THE CLASS OF 1972 Presents THE MUSTER a Senior Publication of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy CONTENTS Dedication Administration and Faculty Underclassmen History Memoriam Seniors Activities Advertisers Gaston W. Norgeot, Editor In 1891 the Legislature of the Common- wealth of Massachusetts approved the or- ganization and charter of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Under the sails of the Enterprise , and later the Nantucket , the Academy grew, producing men of the highest caliber in the arts of Seamanship, Naviga- tion, and Marine Engineering. The E NTERPRISE The NANTUCKET The CHARLESTON ' During W.W. II the Academy moved to shore side facilities in Hyannis, and shared the Training Ship American Pilot with New York and Maine Maritime Academies. 1948 brought the former Navy gunboat Charleston to the Academy, and as Hyan- nis had no harbor facilities for a ship as large as her, the school was moved to its present location at Taylors Point, Buzzards Bay. 2 In 1957 the Academy pur- chased the A.P.A. Doyan , which rechristened the Bay State , has and continues to serve as the Academy Training Ship. 1965 brought about a great change in the organiza- tion of the Academy as it was in- corporated into the Division of State Colleges. A new building program was initiated, and in 1969 the Science and Ad- ministration Building, t he first of the new campus, was completed. As we watched, construction was started on the Gymnasium, Library, Dormitory and Power Plant, and . . . The BAY STATE SCIENCE ADIVUnHSTRAT10N After many years, and many battles by many men, a long awaited hope has become a reality. With these new facilities, the Academy has an unprecedented potential. However, the times are changing, and so the people that teach, as well as those that learn. Whatever the future holds in store for our alma mater, our hope is that the Massachusetts Mari- time Academy may continue to offer to young men the opportunity: To earn the Degree oj Baehelor of Science in Nautical Science or in Marine and Electrical Engineering To obtain a commission as Ensign in the U,S, Naval Reserve We The Class of 1972 Wish To Express Our Sincere Gratitude To CAPTAIN PAUL A. JOHANSEN By Dedicating Our Yearbook To His Honor We are Thankful; Not because he was honest, but because he dealt with us honestly. Not because he was wise, but because he shared his wisdom with us. Not because he smiled, but because he made us smile also. We hope that we may do the same. 8 ADMINISTRATION Lee Harrington President You. the members of the one hundred thirtieth graduating class of the Mass. Maritime Academy, lived through perhaps the most difficult period in this school ' s history. As the last class quartered on the Bay State, and the first to occupy the new dormitory, you felt the privations of the old. and were exposed to the great expec- tations of the new — undoubtedly a most frustrating experience. But may I suggest that you assess your years at the Academy in the light of their real meaning. These years brought to each of you not only an involvement in the long and proud traditions of both our school and the service for which it prepared you but also a discipline of self and the means of following a career within an environment, the seafaring life, which means so much to all of you. As any great tradition implies not only an honored past but also a going forward, an advancement, so also should your relationship with the Maritime Academy be measured. Each of you helped to sustain our tradition, adapted to the difficulties of change, and. in surviving, helped to insure the Academy ' s continuation and growth. And as the Academy grows, you will be part of it and will share in its growth, even as you and your careers grow. I regret that my acquaintance with you was so brief, but since our careers are mutually dedicated to things maritime, we shall fre- quently cross courses in the years ahead. And as we all work to go forward, let us develop and strengthen that bond which joins us. the rich tradition of our Academy. sincerely yours, President Lee Harrington 13 MARINE ENGINEERING 22 25 35 tering of the Class of 1972. into the Mass- achusetts Maritime Academy. The 1971-72 Soccer season began after the second class cruise with the hope that with more practice, a winning season would result. The result was not quite that which was hoped for, but it was the best season in several years. Last years forward line of John Fitzpatrick, Pat Jenkins, Ace Cahill and George Arsenault were bol- stered by some new freshmen, and a definite scor- ing threat was imposed against all teams on the schedule. The halfbacks Frank Peterson, Steve Cheromcha and Ray Doherty did a superb job on offensive and defensive. The fullbacks, John Hop- kins and Ken Rogers proved to be tough, as they with the help of goalies Paul Pr eziose and Kevin O ' Brien, held Barrington, the leagues finest, to their lowest score all season. The team ' s most satisifying victory was a tri-meet held along the Charles River, after a typical night on Kenmore Square. The only poor showing for the season was on the mountainous course at Worchester. This year the team did manage to bring home the Aca- demy ' s first trophy in cross-country — a second place in the Pop Crowell Invitational Meet held in Barrington, R.I. The team topped off the season by revenging the one point loss to the host ' s of the Barrington Invitational with a surprising one point upset on our home course. Now that the pace has been set the grads are confident that the future cross-country teams will continue to display a win- ning record. 92 L. to R. S. T Flanagan, P. F, Coleman. H. J. Kunkel. T. The 1971-72 Massachusetts Maritime Hockey team was probably one of the best examples of determination ever seen at the Academy. Under the capa ble leadership of Mike McCarthy and the team Superstar Jeff Wilkinson, the club showed our inter-collegiate competitors the results of many hours of hard work and practice. After clashing with Curry, Suffock, Bridgewater. Framingham, Emer- son. 4C ' s. and the Falmouth Flyers, the team managed to emerge with a .500 record. Thanks to Lt. Sacht, the cadet battalion was allowed to attend the games at Falmouth. The players could always pick their job- suited rooters out of the crowd, but of course, job suit or not. Maritime cadets stand out in a crowd. Coach Jack Morrill took over the team in nearly mid-season, and helped the team finish with a respectable average. He certainly de- serves a sincere well done and thanks from each and every member of the team. Next year the team will be without the service of veterans Paul Gavin, John Glennon. The Dance was preceded by a candlelight dinner with the strolling minstrels of Sherman Marcus Orchestra. The evening was highlighted by the Ring Ceremony, symbolizing the marriage of the mariner to the sea, and a precision drill exercise pre- sented by the Honor Guard. The jurors take a vote almost immediately upon entering the jury room. The vote is 11 guilty to 1 not guilty. Person- alities emerge strongly throughout the entire play as the jurors argue the evidence. The emotion packed acting rises to a climax as one by one each juror is convinced that there is a reasonable doubt as to the guilt of the defendant. THE DIRECTOR. Henry Ceely All of the action takes place within the confines of the jury room. It is here that the audience learns the facts of the case through the arguments of the jurors. The actors must perform perfectly their roles as there are no opportunities to leave the stage to consult their lines. Mr. Henry Ceely, the director, has produced a wonderful suspense packed play. This is the first time that this play has been performe d live in this area. Plainly and simply it is the finest instrument of its kind in the world. The clock ' s superbly designed eight-day, eleven jewel movement strikes the traditional Ship ' s Bells and can be depended upon for precise accuracy through years of use. The case is solid brass. Dial sizes range from 3% to 8V2 . A barometer that matches the Ship ' s Bell in both design and accuracy is also available. Both instruments may be purchased at finer jewelry, department stores and marine sup- ply houses.
