ADMINISTRATION Lee Harrington President You. the members of the one hundred thirtieth graduating class of the Mass. Maritime Academy, lived through perhaps the most difficult period in this school ' s history. As the last class quartered on the Bay State, and the first to occupy the new dormitory, you felt the privations of the old. and were exposed to the great expec- tations of the new — undoubtedly a most frustrating experience. But may I suggest that you assess your years at the Academy in the light of their real meaning. These years brought to each of you not only an involvement in the long and proud traditions of both our school and the service for which it prepared you but also a discipline of self and the means of following a career within an environment, the seafaring life, which means so much to all of you. As any great tradition implies not only an honored past but also a going forward, an advancement, so also should your relationship with the Maritime Academy be measured. Each of you helped to sustain our tradition, adapted to the difficulties of change, and. in surviving, helped to insure the Academy ' s continuation and growth. And as the Academy grows, you will be part of it and will share in its growth, even as you and your careers grow. I regret that my acquaintance with you was so brief, but since our careers are mutually dedicated to things maritime, we shall fre- quently cross courses in the years ahead. And as we all work to go forward, let us develop and strengthen that bond which joins us. the rich tradition of our Academy. sincerely yours, President Lee Harrington
