Q . Q HI TORY 1. , Now the history of the Class of Fifty-four. of the Masonic High School of Kentucky. is in this wise: ln the beginning, in the nineteen hundred and fiftieth year of our Lord and on the fourth day of the ninth month, there entered into this Land of Learning. twenty-one seekers of knowledge. Some came up through our own grade school. for Bennie and Audrey Jean had started in Miss Juliet Holton's kindergar- ten back in the year nineteen hundred forty. Betty Jean Blanton. Glenn Earl Blanton. and Phyllis Ann Jarvis came from other institu- tions of instruction. and all were fresh and green. One oi the outstanding events of the year was a Christmas party. Miss Freda Whitfield. our sponsor. helped make it an event which we will never forget. After many months of hard work and much suffering, our eyes were turned to gradu- ation and advancement. but several were lost by the wayside. Glenn Earl was a member of our class only a short time. He returned to live with his grandfather. Cupid came along during the year and touched the heart of Ruby Sowder. Besides the loss of these two. Ver- onica Greene did not return after our summer vacation. So. thus did our class decrease until the number of real stickers was only eighteen. Sad. but true! II. During our sophomore year. the people ot Brownsville invited the boys basketball team to visit them and tour the Mammoth Cave, The boys were thrilled with this trip during the basketball season. Later in the year. the entire group of girls in Cottage l went to the cave. We will always recall this as a pleasant memory of our sophomore days. Miss Louis MeHatton was not only our sponsor. but also our English teacher. She tried to inspire us with the stories of King Arthur and his Knights. In the fall of the year. we lost George Shelton and Franklin Samuels. Burnice Neeley stayed with his mother after Christmas. Georgia Branscum did not return to enter our school the next fall, Thus. as the class did journey through the land. four did drop by the wayside and were lost, leaving the unlucky number of thirteen. III. Having successfully completed two years of work. the Class of Fifty-four did enter upon their third year with a spirit of joy and enthusiasm. The junior class furnished much valuable material for the athletic department. For the first time in the history of our school, the basketball team just missed the State Tournament by one game. All members of our class enjoyed the annual hockey and basketball banquet in April. Our class did their part in supporting the dramatic art programs during the year. Shirley Southard was Martha Washington in the Grand Lodge Program. All of us joined the mixed chorus. too. At Christmas time we joined the seniors for our party. Oh. what a wonderful time we had! Mrs. Lillias Ashbury, our class sponsor, had the party at her home. We ate dinner. played games. watched television. and en joyed the association together. After the Christmas holidays, Rose Sowder did not return. Bobby McGuire completed his first term here, then entered Ashland High School. Now our class number had diminished to the count of eleven. IV. Now the fourth year of the history of this class has been one of much hard labor. with little resting by the waysideg preparing us to take our final departure from the land. One other student fell by the wayside. Noble Hawkins joined the Air Force. And it came to pass that Miss Laura Johnson. who had so diligently pulled and tugged at the rope on which the Class of Fifty-four had securely been swinging for three years. was now our sponsor and was still urging us onward. Because of the guidance of our faculty. the school as a whole during the year of fifty-four has been a decided success. First came Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter programsg then, the Christmas program: and after that. the basketball season. In all these events. the ten remaining members of the Class of Fifty-four did carry their part of the burden and assist in any way that they could. So it has come to pass that of the twenty-one that entered the great search for knowledge. only ten will go out the gate that leadeth to graduation on May 28 and hold as their motto: Our Aim, Success: Our Hope, To Win: So-Push. Pull. or Get out of the Way ,-Jean Stepp. POEM CLASS WILL Superintendent, Principal, Teachers. and Friends-Upon behalf of the senior class of 1954 of Masonic High School of the City of Louisville, I have called you together upon this solemn and serious occasion, to listen to our last will and testament, and to receive from us the few gifts we have to bestow in our last moments as students of Masonic High. To the juniors we leave our wads of chewing gum that once did animate our own enjoying jawsg our old seats with tacks that tore our clothesg our old books with and all the knowledge we failed to learn. To the sophomores we leave our quick wits, rapid out having to make up double for the lost time. To the high school infants lfreshmenl we leave science, math, and all those studies which are beyond To our beloved principal, Aunt Laura , we leave caps, belts, knives, fountain pens, pencils, lipsticks, and past months. most of the leaves loose or gone: all the mistakes we made: education, and best of all, our ability to play hooky with- our utmost sympathy and our ability to absorb English. the comprehension of their undeveloped mental capacities, our undying love and affection. We also leave all the old ragged books that she has so jealously guarded for the To the teachers we would give the seats we've left, that they may gaze upon them with