Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1983 volume:

DEDICATION Mr. Youcis, as a company officer dealt on a personal level with the regiment of cadets. He saw that the Academy Regulations were upheld to make for the proper environment to live, learn, discover, and experience. Outside of the classroom, academy lifestyle is geared to teach us to be leaders in a working environment and to learn to take orders from superiors and to give orders and act in quick response to situations of emergency as well as day to day living. Mr. Youcis aided us in this way and went beyond. He used his extra knowledge to guide us in career choices and job opportunities. His well-rounded educational background enabled him to counsel us in a wide area of problems which face a college student. He worked for the success and growth of the S.G.A. and extended his interests and views to many activities on campus. Thank you. The Senior Class ' 83 ANDREW C. They travelled to Norfolk, Virginia, Lisbon, Portugal, Barcelona, Spain, Portland, Maine and of course beautiful Cas- tine. Maine. CRUISE 83 SUN CRUISE BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS; VERACRUZ, MEXICO; NEW ORLEANS, LA; PORT EVERGLADES, PL 106 1982 COMMERCIAL Every cadet believes that the commercial shipping program is the way to learn the ropes, and for most of the cadets this is true. Cadets did not only learn how the automated engine room runs and a 4-man crew mans the bridge (instead of the 15 or so on the training cruises), but they traveled to all four corners of the world. On the Atlantic, shipping cadets were found in ports of call from the Arctic Circle to Cape Horn, South America and from New York to the Straits of Gibraltar. On the Pacific, The ports of call for MMA sailors were from Alaska to Australia and from Pcinama to Singapore. Presented here are a few of the special moments for the cadets. 110 The Diesel Simulator was dedicated to the memory of 4 C Cadet Rodney C. Morris on 6 November, 1982. Rod- ney was a true friend to his classmates. He held a quiet pride in all that he did cind was able to instill that pride in others. We are thankful for all that he shared with us. Rodney will long be remembered and missed and we are pleased that his close association with his class and his school has been made permanent. RODNEY C. Ok. - We ' ve got water, but A change of command where ' s the fire FRESHMEN In September of 1982, the class of 1986 was unprepared for the chal- lenges and expectations of the Massa- chusetts Maritime Academy. This new environment was a very unexpected change; however the freshmen have met and accepted the challenges un- der the guidance of the first class. The cruise of 1983 was another exper- ience for the freshmen enabling then to become true Bucs . It was a time when a tremendous amount of knowl- edge of the marine industry was learned and a time which brought the freshmen class closer. With these first challenges has come a strong unity which will certainly last for the coming 3 years. Which one is Moby? RING DANCE THE RING DANCE TRADITION Next to graduation tiself, the ring dance is the highlight of the year for the Senior Class at Masa- athusftts Maritime Academy Tradition dictates ihat each cadet ' s class nng be worn about the neck of his or her escort on a length of ribbon until the ceremony of the ring. During this crrrmony, the ring u dipped by the couple in a binnncle filled with wdter repre- senting the waters of the seven seas By doing this, the cadet marrxa the sea symboliztru} his or her commitment to the niantwic profession The ring is then placed on the cadet ' s finger and the couple kuses The entire ceremony takes place tn a large replica of a clasx ring. WORDS OF WISDOM We will not tolerate human wreckage! Never turn your backs to her. She ' s still our ship. 125 GRADUATION lios I o I ' rciiiu AltMs l 1 1 ri ' lVi , ASM H I Al 1( i INI .
