CAPPING 1 i “vulnerable, fallible human mixtures of good and bad — like myself . . . people . . . . has the qualities of equanimity, courage and compassion ... to be able to say — i’m wrong i don’t know i understand.” A tall cap — made of icing on a cake. We all stand around it — laughing, crying, rejoicing. Our families are proud and almost as amazed as we, that two whole years have already passed. A tall cap — which one on that incredibly beautiful snowy mountain belongs to me? Already my row is standing. One by one my classmates are capped. Each reacts differently as the cap represents a unique personal victory to every one of us. A tall cap — Miss Petzold has my cap in her hands now. Miss Brady gives me a warm smile. I stand with my new cap on — it feels so good. It belongs there, for I have earned the right to wear it. Thank-you, Dr. Durant. Miss Sleeper, what are you thinking? 112 tall caps — each on e of us now has her own. The whole room stands in applause, but we are not yet through. A ripple passes through the class of 71, and with a shout of joy, our well-served, and yes, well-loved flat caps sail skyward . . . now we are seniors. 70 Nursing, to me, in one word is commitment; commitment to a value system predicted upon the belief in the “worthiness” of people and those things which are important to them. To be a nurse is an honor, not a burden, a gaining, not a giving, a profession, not a trade. We are privileged to deal with the real, not necessarily the ideal. By real we mean the small aches, the perennial agonies, hurts, hates, sorrows, anguish and separations that are the inevitable inheritance of all men. Loneliness, however, can be, and often is, the item on which the bud of commitment blossoms. We need each other’s strength; we need each other’s love. Isolation is tolerable and necessary; under- standing makes it productive, PATRICIA POWERS R,N, B,U, YEARBOOK, 1965, YVONNE FRANCES ARIKIAN a little knowledge that acts is worth infinitely more than much knowledge that is idle.
