Maritime Band and Jazz Band was marked by the departure of Band Leader Mr. Frank Fuller. Frank, otherwise known as Hans Fueller, U-Boat Commander and all around old salt, left the academy this February. Mr. Fuller claimed he needed a change of pace as reading the Sunday paper all day every Sunday is not exceptionally good for ones mental stability. All kidding aside, the band wishes Mr. Fuller well and hopes his job as Director of Music at Bridgewater-Raynham is both challenging and rewarding. The band is now looking to build upon the already strong Jazz Band and rebuild the Marching Band. 18 The Propeller Club made unprecedented accomplishments during the 1986-1987 school year. The greatest show of spirit came with the raising of money for the Statue of Liberty restoration and rededication ceremony held on July 4, 1986. The two year project of fundraising gave the Mass. Maritime Academy Propeller Club the distinction of raising more money for the project than any other school in the Nation. Club President Scott Corsano along with club officers John Babineau, Tom Trefny, Arthur Lonergan and James Mclnnis accepted on behalf of the Propeller Club a check for $5,000.00 to be applied towards scholarships for their outstanding work on the Liberty project. During the busy year the Club sponsored a lecture on the Andrea Doria Stockholm disaster given by speaker John Carrothers. The monthly Port of Boston Propeller Club dinners were also attended by club members on a regular basis. The Propeller Club has set new goals for the next couple of years, a memorial is being planned for the area just outside the Chapel. The memorial is planned to stand in the memory of all Merchant Mariners past and present. Fund raising has already begun and will continue until enough funding is available to begin building the memorial. This will be a landmark that all people may enjoy, especially Alumni. The Society of Na al Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) is an internationalK ' recognized non-profit, technical, professional Society of individnal nienihers serx ing the maritime and offshore industry and its supphers. SNAME is dedicated to advancing the jart, science and practice of naval architecture, shipbuilding and marine engineer ing, encouraging the exchange and recording of information, sponsoring applied research, offering career guidance and supporting education, and enhancing the professional status and integrity of its membership. Activities this year included a trip to New York City to attend the National SNAME exposition of the new and up-and-coming modern advances in the Maritime field. The student section at Mass Maritime Academy also started the Annual North East Student section dinner meeting which included participation by Maine Maritime, Kings Point, M.I.T. , and Coast Chiard. Speaker for that evening was Captain Robert Bowen, Master of the Research Vessel Knorr, which found the wreck of the Titanic. Overall, the year was very exciting for all involved, and will continue to be so in upcoming years. Chairman — 1 C John Cox Vice-Chairman — 1 C Douglas Dias Secretary — 1 C Bruce Patrick Treasurer — 1 C Chris Meyers Sergeant at Arms — 2 C Shawn Fowler Assistant Sergeant at Arms — Greg Garafolo Activities Coordinator — Sean O ' Connor Asst. Activities Coordinator — John Piscionera s The Veterans Club is a social and service organization for cadets who are Veterans of our Armed Forces. Members include former Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Airmen, and Coastguardsmen. This dynamic group volunteers time and man power to advance Academy related service projects such as; donations to charities, displaying of the Prisoner of War Flag along with the colors, and the sponsoring of lectures concerning and of interest to Veterans, as well as hold- ing regular social events for its members. A I The American Institute of Plant En- gineers (AIPE) cadet chapter was begun under the supervision of Mr. Russo and Capt. Wilson. Its primary function is to ex- pose engineers to various employment opportunities and to make available in- formation pertaining to the engineering field. The charter officers leave behind a club with purpose and unHmited potential, a legacy for future classes. 26 28 Y A C H T C L U B During 1986-87, the Academy Yacht Chih acciuired a new yacht called Arieto, a 46 ' Frers, well known in the racing circuit from Marblehead to Newport. This past summer the Yacht Club Members were employed on several yachts. The Windlass was overhauled and participated in Operation Sail ' 86 in New York. The Cadet Pride raced in Quincy Bay Race Week and received an award. She also acted as a representative for the Academy by escorting guests around the Boston Area. This Memorial Day weekend the Yacht Club is participating in the Figawi Race from Hyannis to Nantucket. We are entering the Arieto, renamed the Eighty-Six, and the Cadet Pride. We expect to do quite well if not win outright. For 1987-88, the Cadet Pride will be in Boston again and the Eighty-Six will be racing out of Beverly. B O X I N G C L U ] The 1986-87 year was a good year for the boxing club. The equipment was used well by a large number of students. The club practically ran itself after the extraordinar ' efforts of the last two club presidents, John Merrigen and Victor Mendez. The junior class will inherit a well stocked and maintained club as well due to the fine efforts of the class of 1987 boxing club committee. Boxing Nights on the cruise were again possible due to the level of interest the students displayed. 