MUSTER 1988 Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts 02532 MAIL ROOM DEDICATION The Class of 1988 would like to dedicate their Yearbook to Gerry I Giordano — Mrs. G . Every day she greeted us with a smile to give us our mail, and when we didn ' t get mail she always had the right thing to say to cheer us up. Mrs. G came to Mass. Maritime in January of 1980. Being a retired hairdresser, she wanted a job to keep busy, and keep her busy we did! She is leaving us to retire with her husband in Florida. Mass. Maritime I is not just losing a hard worker, but a good friend. We wish her many I happy and relaxing years in her retirement. Our opponents were Curry College who we were looking to pay back for a close loss back in the 1986 season. Despite an outstanding effort by the Buc defense, a few big plays by Curry cost us the game. We had to put this one behind us be- cause our next opponent was Maine Mari- time Academy up in Castine. For the third year in a row the Buc ' s came out of Castine with the Admiral ' s Cup. For the seniors the Cup has been here our whole careers. The combination of good offensive play and an- other solid defensive effort led by a Tim January interception for a TD was the dif- ference. Michols, the next week back home on Parent ' s Day, is one of the game this year that is hard to forget. A last minute touch- down by Nichols gave the Bison ' s a tough faught 14-10 victory. Coach told us there were five more games left in the season and next week we started our divisional games with Fitchburg St., so put this one behind us. Fitchburg St. was a better team than their ' 8 record showed. The Buc ' s came out of Fitchburg with a close 15-7 victory. Jaime Roberge was the key to this game with a touchdown and a two point conversion both on bad snaps. We evened our record to 2-2. The next week we were back on our home field for Homecoming vs. Westfield St. The way the Bucs came out it looks like we were unstoppable. We went into the Locker room with a 9-6 half-time lead. In the second half we just broke down and when the final whistle sounded we were Looking at a 2-3 record. Bridgewater St. was the highlight of the season. This game and Maine Maritime are our two big games of the year. This was the 9th annual Cranberry Bowl between Bridgewater St. and Massachusetts Mari- time Academy. The seniors have not known a year when the scoop was not in the Buc trophy case and we did not plan on losing it. At the end of the first half the chances of the Buc ' s retaining the scoop looked dim. We were down 17-0. In the locker room we said we had nothing to lose and let ' s go play Like we know we can. With seconds to play Dan Lewis kicked a field goal to take the lead 18-17. The Buc ' s once again had the scoop . Framingham St. was the most solid game of the season for us. With a touch- down from Nardone to Red on our opening possession we had the Lead and never Looked back. We went on to win 28-7 and raise our record over .500 for the first time this year. Just as important as us winning this game was Bridgewater St. beating Westfield St. 35-7. this meant that next week when the Bucs travel to Worchester St. the game will be for the South Division championship game. We came out strong, and at half-time we were up 12-0. The second-half we fell apart and ended up losing 31-18. Even though we Lost this game the seniors and under- classmen were proud of our season. We ended up our season 4-4 keeping coaches non-losing season streak alive. Obviously we would have loved to go on and play in the NEFC championship but it just wasn ' t in the cards and life must go on. Good Luck to the ' 88 Bucs. 65 76. . 79 i i2 2 66j|Slg88 M|78|§9||4g mm 47 50 i Captained by Bill Doherty Paul Millette The 1 988 Lacrosse Team captained by Bill Doherty and Paul Millette celebrated its best record in 1 1 years of 8-3. In 1 988 and ' 87 the Lacrosse team had the most win- ningest record of all the Varsity sports. The team with a good nucleus of seniors such as the two captains and Walter i mention all America. The credit for the sea- son ' s success goes to the whole team, es- pecially those that were on the sideline and gave you a pat on the back and an atta boy. That made it a total team victory. o_BUCC NEER CchI 56 I MMA Rugby Fall 1987 games aSCGA at Mm 4-4 tie MMA at Roger Williams 21-4 win Johnson and Wales at MMA 18-6 win Maritime Tournament MMA vs. Maine Maritime 12-10 win MAAA vs. New York Maritime 18-6 win Cruise MMA vs. Barbados 12-10 win Record 5-0-1 The 87-88 season was the most suc- cessful for the Mass. Maritime Rugby Club in many years. Our one tie came from a close game with the Coast Guard Academy (Division II champions of M.E.R.F.G.). The rugby team officially entered the union which will insure higher quality competition for years to come. Mass. Maritime was also the host of the second annual maritime rugby tourna- ment, with N.Y. Maritime and Maine Mari- time as our guests. It was a weekend to re- member as the Buccaneers took first place. Good Luck to the Rugby Club in the future from the Class of 1 988. Show those Ivy boys what real Rugby is!!! Coach Advisor — Lt. The Bucs did not fail to provide excitement, and proved to be able to draw large crowds for their home games. Four year veteran Bill Heeney was elected Captain this year and other top seniors included J Henderson, Artie Lonergan, John Maff( J.J. Cummings, Bob Downey and Mi Purcell. High hopes are held for next yee team. Good Luck! 73 BIG BROTHER, BIG SISTER PHOTO CLUB 75 The boxing club had three fight nights on I hope this will continue the boxing tradi- cruise this year. All three were a great sue- tion on cruise as a good time for all. cess. Appreciation and thanks goes to all Special thanks to Lt. Duggan for his time, those that helped to make it a success. Es- effort and help and his interest in getting the pecially to those that helped us get the mat fights off the ground, from the gym and then back down there William F. Doherty again. President, Boxing Club 1988 BOXIMG CLUB 76 78 RIFLE TEAM Did you win last night? No, When was the last time you won? About two and a half years ago. This is pretty much what a typical Tues- day morning is like for the Mass. Maritime pistol team. The team record is terrible but they still enjoy shooting against the other teams in the Cape Cod Pistol League. The Academy is the only school in the League and is one of only two teams with females on the Firing line. Maritime shoots both its home and away matches at the range in the gymnasium. The range, according to the team ' s op- ponents, is the finest in the League. The members of the opposing teams are older and more experienced than the cadets. They average 1 5-20 years shooting experience, whereas Maritimers average about 1 year of shooting experience, whereas Maritimers average about 1 year of shooting experience. Consequently, the war veterans and gunshop owners are a most always better shots than the cadet therefore, maritime repeatedly gets its [B PLETIVE] kicked. Team Captain D.S. McNamara pride himself on being the recipient of th League ' s 1986-87 6th place (out of teams) trophy. Last year ' s team worke hard to earn its 0-24 record. He eager awaits receipt of a similar award for th 1987-88 season. In an effort to upgrade its equipment, th team is selling its current firearms, Hig Standard .22 caliber long rifle pistols, to bi new Smith and Wesson Model 41 .22 ca ber long rifle pistols. It is doubtful that new firearms will in prove the team ' s scores, but deep with their souls, they retain hope that mayb someday, somehow, they might, on an ol side, one in a million, slimmer than nor win a match. 82 HONOR QUARC 84 SEMI- FORMAL 87 88 corJiat Li bujLtsxl to atteiiJ tlis.
