“Four years in art school, the premise... learn art. Can teachers really do that; teach art? Well there were slides, thousands and thousands of slides, and we nodded off. Somebody somewhere must have presumed that all those slides would teach art. There were critiques: it certainly seemed like there were thousands and thousands of critiques. In them we were informed that we had failed to make successful art. We smiled and thought ‘good point. I’ll certainly make that a concern in my next piece’. We smiled and clenched our teeth and thought, ‘It’s absurd how these morons can stare at my work for thirty seconds, open their mouths, and proceed to reveal that they have no idea what the hell they’re talking about’. In the event we find out we have made successful art we just smile... our minds going blank with elation, our teachers, without question, are the best. Somebody somewhere must have presumed that all those critiques would teach art. There were books, thousands and thousands of books. We read, we were tested, we forgot.. .well we forgot most of it anyway. Somebody somewhere must have presumed that all those books would teach art. O.K., maybe all the slides, critiques, and books can’t teach art.. .then how did it happen? As you flip through these pages you’ll see how. All those faces, all those students, all that community, all that energy, all that free food at the openings. We had alot more than s lides, critiques and books, like the song says, ‘We got each other’. And so seniors, you will be dearly missed, and I would venture to say that you will miss all that you are leaving behind. But hey, don’t be sad after all you’ve got this great book, and you can come back and score some cheap Chablis and Brie at an opening anytime. In fact we’ll look forward to it. Make Us Proud, Liam Maher President, SG A