30 c L U B H O C K E The Academy s Club Hockey Team played a competitive schedule against some old and new foes. Chuck Barhanti was elected Captain and led by his example. The season started with two wins against King ' s Point, (6- 3, 5-3). We hosted the Kings Pointers at the academy and ne.xt year ' s team will benefit with a home series against both King ' s Point and Fort Schuyler. Other victories were against Brandeis and 4 C ' s, with losses to Curry, Nichols and MIT. Home games were played at Gallo Arena and cadet attendance was encour- aging. One thing we won ' t miss are those 6 a.m. practices at Gallo Arena with CDR Mike Joyce, Lt. Nate Nickerson and their on ice drill instructors. Top senior per- formers were Ken Moran, Sean Thomp- son, Rob Duseau, Joe Donovan, John Marcille, Tom McHugh and Amby Hayes. In summary, we had a pleasant if abbre- viated season with high hopes for next years team. This year there was 205 accepted applicants. Also this year was the first year that orientation was held on board the Patriot State. It started out with a lot of screaming and push-ups, but they were taught well and learned from their mistakes. Each company worked hard to push their team to number one. Each da ' would start out with calisthenics at 0530, then a quick two minute cold shower, be read) for inspection in 15 minutes and form up outside for breakfast. The days followed with picking up clothing issue, marching practice, different classroom lectures, intramural games between companies, firefighting, swimming and much much more. By the end of the tw o weeks the cadet candidates learned to be squared awa , work as a team, live without hair and see what it takes to be a real seaman and 38 HALLOWEEN As traditioi) once again prevails on Halloween the fourth class had to dress up in the Halloween costumes when they went down to the Mess Deck for the even- ing meal. Upon making their grand en- trance they would go up on stage and dunk for apples, while the upper class watched and recalled their freshman year Hallo- ween dinner. 41 42 SOPHOMORES The sophomores showed their strength this year. There was a lot of hard work in class, and a lot to put up with out of class. With the ship gone, there were fewer watches and no niaintainance, but some classes were made more difficult with no ship to refer to. Cleaning stations were still never ending, but this time they gave stripes for doing them. Classes got worse, and there always seemed to be more work to do. At the end of second semester, rumors started to fly, then it was learned that they weren ' t just rumors. The redtag rebellion was started to Say NO to Cruise ' . The entire Sophomore class stood together to say that they didn t want to, couldn ' t wouldn t go on cruise. Reasons were given and for once, the Administration listened and gave in. The non-e.xistant cruise ' 87 became optional. The redtags stood together and showed that they are a class above the rest. 44 JUNIORS The Juniors, a class which stands out by itself, this year continued coming up with different ways to raise money for their Ring Dance. Having class cookouts, organized parties with other colleges and enjoying the privilege of using the Fantail were among a few of the social events partici- pated in by the class. With one year left the Class of 1988 became psyched but were left up in the air like everyone else with the cancelled cruise. The Commercial Ship- ping Program was cut short for some to allow for the seniors to get their sea time and others with almost no time to plan had to get on a plane and go to Texas and join Te.xas A M for their summer cruise. Upon returning to the Academy in mid-August from cruise, next years officers would have to jump right into orientation leaving no break. 