Her quiet dreams of life this hour may cease. Her peaceful being slowly passes by To some more perfect peace. Alfred Lord Tennyson Class History of 1962 It was September of 1958, and The Class of T962 first convened at Orientation Weekend under the sur- veillance of watchful upperclassmen. We donned the traditional beanies-the first class in the history of the School to wear them. Remember Peggy Nealon CST. Pierrel as Queen of Freshman Reception? Classes started and we began to adiust ourselves to hour lectures, speech class, art and music lessons, hour exams, and for the first terrifying time, final exams! With blood, sweat, Tears, and burning the midnight oil, we toiled through courses. Times weren'T all bad though. Mr. Patashnick delighted in mortifying Miss 36-24-36, and field trips to Natural Bridge, The Bird Sanctuary, and Mt. Hope Farm proved to be interesting diversions. There was only one school building in those days, and we spent many long hours in the old Koffee Korner, which served just as adequately as bookstore and card room. Lots of The girls spent their free time in the locker room sitting on pillows around The couch listening to Kathy Jamros, or finding 'Sandy Martinelli badly bitten by the Tsetse Fly fred spots from Jean Kent's art box.J Our Dorm girls reluctantly started living their first year on the second floor of Taconic Hall. Raven's Riders organized under the leadership of Spirited Buddy Pellerin. We had a mind of our own and displayed our un- concern by sitting on the floor in the corridors. Our first project on our own was the Halloween Dance. Under the able direction of Class Officers Bernie Ander- son, Bill Miller, Mary Lou Rapoza, and Sharon Fressola, we put on a respectable show-spaghetti hangers especially Talented. At the end of this year we looked ahead to three more years of hard study and wondered when it would ever end. 46 Back to classes a few weeks late and minus some friends of Freshman year, we heard the Welcoming Speech by Dr. Freel on the front lawn of the Adminis- tration Building, since our new auditorium was not com- pleted. The SM section came into being, and science classes were held in Hoosac Hall. We braved the lad- ders and workmen while going to class. Watch out for those cement blocks and be careful of falling buckets! Construction has its good points though: we had no gym classes and no library Ksoblj Physical science classes, the bane of Sophomore year, often meant moving supplies to the new building. CHow do you write a lab. report on that?J The SM chemistry class did not study nuclear chemistry because it wasn't too important anyway. They did manage to tour the labs of the Breck Hair Co. in Springfield though! With no library, the required U.S. History wasn't too bad. And who can forget English Lit. with Beowulf? To top the year off, we were first introduced to psychology. Class officers Gene O'Brien, Doug Chamberlain, Jo- annie Goodwin, and Ruth Smith spearheaded the Soph- omore Prom held at the Dalton American Legion Home. Little Lulu was our pride and ioy in the snow sculptur- ing contest for Winter Carnival Weekend. That was a beautiful Christmas tree that our Class' dorm girls put up in Taconic Hall foyer. Where did Nancy Curtis ever find such a tree? This year was another landmark, also, when Harlequin and Glee Club combined efforts to put on Brigadoon, the first musical ever produced at the College. The hard work which went into this presentation was very evident to Those who SGW The final product. The end of the year saw the completion of Hoosac Hall with a beautiful auditorium, sharp gym, and handy card room, the new cafeteria was like heaven. When finals were over, we realized that we were half done. Summers are always too short, and we returned to find our schedules crammed with methods courses. While the secondary juniors toiled witf lesson plans and curriculum classes, the elementary majors actually taught a few lessons at Mark Hopkins. The SM section has lived through 4 hours of physics only to find themselves faced with advanced courses with 3 hour lab periods, in which they learned to plug in zee values. Advanced chemistry proceeded well, with breaks evenly spaced between periods of intense labor. Elementary majors astounded us with their creative ability in arts and crafts. Meanwhile, English and social study majors tackled Modern Europe, Shakespeare, In- ternational Relations, American Lit., and Classics. And who said junior year was easy! This is the year we were finally allowed to get THE status symbol, our class rings, the first to read NORTH ADAMS STATE COLLEGE. ln addition to all our study- ing, the junior class, we discovered, is responsible for several social functions. Under the leadership of Eric Jorgensen, Kevin Giroux, Judy Leahey, Mary Ann Walsh, and Dorothy Kirkpatrick, we sponsored Winter Carnival Weekend. Despite the inclement weather, the programs were a success, and Queen Carolyn Doran reigned supreme. Our congratulations to the commit- tees! One of the greatest efforts of our class, especially, went into the College's second musical production, South Pacific. With our own Nancy Ross as female lead and Doug Hunniken as male lead, how could we miss getting such terrific reviews? The all-important Junior-Senior Prom, held at the Dalton American Legion Home, was met with an enthusiastic response. With this heavy schedule, how did we ever find time to enjoy the sun at Fish Pond? The first annual SM picnic, an all day affair at Mausert's, was the envy of the rest of us. Sherwood Inn was the scene of many joyous parties following basketball games-and what a team we had that year! When we were instructed by Dr. Freel to invest the Seniors with their caps and gowns, we realized that our last year was almost upon