Having lost seven starters due to graduation from the previous year's team, this was a rebuilding year. The team finished the regular season by defeating Union College 2-1 at Union's field, a feat that was well deserved. At the time Union was ranked sixth in the Nation in Division Ill soccer. The only other loss Union had suffered to that point was to the Nations top ranked team Brandeis University. We narrowly missed being invited to post season play as the ECAC selection committee did not use the Union game as a basis for its decision. tThe selection was made the moming of the contesti. Once again, the Mohawks finished in the ISAA top ten ranking for Division lll soccer in New England, finishing in the 9th position. Individual honors were awarded to: All MASCAC to Tom Berg, Ray Wholley, Mike Demorris, and Brain Harlow. Honorable mention went to senior Goal Keeper Ray Sullivan. The NIESC All Star Game and All New England Selection was awarded to Ray Wholley, Coach Ron Schewcraft said, Next year's team appears to be strong. Five seniors will graduate, but the nucleus we have retuming is solid. 1986 Captains for next year are John Dougherty, Brain Harlow and Gil Dustin. Best of luck to the graduating seniors. 46 Hz' ritz... n.:--mm Wgmen '5 Soccer l'l.A.S.C.'s first soccer season proved to be both exciting and successful. Under the leader- ship of Head Coach Sue Getchell and Assistant Coaches Tony Manderson and Nancy Getchell. the team closed out it's year with a 4-6 record. Although we played a limited schedule this past season, it was easy to see that there ls great potential for suc- cess in the years to come. Our team was given tremendous amount of support by the Col- lege Community. This was ap- preciated by the entire team and certainly enhanced our season. A hearty Thanks to all who braved the elements to cheer us as we altemately sloshed near or ran towards our opponents goal. Our Indoor club participated in three toumaments this winter. We had the honor of bringing home a first place trophy from the Castleton Indoor Touma- ment. Ellingwood in late August of 1985, the Mohawk hockey team was faced with the difficult task of main- taining the successful program he had constructed. Taking eleven years of hard work and commitment Coach James Ellingwood would be very diffi- cult to replace. In October the team was joined by Coach William Turner who shared with us his knowledge and skill of the game. Attaining another successful season, the 1985-1986 Mohawk hock- ey team ended on a positive note. A record of 16 and 10, the Mohawks advanced to the ECAC toumament against Bowdoin College. During the season, Barry Hayes broke the Colleges all time scoring record. Senior Don Studley contributed to the season with another solid year on defense. Other strong defensive per- formances were seen by juniors Jon Goldstein and Scott Caron as well as freshman Joe Shaughnessy. The strength of our offense came from Barry Hayes, Don McDonough and freshman Sean McCronagle who pro- vided the majority of the scoring for the team. Stu Dovsmer, Chns Hillich, Tom Fahey and Bob Ventura also turned in fine seasons. Under the helm of new coach Jim Bo- rowski, the Lady Mohawks gave their competition tough-fighting battles. Lead- ing the Womens team this season was CaDtain Kathryn McLaughlin. She was named to the ECAC Womens honor role for averaging 21+ points and 12 rebounds in a 2-l week. She also added 12 assists and 16 steals. Teams like the Trojans, Samoans, Dogs, the Hostesses, Toasted Buns, and Who Knew. The overall quality point winners of the 1986 season were the Trojans and the Hostesses. Who could forget the indoor soccer tournament with the Hostesses cap- turing the title with 6 rounds of overtime and 2 rounds of penalty shots against the Toasted Buns. The 1986 James T. Amsler I-M Service Awards are given annually to two seniors who have worked throughout their college career for the betterment ofthe Intramural Program.
