From Company Officer to Head Football Coach to Career Placement Director. Captain Wilson has clearly been involved with student life at MMA. Starting m 1972 as Company Officer, he worked hand in hand with the Cadet Regiment, teaching leadership and responsiblities. As Chief Mate of the Training Ship, he worked more exclusively with Deck Cadets, preparing them to be Mates. Moving up from Assistant Com- mandant to Assistant to the President, rank did not pull him away from Cadets, but tied him closer to us. striving to help us reach our goals. Now, as Placement Director, he is working for our futures, the most important part of our life here at MMA. We came to MMA alone- just old enough to have a past, yet still scrambling for identity and accep- tance. We came with tentative plans for a permanent future. Unmold- ed. We came with a dream, with your help our dreams our in reach. Thank You. MASSACHUSETTS 02532-1803 Board ol Regonls of Higher Education TO THE CLASS OF 1984 Four sometimes hectic and difficult years have now passed and the graduates of the Class of 1984 stand at the threshold of life. That life, that career, that future will most certainly be enhanced by way of the personal qualities that each and every one of you have acquired by way of hard work and perseverance. You and I are particularly cognizant of the sweat equity - the toil and the tears associated with the years past. In spite of their difficulty, those years and the lessons learned will serve you well! There really isn ' t a task that any one of you will now hesitate taking on. The challenges of life will be eagerly accepted and the usual pride associated with your Buccaneer background will enable you to rise steadily to the top, whatever your station in life. The good memories of MMA will be lasting and your classmates will be friends forever, a literal professional and social resource in time of need. The close unit you represented collectively as a class will never really disintegrate, but moreover will be strengthened and revisited in the years ahead. Life Is always, of course, what you make of it. As a graduate of the Academy you now possess many tools to make your life a resounding success. You enjoy the resiliency to adjust, the gritty perseverance to stick it out, and the intellec- tual capacity to sort it out! Getting along with others is an early Academy lesson well learned, and I am sure you will a-ply this advantage to its fullest extent as you sail the world ' s oceans and ply your way down life ' s varied path. As you embark on the career you have chosen and scatter to the four corners of the world, you will carry with you valuable Massachusetts Maritime Academy credentials. Your Alma Mater will be anxiously and proudly watching you climb the ladder of success. In doing so, you will negotiate all of the rungs based on your courage, determination, and ability. I urge you to be observant, learn from others along the way, and retain pride in all of your undertakings. The doing of one ' s duty, even though it sometimes may seem commonplace, embodies the highest ideals of life and good character. Remember as well that additional knowledge will always be advantageious to you throughout your life - subscribe to acquiring all that you possibly can! The Faculty and the Academy family join with me in wishing you all success and happiness. Your home, your community, your state and nation expect great things of you. Partaking in both a Summer and Winter shipping list, cadets have sailed on both U.S. and Foreign Flag Ships. Cadets sailing with the program have acquired skills, ex- perience and practical knowledge of shipboard life and on the job training in todays Merchant Ma- rine. T radiiion dictates that each cadet ' s eUiss ring be worn about the neck of his or her escort on a length of ribbon until the ceremony of the ring. Duruig this ceremony, the ring is dipped by the couple in a binnacle filled with water repre- senting the waters of the seven seas. By doing this, the cadet marries the sea symbolizing his or her commitment to the maritime profession. The rin , is then placed on the cadet ' s finger and the couple kisses. The entire ceremony takes place in a large replica of a class ring. 170 173 175 1 i _ ■H Commencement Class Of 1 4 AWARDS 1. BOSTON SHIPPING ASSOCIATION, INC.. AWARDS Presented by Robert M. His untimely death came as a great shock to all who knew and loved him. In life Neil was a young man who had sincere concern for the well being of those around him. Respected by both his instructors and his peers, he could always be counted on to handle himself in a professional manner and to complete any task assigned to him. A true friend, a credit to his family, school, and country, we render a final salute to Neil T. Begley, II, knowing we will never forget him. May God protect Neil on the seas of heaven. 208 n w4 i I
