forever young the bul finch, nucleus of the hospital, first of its many buildings, still the most beautiful, outdated physically according to more recent stan- dards of use, it remains a symbol of the timeless wish to help others through knowledge, judgement, and skill representative of the con- f temporary best for almost seventeen decades. devoted men and women have so long sought here to learn and to add to human knowledge in service of many kinds, within a class or generation and across several lifetimes all these people share a com- mon bond: pride in a tradition of excellence (whatever its definition), humility in awareness of limitatpns, joy in sharing gifts which make present and future effort possible. the class of 1980 is among fhem. amidst tangible evidence of change they have found growth, developement, renewal, challenge, wonder, and reward, this book records some of the things shared for three years. but the great book is still unwritten, the book of things to come after the class has scattered, that book will never be written, yet on its invisible pages all members of the class will record uniquely the sum of the services for which all that the bulfinch symbolizes has prepared them. helen sherwin massachusetts general hospital, boston, massachusetts 02114
