f IN MEMORIAM OGER E. CARON, 46, a professor tor 14 ' ears in the Marine Engineering department lied unexpectedly in March at Tohey Hospi- al in Wareham ot a heart attack. 4e was horn in Sandwich, Mass. and at- ended Sandwich schools. In 1963, hegradu- ited from Massachusetts Maritime Academy vith a Bachelor ot Science degree in Marine ind Electrical Engineering. CDR Caron legan his career upon graduation as an en- jineer with Moore-McCormack Lines. In .970, he joined the Woods Hole, Martha ' s ineyard Nantucket Steam Ship Autho- ity, where he worked until joining the cademy in 1973. n his years as a professor at the Academy, he ichieved nationwide recognition as a top narine engineer. He was also known as an ' Xpert in his field and was consulted on mar- ne engineering matters hy all of the vlaritime Academies, as well as variiius ship- ling companies. He was alsti a major con- ultant to the U.S. Coast Guard in reorgani:- ng the marine engineering License structure in the United States. Among his many accomplishments, CDR Caron designed the Rodney C. Morris Diesel Engine Room Simulatt)r, the first of it ' s kind in the United States. He served as a profes- sional engineering advisor at the New York Maritime Academy, where he participated in the accreditation ot their marine engineering program. His Marine Engineering Study Guides for Third Engineer Through Chief Engineer, first Puhlished in 1978 have hecome instru- mental in prelicensing study. While at the Academy, CDR Caron received the Distinguished Service Award in 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1983 tor many cttntrihutions to the Academy Corps ot Cadets. He was promoted to tull protessor in 1981. Under CDR Caron ' s leadership and direction, Massachusetts Maritime engineering cadets attained the hest licensing record in the coimtry tor the past ten years. CDR Caron was a memher ot the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the U.S. Naval Reserve, the Frlcnd ot the Nobska Committee and the Ma sachusets Maritime Academy Alumni Association. CDR Caron can never he replaced. He was respected hy all, triends and cadets, past and present, as well as his peers for his expertise, dedication and inspiration. We would like to dedicate the 1987 Muster to CDR Roger E. Caron as a thanks for his contributions to this Academy that will never be forgotten. 3
