The Tradition Continues Once again in 1987-88 the MCHS Lady Patriot basketball team maintained its dominant position as the Number One team in Southern Illinois. A powerhouse during the 1980’s, the Lady Patriots have compiled a record of 164 wins against only 31 losses since the 1981- 82 season. During 1987-88 the I-ady Pats once again advanced to the State Tournament in Champaign, their fifth trip to the prestigious tour- nament in the last seven years. Riding the strength of the scoring of Becky King and Rachael Schneider (10.5 and 9.7 per game averages respectively) as well as a solid defense well-versed in basketball fundamentals, the Lady Pats literally rolled over much of the Southern Illinois competition in both regular and post-season play. Their 19 wins fell just short of the coveted 20-win season which has become a tradition in girls’ basketball at MCHS, but their compiled record of 78 wins and only 16 losses in three seasons under Coach Prevallet and Assistant Coach Janet Foster will stand against any record in Illinois. The 1987-88 edition of Lady Patriot basketball featured All- Southern Illinois first team pick Becky King, Lions Club All-Star Rachael Schneider (along with King), and a Southern Illinois Player of the Week, Carrie Lahr. A basketball tradition at MCHS? The Lady Patriots — the only team to advance to the state finals in both A and AA on consecutive years — the only team to finish second in both classes — instill pride and patriotism in area fans. Indeed, the tradition continues in Massac County! 5
