonner. and featured long runs and good passes. In the fourth quarter, Massanutten got into the scoring column with two touchdowns, one by halfback Bud Jones, and the other by quarterback Tom Bonner. MASSANUTTEN 0 BRIDGEWATER 33 In front of a capacity crowd of parents, guests, and cadets at Bowman Stadium, the Massanutten team met their third defeat at the hands ofthe Bridgewater College Freshmen. Bridgewater dominated the game most of the time, but MMA managed to make some real threats to their victory. Massanutten once got down to the Bridgewater 12-yard line, but could go no farther. The Bridgewater team was just too much for the MMA cadets. V2 rstl y MASSANUTTEN 8 AUGUSTA 30 In the fourth game of the season, against Augusta Military Academy, the cadets were disappointed by the heavier team. In the first quarter, Bob Jones went five yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Tom Bonner threw to Chuck Sledge for the extra two points. From then on, the game was pretty much Augusta's, but MMA offered a stout defense in the second half. MASSANUTTEN 6 VIRGINIA EPISCOPAL 9 In a muddy field battle at Lynchburg, Virginia, the Flying Colonels were beaten by a slim margin. The two evenly-matched teams fought well, and the game was a toss-up until the last. Halfbacks Bud Jones and Bob ALL Condatore, Abrams, Mayer, Wasson, Beck, McClure M, Gladwell, Sledge, Calvin. Abbey were the offensive stars for Massanutten. On defense, the MMA team's captain, Kenny Robinson, was all over the field checking Episcopal's rushes. MASSANUTTEN 36 CAROLINA ACADEMY 12 In the final game of the season in Bowman Stadium, the Massanutten eleven outplayed the Carolina Military Academy team by a good margin. Massanutten took a thirty-point lead in the first half of the game, and managed to keep most ofitthroughout. During the game, Coach Caia of MMA was able to employ a number of Jayvee stars who had moved up to varsity level, and they performed like veterans. Under the expert super- vision of Captains Stewart Kerchner and Richard Hosey, the Junior Flying Colonels undertook a season oftough competition. On October 3rd Massanutten was defeated by Augusta Military Academy. The first half of the game was played on fairly even terms as the defensive units of both teams contained the offense. However, A.M.A. pushed over one touchdown in the 3rd quarter and another in the 4th quarter to shut out Massanutten by a score of 14-0. Defensive stars for Massanutten were Odell Blake, Ernie Weatherholtz and Charlie Smiroldo. The next game on October 12th with Randolph- Macon was more encouraging. Again the defensive unit of MMA. played a superior game holding the R.MA. forces in their own territory for most of the game. The hard-fought game ended in a scoreless tie. Superior line play by Rod Derickson, Ken Stoudt, and Roger Buffaloe were the highlights of the game. The game with Fishburne Military School a prelude to homecoming was a real treat to MMA. fans. Hard running by Charlie Smiroldo, Ernie Weatherholtz, and Guy Brnilovich, with fine defensive line play by Clark Neff and Odell Blake, was enough to provide Massa- nutten with its first win of the season by a score of 27-7. On October 24th, Massanutten lost to Mercersburg Academy by a score of 24-0. In the first quarter, it seemed as if MMA. was going to pull a mild upset over a heavier Mercersburg team. With smart quarter- backing by Bill Allen and hard running by the offensive backs, MMA. had a sustained drive going which ended with a fumble on the boys from Pennsylvania controlled the ball and the game. On October 31st, the JVs journeyed to Waynesboro, Va., to again tackle Fishburne Military School. In this last game, MMA. was without the services of quarter- back Bill Allen. This hurt the team and MMA. could muster only one sustained drive all afternoon. F.MS. scored first but our superior line play once again con- tained the opposition. A 50-yard drive topped by a fine 30-yard pass-play from Weatherholtz to Estey saved M.M.A. from certain defeat and gave them their second tie of the season. First row: Muller W., Michaelis, White A., Muller R., Sage, Wilson J. Second row. Earley, Crum, Williamson T., Ehrensberger, Graham J., Capt. Stone, Coach; M Sgt Michaelis, Captain. Tucker. Third row: Williams, Trippe, Wettach, Abrams, Kasow, Morgan M., Captain Stone. Swimming The Massanutten Swimming Team, this year, came through with a good season of four wins and four losses, thanks to the coaching of Captain Richard Stone and the expert swimming of the team. The biggest event of the year was the Virginia Military Preparatory School Swimming Meet, in which Massa- nutten placed third. Ronald Muller placed second in the 400-yd freestyle and in the 200-yd freestyle. Siegfried Michaelis placed third in the 100-yd freestyle. William Muller placed first in the breaststroke. Other swimmers on the team were: Siegfried Michaelis, 100-yard butter- fly, backstroke, breaststroke, and 200-yard freestyle; Jack Graham, 50-yard freestyle, and 100-yard freestyle. Other swimmers during the season were: Crum, Will- iamson T., White A., Wettach, Abrams, Thompson, Ehrensberger, Sage, Trippe, Tucker, and Allen. Divers included: Earley, Wilson J., Kasow, and Kitch. Varsity Wasketha lH Massanutten's Flying Colonels completed their 1962-63 basketball season with a second. of 10 wins against 12 losses in facing a rugged schedule. The highlight of the season was Massanutten's win in the ee round of the Virginia's Military League tournament oyer a highly favored Staunton Military Academy five. Massanutten upended Staunton in a real thriller 59 to58 when John Susce dropped in a free throw with four seconds remaining in the oe Susce led all scorers in the contest with a spectacular shooting exhibition to garner 39 points but it was a team victory in every sense. MMA'S other big win during the season was a 68 to 59 verdict over a fine Hargrave five which was runner- up in the Virginia's Military League and a heartbreaking 50 to 48 loss to the League champions, Fork Union Military Academy. John Susce was the big offensive star for MMA and was also the leading rebounder, and was selected to a position on the All League Team. Susce averaged 25.6 points per game during the league play. Clyde Bryant gave a hand in the rebounding department and was the outstanding dcensive star for the MMA five. The loss of Bryant due to a leg injury late in the season undoubtedly was a big blow to the team and was generally recognized as the contributing cause to several of the losses that came after Bryant was no longer in the line up. Bud Jones backed Susce up in the scoring department and finished the year as the second leading scorer on the club. Lynn Hay, Lynn Hogg, Mike Henderson, and Harry Herlinger also were strong contributing factors to the success ofthe Massanutten cause. Charlie Theurer, Tom McClure, Dan Hardy, Bill Williamson, and Bill Russek rounded out the varsity squad and did their part when called upon. Staunton Military Academy 54 Rod Derickson, back-court man ofthe team, led the individual scorers Fishburne Military School Sia with 89 points. He was followed by Brooke Henehan, the team captain, Mercersburg Academy 52 who garnered 73 points. Ron Souders completed the season with 64, Staunton Military Academy 75 and Bob Hanna ee 48 points.