regret. Robert Barker leaves his title of Beak to Bennie Lee King in hopes that he will live up to the good name. Bett Jean Blanton leaves her shorthand book and her ability to write shorthand to any one in next year's Y class who will use it. William Clay leaves his good looks, his brain, and his secret business to his brothers, Hudson and Jordan. saying, Now watch it, you guys, and don't get caught with the goods. Peggy Hall leaves in hopes that her little brothers and sisters will grow up to get along with every one just as she did, and leaves her dreams of Jim to Allene Wade and her ability to think to any one who needs it. Randall Harper leaves . . . Oh, no! He's taking Janice with him-poor kid. Janice Jackson leaves her vitamin pills to Kay Jarvis because they didn't do her any good. Take one a day, Kay. Phyllis Jarvis leaves Edward Campbell to Dottie, as Phyllis did. What is all the shouting about? Bennie Rogers is Jean Barker. her sister. hoping that she will take good care of him finally leaving, but he is still keeping close range on Shirley Southard leaves her ability to sing to Jackie Hall and Goldie Peters and hopes that they will be on TV some day. Jean Stepp leaves Jackie Shelton to Frances Shepherd. After all. that is where she got him. BETTY BLANTON RANDALL HARPER CHRISTMAS PARTY -- DECEMBER 16 Our high school days are over. lt's time to heave a sigh, To raise a cheer, conceal a tear. And bid the gang good-bye. Our high school days behind, Now each of us departs, With memories of you, Dear Schoolmates, in our hearts. Good-bye, dear friends, a fond farewell We bid each one of you, But you will be within our hearts Forever. Now adieu. The time has come when we must part: Our senior year has passed. We bid this fond farewell to you- Our year has gone too fast. We leave our school with sorrow, We wish each one success. And pray to God in heaven above To give you happiness. -Shirley Southard XL PRUPHECY Masonic Home, Ky.. May 28. 1964. Dear William. We were very glad to hear from you and wc are sorry that you couldn't be here for the dedication of our new swimming pool. We feel very proud to have a classmate in Paris studying art. and we are sorry that we cannot be there with you. Betty Blanton, who is the private secretary of Billy R. Fortner tthe successor of J. Edgar Hooverl. came down for the dedication. She is still as pretty as ever and we were all glad to see her. The plans for the new swimming pool were drawn by none other than Robert Barker. who has become the chief architect of the Barker Construction Company. He is very successful and we are proud to claim him as a former classmate. We were glad Shirley Southard could take time out from her television rehearsals and pro- grams long enough to come down for the dedication. As you know, she has become a very success- ful comedienne and we are justly proud of her. We didn't expect Bennie Rogers. the head basketball coach of U. of K.. to come because of his full schedule. But he took time out and came down anyway. Jean Barker. his attractive wife. came with him. We were very glad to see both of them. Phyllis Jarvis is now a home economics teacher in her home town. Olive Hill. Kentucky. She is married now and has two children. We were glad that she and her family could come. Jean Stepp also came. As you know, she is now married to a football player. Her wish has been three-fifths fulfiled. She has three boys and wants two more. Randall Harper is now chief electric en- f' Q gineer at General Electric and his time is limited. I guess you know he is married to I Janice Jackson. They are very happy to- gether. Janice completed nurses' training and was head nurse at Johns Hopkin's Hos- pital in Baltimore, but gave up her job after she married. Now her favorite and only patient is Randall. Peggy Hall is now a photographer for Life Magazine. She was very busy but found time to come to the dedication. She took some very good pictures that day. Oh! By the way, we saw some of your pictures in an Esquire Magazine. Thcy were very good. Your former classmates, PEGGY HALL. JANICE JACKSON. Jarvis was the only little boy left in his cottage after Larry and Gary Hall went home to stay, so he started to school at the beginning of the second semester. He is doing excellent work for a very young five-year-old. Tommy Spann has entered Cottage Two this spring and is a pre-school child. We also have one pre-school girl, Easter Nowak. who is in Cottage Five. In March, Miss Waldeck left us to teach in the public schools of Jefferson County. ART HOME ECONOMICS Home economies is interesting to most girls because of its practical use. No matter what field they choose after graduation. home economics helps them in their appearance and personality. The units we have studied this year are Dating, Marriage, Getting Along with Others. Foods. and Clothing, Their favorite is Clothing because they can have more clothes for less money if they can sew. The girls also gain experi- ence and poise in serving various banquets and teas. It is all enjoyable because we learn by working together. Mrs. Williams. WO OD WOR K Our industrial arts department be- gan the year with new equipment and a new instructor. Mr. Roy Buchaus. Nine boys took advantage ot the opportunity to learn wood- work. As a reward for their work in this department. they have. not only the knowledge they acquired. but the articles they made. They may keep or sell the end tables. wall shelves. gavels, cedar chests. or other articles they completed. The truest torin of art is that of self-expression. In our art study we have inuch fun