us. Where, oh where, are the Stately Seniors? Hey! They mean us! lt's impossible to believe, but true, and the first training group goes down to Mark Hopkins. Squeals of I taught my first lesson greet us in the cafeteria. While sneakered, non-training seniors, who are seemingly majoring in cafeteria, decry the academic work load, the practically course-free training seniors complain of uncomfortable heels and ties. And so it goes both semesters. On the whole, we can relax from putting on social events and enjoy the functions as guests of under- classmen. We will never forget the efforts of the fresh- men with their Halloween Dance, the sophomores and their impressive Sleepy Lagoon, the juniors and their well-managed Winter Carnival, and most of all their Junior-Senior Prom. And what do we do in our spare time? Look for jobs, of course. Some, however, are pinning their hopes on graduate study and delve into university catalogues. We can be found nosing around room ll checking envelopes, or writing letters of application and having interviews. With solemnity, we receive our caps and gowns from the juniors. This marks the beginning of the end for us. With finals over, we enjoy the Junior-Senior Prom and the Senior Banquet, though somewhat reluc- tant to realize that we will soon be leaving our friends of four years. The climax of our college days comes on June 10th, the long awaited day when we receive our diplomas. Nervous, excited, exultant, and sad- dened, we participate in the Graduation Day cere- monies. We leave North Adams State College nostalgic with memories that will remain with us for the years to come. 47 Ye Old Lessone Planne C1962 Stylej Name of Lesson: Students say the darndest things! WINDHAM ALBANY .... 66 ' ' 'HH TT J Soccer again provided excitement and pleasure to fans and players alike at North Adams in the fall of 1961. Workouts were under the able guidance of Coach George Jarck. A few returning veterans and a goodly number of fresh- men began the daily workouts. North Adams opened the season with a squad of nineteen of which eleven had to be on the field at all times. The size and the inexperience of the team were a handicap during the entire season. North Adams lost their first game to Castleton and six of their next eight, but a very definite improve- ment was noticed as the season progressed. They won two of their last three games. It was a fighting club. None of the opponents ever had more than two goals at the half, but force of numbers brought on fa- tigue and second half collapse. Everyone on the club gave his best but a few deserve mention. Ben Morandi, who led the scoring with five goals, Bill Mc- Neil, who set up many scores, also Roger Goodell, and Harold Williams who prevented many an opponent from scoring double figures. Coach Jarck deserves special mention for leading the club and for drawing out each pIayer's best. He assigned each player to his most effective position and was constantly urging them on. Only Captain Fran Bissaillon will be lost through graduation. If others return, and with a few freshmen, the team should show much improvement. CO-CAPTAINS: Jim Archey, Joe Spinazola Jim Archey Joe Spaiazola Dave Aucoin 1962 Basketball The T962 basketball team was led by co-captains Jim Archey and Joe Spinazola. The Mohawks were a well balanced club. They were a running ball club and they hustled from start to finish. The A-Z Trio composed of Archey, Carroll and Zoltek never let up on defense or offense. Perachi and Spinazola provided broad strength and were close in scoring punch. Coach Jarck worked long and hard with the individuals and molded them into a team. Always encouraging, always demanding the fighting spirit, Coach Jarck contributed immeasurably to the team's success. Nearly every game was a cliff hanger but the team showed its ability and courage by finishing with a 15-7 record. The team made the playoffs and beat Castleton in the seminfinals but lost to a big, hot shooting Gorham, Maine team in the finals for the Northern Division crown. Only Dave Aucoin will be lost through graduation so the outlook is bright for next year. Win or lose, they should be iust as exciting games. T962 RECORD Wins Against: Waterbury, Lovell, Fitchburg, Castleton, Albany, Keene, Salem, Willimantic, Westfield, Danbury, Berkshire Christian. Losses Against: Westfield, Windham, Willimantic, Danbury and Waterbury. SMU!! Dy? wx Am, 1962 Baseball Team COACHES: Don Ziter, Gene O'Brien FACULTY ADVISOR: Mr. T. Duffy 1 962 Baseball N. A. S. C.'s varsity baseball team under the able leadership of coaches Don Ziter and Gene O'Brien entered its fifth year of collegiate competition. Prospects for a winning season looked bright at the beginning of the year, especially in the pitching department with the return of veteran Tom Condron and the debut of hard throwing John Mozden. N. A. S. C. iumped off to a quick start with identical IO-8 wins over Danbury and Keene. The third game saw a strong Westfield team come in and clip the Profs 4-l. This defeat was then followed by losses to an undefeated Castleton and a very strong Worcester Team. North Adams got back on the winning trail with wins over Fitchburg and Dan- bury again. The Profs would've ended up playing .SOO ball had it not been for the season's final with Westfield. The team ended up with a 4-5 season. John Mozden was again the bright star for the Profs at the plate as were Bill Ostrander, Rog Goodell and Joe Santacroce. A word must be said for Jack Gallivan, our able scorer, who was present at all the games with his usual hustle and efficient bookkeeping. Seniors who wound up their collegiate career were Don Ziter, Gene O'Brien, Tom Condron, and Charie LeClair. Cheerleaders C. Coburn J. Brignolo C. Barroe C. Taylor P. Girgenti P. Warchol M.L.
