In acodemics. the JETS-TEAMS placed second in the District competi- tion ot Shownee College with Senior Lee Sonders placing first in English ond physics. The Academic Teom, under the leadership of Marilyn Moore, finished third ot the State Regional Tournament ot SIU-C. Lee Sonders was named to the Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Teom. The MCHS Chapter of Future Farmers of America wos also busy os they attended the FFA Notional Convention in Kansas City ond com- peted in agriculture mechanics ond livestock judging of the FFA Store Competition in Champaign. In computer science ond business, Senior Tim Williams placed first in computer programming ond second in word processing of the Shownee College Business Skills Competition Doy. In science ond business. Seniors Vonce Allbritten ond Sharon Stewart were presented awards os MCHS Honorary Business Deportment Represen- tatives while Jonet Mathis wos named Outstanding Business Student for 1986-87. The MCHS Moth Teom sent eight students to the State Moth Contest of Illinois State University — Bloomington where several MCHS com- petitors placed in the finol top twenty. In speech ond dromo, Seniors Michelle Smith ond Scott Suttles com- peted in the State Speech Tournoment or Pork Ridge while the musical Grease enjoyed two evenings of sellout performances on April 24-25. The MCHS chapter of Future Homemakers of America donated $265 to the WPSD Telethon of Stars. The chapter also attended the store FHA Conference in Springfield. In athletics, the Lady Patriots' basketball teom finished second in Il- linois in the AA boskerboll finals. The Lody Patriots ore the only ream in Illinois history to finish second in the store in both A ond AA. In frock ond field. Senior Dirk Lipert emerged os the store of Illinois AA Discus champion, defeating outstanding competition from East St. Louis ond Chicago. Finally, the Sentinel wishes to acknowledge two hardworking ond valuable assets to MCHS: the MCHS Student Council for oil the work they do each year in making our school o better place, ond Library Assistant Don Brown, who, of seventy-six yeors young, works tireless- ly to improve the quality of the MCHS library. During 1986-87, MCHS enjoyed on exceptional year, one which will remain always os one of the bright spots in the history of Mossoc County High School. A Missed Friend Forrest Breeden 1934-1986 Chicago Tribune All-Stare Scholastic Team All-State AA Champion Discus Lee Sanders Dirk Liperf The Sentinel yearbook staff wishes to extend o special salute to MCHS Assistant Principal Dr. Bill Thompson for the strength and courage he has displayed throughout the past year and a half. Though Dr. Thompson continues to battle illness, he fulfills his duties as assistant principal, both during regular school hours as well as at many evening school events. Likewise, he has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to maintain a positive outlook on his daily activities and on life in general. He has, in truth, become a symbol of courage and respect for students and faculty alike. Dr. Thomp- son is an individual whose strength and inner resolve_serve as ex- emplary models for life and we at the Sentinel extend to him our special thanks for the job he has done since coming to Massac County High School. .. 7 The 1986-87 Sentinel yearbook staff proudly dedicates the 1987 edition of the Sentinel to MCH5 Science teacher Kenneth Halsrenberg. Mr. Halsrenberg began his reaching career at Metropolis High School in 1957 and during 1987-88 he will enter his thirty-first year of reaching. A remarkable aspect of his career is that in thirty years of teaching he has nor missed a single day of school due to illness. In addition to teaching biology and physical science at MCHS, Mr. Halsrenberg teaches an accelerated program entitled Science Discovery for Shawnee College during the summer term each year os well as accelerated evening courses throughout the school year. Mr. Halsrenberg received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University — Corbondale and his Master of Science degree from prestigious Vanderbilt Peabody in Nashville, Tennessee. He has also completed post-Masters work at Southern Illinois University — Corbondale. Mr. Halstenberg's philosophy of education is to expect o great deal from students in their dossroom performance. He also feels that it is the teacher's responsibility to moke every student feel important. He and his wife, Wanda, hove one son, Mike. Mr. Halsrenberg enjoys woodworking In his leisure time. The Sentinel staff and the MCHS student body extend o heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Halsrenberg for the rime ond effort he hos extended over the post thirty years to the students of Metropolis. His commitment to education is one to which oil educators aspire. The Bond won numerous sectional awards in school competition, such os best auxiliary, best percussion, and best field commander. The highlight of the year was the MCHS Band's success or the King Cool Festival in West Frankfort, where they won the Grand Champion Award. Overall, the Bond brought home o total of seventeen trophies from competition throughout 1986-87. In addition ro competition, the Bond spent countless hours adding excitement ro Patriot athletic events and volunteering rime to provide music for local happenings, such os the dedication of the Superman statue or Superman Square and performing for area veterans' orgonizorions.