painting. modeling, carving, and drawing. All of these are mediums by which we throw oft' all our inhibitions and truly express ourselves. All men would be happier if, during their years ot' growing up. they had learned to see beauty in nature, to feel the rhythms ot' their own deep breathing, to hear the song the footsteps sing, to know they are not just men who walk. but they are part ot' a great pattern-a pattern started with the Great Creator. Ill. iFOvertime BASKETBALL AIR. AND MRS. ROY BUCHAUS The Masonic High basketball team started the season off well by defeating Henry Cen- tral. The team was a hot and cold team, play- ing some of the best schools in and around Louisville. Some of our opponents were Male. Manual. Fern Creek. and Oldham County. The team cannot be judged by its record, but by h-ow it fought down to the wire in all the games. That the boys played good team ball on the floor can be told by the score book, as the scoring was always even and well dis- tributed among the players. Here at Masonic we think we have one of the best coaches in the state. He taught the team a lot and stressed team play. We wish him all the luck in the world in years to come. We want to thank the alumni for their sup- port and for the jackets for the team, In our annual game with the alumni. we were the winners by a score of 57-41. Masonic High was runner-up in the Twenty- ninth District and received a beautiful trophy. We lost to Carrollton in the first round of the Eighth Regional Tournament.-Jack Shelton. District Tournament: Bennie King. only a sophomore. played some very fine ball this year. Bennie plans to play football next year at Eastern High and to drop basketball, We are hoping that he will change his mind and play basketball also. King was a good reserve. Emmett Greer started the season on thc bench, but before the season was over, he had worked himself up to the first team. Although Greer scored but thirty-four points, he was a good rebounder. Only a sophomore. Greer was a good team player. Adrian Dickison. who was just a freshman this season. showed every possibility for 'i good player next season at Eastern High. Starting the season as a junior-varsity player. Adrian had worked his way up to the first ten players by tournament time. He didn't see too much action in the tourneys because of lack of experience. Bennie Rogers, who held high point honors for the team this year. with 274. was also a good defensive man. Rogers, the team's cap- tain, was the main factor in the team's reach- ing the regional tournament. We are sure Bennie, who is a senior. will do very well in college next year. Harold Dean Ramage. one of the youngest boys on the varsity team. ended the season with 105 points to his credit. A sophomore and a good player. Ramage was held back this year by lack of experience. but we are sure that he will do very well at Eastern High next year. Robert Barker, a six-foot senior, is the third tallest player on our team. He did not get many points, but we could always depend on Robert for a good defensive game. He had to miss a lot of practice because of high blood pressure. Robert scored twenty-eight points for the season. Only a sophomore. Edward Shackelford scored 160 points and was a constant threat to the opposition. Whitey missed two games because of an ear injury received in practice. He should play lots of ball next year at Eastern. William Clay. a 5'8 senior. made a fine showing for himself this year. Although Bill got but thirteen points. we could depend on him for some very fine ball handling. and he was a good set-up man for our plays. Jack Shelton. the only junior on the squad. played the whole season on the first five and scored 227 points. Shelton was an all-around man, starting the season as forward. later switching to guard. and sometimes playing center. Eastern High will have a good player in Shelton next year. Randall Harper. the tallest boy on the team. ended the season with a total of 229 points. good for second place scoring honors. One of the four seniors on the team. Harper has great ossibilities of becoming a good college player. Jordan Clay Clinton Fugale James Allcock Lloyd Sinipaon Robert Eversole Hudson Clay as 45 1-J UNIUR VA ll Junior Varsity The Junior Varhily basketball teani, Lllldidl' the guidance ol Roy But-haus. has had a vt-ry successful season. The boys showed a will to win and a cletermination to fight until the last whistle blew, We have some good ball playera on our Junior Varsity and wish them all the luck at Eastern next year. Bennie Rogers. TY V 22 55 44 MARVIE JEAN LULA CAROLYN Cheerleaders are very important to any team. Our girls this year spent many hours in practice. They were at every game cheering to the final whistle and never giving up. Three of the girls. Viva Harper. Jean Barker. and Jean Stepp. returned to the squad: and Carolyn Branham and Lula Thomas were chosen by the student body to make the team of five girls. A short time before the season ended, Viva Harper was forced to give up cheerleading because of her health. She was replaced by Marvie Bloodworth. a member of the group last yea1'. It is hard to win a trophy the first time but even harder to win the same award two years straight. All during the season the girls were working toward one goal, being Cheer Champs of the 29th District. We knew they were good. but we didn'i know whether they were good enough to win against the stiff competition they had. They were not only good, they were the best and were selected again this year as the district champions. Nice going. girls. Sue Waldeck, Cheerleader Sponsor.
