TAYET It was with deepest sorrow that the doors of Mason Junior High School were opened on the twenty- seventh day of April by students and members of the faculty, one day after the tragedy which claimed the lives of our beloved principal, Mr. Frithjoffllritzy M. Tayet, his wife Gwendolyn, baby daughter Janna Lynn, and his niece Lois Ann Johnson, a well-loved seventh grade student in our school. The silence which settled over Mason on this day showed the honor and respect held in the hearts ofall for this great man. Students looked to him as a friend always ready with a helping hand and that extra something that could set a boy or girl on the right pathg teachers knew that they could count on him for his thoughtfulness and outstanding ability as an educator. Throughout the state Mr. Tayet was recognized as a leader in the field of education. Yes, Mason has losta friend, a guide, a generous and gracious principal, but for years to corne his memorywill linger in the hearts of all who knew him here at Mason, and in the minds of those who in the future will benefit by his work. ff? 5 6 n , 55? Foreword The 1959 MASONIAN is a symbol of Mason and all that it stands fore In its pages glowing memories are brought to life again as we recall our days at Mason Junior High School. It was here we met many new friends and renewed acquaintances with our old ones. Yet our friendship did not stop with our classmatesg it extended beyond them to our teachers and to those in authority above us. AS the ninth graders look back on the past three years, they see that they have often stumbled, but it is how they finished that counts. No one climbs to the top of the mountain without stumbling on the way, but the view from the top is wonderful, The climb has been really worthwhile. Yes, the 1959 MASONIAN holds memories that you as Masonites will cherish throughout your life. . fES iii' ' I 3 X ' xW ' IP gW5f4'Mr'sJ.,. X, O wNMmQ1J:5Y5, xl xy s X f-fx , 7 J . Y 5. DEDICATION Mason Junior High School is regret- fully losing by retirement this year two outstanding members of its faculty who have helped to make our school for many years one of the top ranking groups in Tacoma. Mrs. Evelyn Fiske joined the fac- ulty at Mason in l9h5 as a teacher of remedial reading. It is in this field that she has continued since to give patient Help and immeasurable confi- dence to those students whose school tasks need lightening through spe- cialized instruction in reading. In addition tc these responsibilities Mrs. Fiske has found time for her church where she is now filling the position of pianist and accompanist. Her talent and deep interest in music have been further developed by playing the violin in the College of Puget Sound-Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. MRS. ELSIE L. OGDEN MRS. EVELYN H. FISKE It was in 1935 that Mrs. Elsie Ogden became a member of our faculty. Before the year had passed, her out- standing qualities of. leadership and scholastic ability 'had lead to her selection as one of two teachers in the city to pioneer the organization and development of the course of study in Northwest History for Tacoma Public Schools. Since then her work in this field, as well as in that of voca- tional study, has become well known throughout the state. Mrs. Ogden's book reviews for the Northwest E15- torical ?Earter1g have Brought honor to our c y. tside school she has served well her church, A.A.U.W., Order of the Eastern Star, D.A.R., Daughters of the Nile and several pro- fessional organizations. and so it is to you, Mrs. Elsie Ogden, and to you, Mrs. Evelyn Fiske, in appreciation for the many years of service and devotion to Mason Junior High and its students that we proudly dedicate the Masonian for 1959. 1 V 6 I ..J., Z a 0 'f Q . i I ef L n ,AF i X115 ,7 ! w y .K if?
