Contents Dedication President ' s Message Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Activities Sports Candids Advertisements Dedication Four years ago a new freshman class entered the State College along with a new pro- fessor, John McNulty. The new professor and this class were destined to share a close and friendly relationship for the next four years. They were to come together as advisor and class. It is with a deep feeling of appreciation that we, the members of that class, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. McNulty. We could not recall our college days without thinking of the guidance, encouragement and wisdom you have so generously given us. STATE COLLEGE AT NORTH ADAMS EUGENE L. FREEL President To the Class of 1961 : This year saw the College well started on its new future. A record enroll- ment plus the change in name to State College augurs well for the coming decade. You are the first class to be graduated under our new name, and when you return in five. ten. and more years as alumni you will witness much greater developments. For each of you the way ahead should be a great adventure and a great challenge. The nation needs good teachers in every grade, and this need will increase every year. Salaries will also increase, but so will public criticism of the quality of the teaching. You are well prepared for this chal- lenge, and you should go far in the profession. I ask God to help you achieve your goal. Sincerely, Eugene L. RECORD 2-8-0 NORTH ADAMS WINDHAM CASTLETON WINDHAM ALBANY LYNDON KEENE FITCHBURG CASTLETON JOHNSON ALBANY 56 In its second year of intercollegiate soccer the North Adams team showed a marked overall improvement. Under the able leadership of Coach George Jarck. the team finished with a 2-8-0 record. The two wins were cherished ones. Arch rival Castleton was defeated in two overtime periods 2 to 1 and long time foe Keene was defeated 4 to 2. Ed Hardy, center forward, with six goals was the team ' s leading scorer. Scott and Condron scored two goals each with Lowe. Dunn. Mularczyk. Mirandi and Bissaillon scoring one apiece. Jack Gallivan. an outstanding goalie, played a prominent role in the team ' s defense along with George and Dick St. Pierre. Tony Botto. Fran Bissaillon and George Harriman. Although the team will suffer because of graduation, the team still possesses the potential to improve upon this year ' s record. ■ Basketball Team L to R: Mgr. Bernie Dunn, Bob Mularczyk, Jim Archey, Tom Scott, Joe Zavatarro, Fred Lefave, Joe Spinazola, George St. Pierre, Dick St. Pierre, Dick Jennings, Joe Smart, Hugh Moriarity, Bill McKeever, Danny Foster, Ass ' t. Mgr. Charley Rowley, CENTER: Coach Jarck. CAPTAIN George St. Pierre 58 JOE ZAVATARRO DANNY FOSTER DICK ST. PIERRE JOE SMART FRED LEFAVE 1960-61 Champions New England State College Conference Champs, an impressive title befitting our very impressive basketball team. North Adams this year compiled an awesome record of 21 wins and 3 losses. There were many factors which individually and collectively contributed to the most successful season in the school ' s history. The coaching of Mr. Jarck was of professional caliber. Coach Jarck instilled in his players a desire to win and a determination to put forth their best at all times. His record as a coach at North Adams is the best indicator of his coaching abilities. Captain George S. Pierre had the best year of his college career. While setting a new four year scoring record at the college George also set in individual record high total of 43 points against Westf ield. Fred LeFave was a consistent high scorer all season. The possessor of a pretty left- handed set shot, Fred ' s hot hand provided the fans with many thrills. Joe Spinazola ' s rebounding played a key role in the team ' s success. Joe was also capable of some good scoring. Billy McKeever and Jim Archey were a terrific backcourt combination. Billy led the club in scoring and was a good rebounder and ballhandler. Jim was a pesky ballplayer. A defensive hawk, he was often credited with unexpected steals. Together these two formed the best all around duo in the conference. North Adams had more depth than ever before. Joe Smart was a bulwark off the boards and a steady defensive performer. Danny Foster was the team ' s troubleshooter. A nifty ballhandler. Danny was often called upon when a few quick baskets were needed. Dick St. Pierre was inserted into the lineup when some rugged rebounding was called for. Hugh Moriarty, a freshman, came through with many timely points. Bob Mularczyk, Dick Jennings. Brent Marlow and Tom Scott could also be relied upon for good play when given the nod by Coach Jarck. Joe Zavattaro. who graduated in January, was the team ' s defensive ace. A steady player, Joe was the floor general directing the team with finesse. After finishing first in the Northern Division North Adams defeated Plymouth, New Hampshire handily for the Northern Division title and the right to meet the Southern Division titlists. Worcester. The title game, held at the North Adams gym, was the best team effort of the year. Worcester was a strong well coached team and the game was one of the best ever witnessed in North Adams. The entire team played an excellent brand of ball which resulted in an 88-70 North Adams victory, the crowning point of the best season in the school ' s history. Serving as manager this year was Bernie Dunn who did a commendable job in per- forming a very demanding job. His assistant Charlie Bowley was also a very diligent and conscientious worker for the team. 60 Cheerleaders From L. to R.: Mary Lou Rapo za, Joan Brignolo, Kathy Coburn, Cindy Barrow, Mary Ellen Coty, Claudia Taylor, Helena Gralinski, Judy Patashnick. The cheerleaders, under the leadership of Mimi Coty, added immensely to the color and spirit of the team. Their lively and original cheers were appreciated not only by the players but also by the loyal fans of the team. Congratulations for a job well done. Baseball The prospects for a winning season this year in baseball are very good. Re- turning lettennen from the strong team which finished second in the New England Conference last year include inflielders Bill Ostrander, Tom Condron and Bud Pellerin along with outfielders Joe Smart. Jack Carroll, Jack Gallivan, Joe Santacroce and Charlie LeClair. The bulk of the pitching is expected to be shouldered by veterans Fred LeFave, Tom Condron and Gene O ' Brien. The graduation of last year ' s catcher-coach Joe Zavattaro was a tremendous loss to the club. The newly appointed coach, Bud Pellerin, has had considerable experience in the game and will undoubtedly carry on in the fine tradition begun by Joe. Mr. Thomas Duffy is the faculty advisor. His keen interest and vitality lend themselves perfectly to a job which is well executed and greatly appreciated by the players. 62 c A D I S 64 %sXSk3t aZ Vi I - :! wutt - ft Ik «k 68 Class Beilke, Juanita 25 Windom Terrace, North Adams Bergeron, Paul W. __ 6 Lapierre Street, Southbridge Bissaillon, Francis 155 North Hoosac Road, Williamstown Bombardier, Neal 49 Davenport Street, North Adams Bourdon, William L. _ 11 Columbia Terrace, Adams Bressette, Martha 143 Notch Road, North Adams Bucala, Louise West Street, North Hatfield Buckley, Margaret 20 Taylor Street, Pittsfield Caird, Virginia Summer Street, Lanesboro Carroll, John 40 Hawthorne Avenue, Pittsfield Chalfonte, Frederick 148 Bracewell Avenue, North Adams Clark, Donald 943 Massachusetts Avenue, North Adams Condron, Thomas Route 8, Cheshire Curtis, Nancy Chesterfield Cwalinski, Judith 11 West Street, Adams Davine, Patricia 11 Wesleyan Street, North Adams deGategno, Veronica Spruce Hill Farm, North Adams DeMarco, Lawrence 17 Montana Street, North Adams Doran, Carolyn 149 Bradley Street, North Adams Duckworth, Lois 2331 Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford Fleischman, David 405 Allen Street, Springfield Forward, Diana Lo gview Avenue, Hinsdale Freitas, Ann Horseneck Road, Dartmouth Gallivan, John 20 Summer Street, Adams Gamba, Dorene 272 Benedict Road, Pittsfield Giroux, P.