46 51 o Over the Fourth of July 1986, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy participated in the festivities celebrating the one hundred year anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The PATRIOT STATE was given a berth of honor at pier one in Brooklyn (directly adjacent to the George Washington Bridge) because the Academy, led by Captain Al Wilson and the Propeller Club, raised more money for the restoration work on the statue than any other college, university, or school in the country. Invitations went out to many of the top people in the Academy ' s support systems and in the state governme with over one hundred and sixty distinguished congressmen, regents trustees, alumni, and honored guest attendance for the cruise from Buzzards Bay to New York. Highlights of the trip included nightly band concerts by the Academy Band, the parade of sail, the visi to the aircraft carrier KENNEDY (Captain Moriarity, MM A, Class of ' 59, Commanding Officer) and of course the spectacular fireworks display on July 4th The Party Flag flew during the entire trip and even the cadet galley slaves had a fantastic time. 54 55 CRUISE ' 86 The Mystery Cruise i - -flFT- LAUDERDALE, FL lUiJ JACKSONVILLE, FL ' DUBLIN, IRELAND PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND NOW WHERE ARE WE?!? All our preseason work was displayed in our season opener against Western New England College. The Bucs were lead to a 44-15 trouncing of W.N.E.C. by quarterback Jeff Gorski. The next week the Bucs travelled to Castine, Maine to fight for the Admiral ' s Cup. Both teams battled it out, but at the final whistle it was the Bucs 17-9 and the cup went back to B. Bay for the fifth straight year. The first loss was in game no. 3 against Framingham State College. However, with errorless offense and defense the Bucs fought hard in the second half to come back within three. Time ran out and the Bucs went down 18-21. Week four meant a trip to Plymouth, N.H. against the Panthers o Plymouth State. We battled to a 0-0 halftime score but fell 0-10 with late second half scores by Plymouth. In game five, the Bucs played their first Friday Night game against Westfield State College. The Bucs record fell to 2-3 with a 8-17 loss to the Owls. W ' e got our minds back on football and the annual Cranberr ' Bowl. M.M.A. and B.S.C. went after the scoop but in the end it was the Bucs who held on, as the game ended 14-14. Game seven was the first meeting between Mass. Maritime and Worcester State College. The Bucs went to Worcester on their homecoming and came away with a 23-3 victory. We continued to roll as we defeated Nichols College 15-12. Game nine came on a cold, rainy, Saturday afternoon. Mike Feeney tip-toed his way into the end zone on a nice interception, George Lagos not only blocked the punt but scored in the process, Chris Myers rushed for 140 first-half yards and lets not forget Petro s I don t have the ball ... he does play. The final: Mass. Maritime 33, Fitchburg O. The season came to a close with Mass. Maritime hosting Curr ' College. Curry, as the no. 2 team in the league, jumped out to a 0-21 halftime lead. The Bucs regroup during halftime and fought back to take a 22-21 fourth quarter lead. The comeback was made possible by an unyielding defense and some outstanding passing and receiving. However, as the game came to and end the Colonels managed another score and took a 22-27 victory. We ended the season at 5-4-1, not great but good enough to keep coach ' s winning season streak alive. 78 OOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL M M A. 44 Western New England 15 M.M.A. 17 Maine Maritime 9 M.M.A. 18 Framingham State 21 M.M.A. 0 Plymouth State 10 M.M.A. 8 Westfield State 17 M.M.A. 14 Bridgewater State 14 M.M.A. 23 Worcester State 3 M.M.A. 15 Nichols 12 M.M.A. 33 Fitchburg State 0 M.M.A. 22 Curry 27 ALL CONFERENCF N. With the help of Tommy, we got all the boats in the water just in time for our first meet. From there, so to speak, was Smooth Sailing . With at least two meets every weekend, we were busy from September to the first weekend in November. Practices were held every day — no matter what mother nature had to throw at us. Practices con- sisted of starts with windward leg and then back to the start again, then at least 3 full races. We took turns sailing in the 420 ' s and tech dinghy ' s since most of our meets were sailed in both kinds of boats. I would like to thank everyone for the time they put in. I know it was a hectic schedule, but wait until ne.xt year. A spe- cial thanks to Tommy Tucker and Red R ' an who gave us alot of their time and support. 1986 — Sailing Team 89 VOLLEYBALL VOl COACHES Francis Ferinino Sue Cn)sl)y CAPTAINS Kathleen Kane Kelly McGrath MANAGER Tom Russo With the assistance of the two new olleyball coaches, Fran Fermino and Sue Crosby, the women ' s volleyball team had an exciting season. Although actual wins were hard to come by, the team improved greatly as their season progressed. Led by Senior Co-Captains Katie Kane and Kelly McGrath, the female Bucs were an en- thusiastic and dedicated bunch. The players and coaches selected awards to be given at the end of the season. Most team spirit went to freshman Fulvia Scales, a very inspirational player with great promise. Alicia Cox received the most im- proved award for her hard work and unend- ing determination. Katie Kane, the anchor of the team, was undeniably the most dedi- cated player who expected the most from herself and her follow teammates. The most valuable player award went to a tough competitor, Kelly McGrath. The team greatly appreciates the time, hard work and support the coaches demon- strated. Their eflForts helped to keep the volleyball program alive. May this dedica- tion of both players and coaches continue for years to come to support women ' s sports here at Mass Maritime Academy. 