In 1891 the Legislature of the Common- wealth of Massachusetts approved the or- ganization and charter of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Under the sails of the Enterprise , and later the Nantucket , the Academy grew, producing men of the highest caliber in the arts of Seamanship, Naviga- tion, and Marine Engineering. The E NTERPRISE The NANTUCKET The CHARLESTON ' During W.W. II the Academy moved to shore side facilities in Hyannis, and shared the Training Ship American Pilot with New York and Maine Maritime Academies. 1948 brought the former Navy gunboat Charleston to the Academy, and as Hyan- nis had no harbor facilities for a ship as large as her, the school was moved to its present location at Taylors Point, Buzzards Bay. 2

In 1957 the Academy pur- chased the A.P.A. Doyan , which rechristened the Bay State , has and continues to serve as the Academy Training Ship. 1965 brought about a great change in the organiza- tion of the Academy as it was in- corporated into the Division of State Colleges. A new building program was initiated, and in 1969 the Science and Ad- ministration Building, t he first of the new campus, was completed. As we watched, construction was started on the Gymnasium, Library, Dormitory and Power Plant, and . . . The BAY STATE