91 X-COUNTRY X-COUNTRY X-COUNTRY X-COUNTR This years team, composed of a core of dedicated runners, produced outstanding performances from all. They had been plagued with injuries, but still ended up defeating some keyrivals. This years team will say good bye to seniors Kevin Crimi, Edward Kelleher, Linda Letoumeau, Robert O ' Brien and Kevin Poyant. Next years ' squad has a promising future with the returning sophomores and freshman. Never Forget: Tea ticker shuffle, static contractions Bourne track, stair cases and canal runs HEAD COACH Paul B. Phinnev ASST. COACH Bob Black CAPTAINS Kevin Poyant Linda Letourneau 92 NIS TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS TE COACH Stephen Waisgerber CAPTAINS Doug Mignosa Doug Dias Maritime tennis enjoyed its best season in recent memory achieving a 500 record. Coach Steve Waisgerber ' s radical coaching methods seemed to be taking the team in the right direction. Bolstered by freshmen stand-outs Steve McCauley, Steve Nikita Kruska, and Robert the Junkman MacGregor, MMA tennis came screaming out of the cellar and into respectability-. Losing only captains Doug Dias and Doug Mignosa, and returning 1 player Scott Conan Travers MMA tennis looks to make a serious run at the State College Championship. 93 COASTIES With a spring cruise schedule planned, Coast Guard Exams were going to he held hefore the sea requirements were fuUfilled. The exam dates were set for April 14, 15, 16 17. Semester classes started in January along with other classes. The deckies were working hard preparing while some engineers were taking it easy hoping for a gift from God. A shocker for all was the passing away of Roger Caron one month before the exams. The Class then had to really work and prepare for the final episode which would lead to their License. Not all passed the first time but because of the arrangements made with the cancelled cruise the Coast Guard would return in May. Teachers of both engineering and transportation held seminar, had private tutoring and would help out in any way possible to see the Class of 1987 prevail. Much gratitude is extended to all teachers who helped out, it couldn ' t have been done without your support. itmA i ftr t if ( ' HM .Ot ttrt illitum t if loteAau t ' xirtwt . 77u ' ' ' Aimr uHiJt on { :? You have been fortunate to have enjoyed and experienced your education here at the Academy and we, too, have benefited from your matriculation. You will now find our alumni remarkably unified and supportive of one another - the by-product of a shared experience in a small and unique institution. As you travel afar, you will sometimes wonder if MMA has ceased to exist. Small colleges are like that, situated somewhere between memories and location on a map. Look back with fondness and ahead with hope. The best is yet to come. When I returned to MMA in 1981, I found that I was recaptivated by an ins titution with a distinctive past of which I had earlier been a part, and one with enormous potential for the future. In one sense, the Academy was well established as the nation ' s oldest, continuously operating maritime academy dating back to its days as the Massachusetts Nautical School in Boston. In another sense, it was really still young and progressive, a college with great potential to achieve its newly defined goals and traditions. Be proud of your affiliation with the Academy as we are proud of you and your achievements. I am proud to have shared these last four years with you. For this, the first part of your life there has been a singular, all consuming goal - education. Those times have been so filled with activities there has been little chance to stop and contemplate why you were even in school. Now you must take a look at the world and decide what to make of your lives. You will all have different solutions to the attainment of your goals. For some the search for self understanding and fulfillment ends with graduation. For others its an ongoing process that becomes a part of their lives. Some may think this ongoing process is unproductive, but for those who choose to make the effort, the spoils are worth the cost of the hunt. You are well equipped to prosper in this everchanging world. You will find the lessons of life and the bonds of friendship that developed these past four years will serve you well through your lifetime, and the affinity you feel now for both the Academy and your classmates will flourish in the coming decades. I wish you a love of travel. It ' s an old idea, but the country you learn most about by traveling abroad is your own - but some old ideas bear repeating. Go with confidence. Prize tolerance and common sense. And sometime, somewhere along the way, do something meaningful for your country. On behalf of the faculty and the Academy family, I wish you all success and happiness . Good sailing and fair winds, Uohn F. Aylmer Rear Admiral, USMS President 164 I? 7 I Publication of the 1987 Muster has just become history.
