These extra-curricular activities have developed students in mind, spirit and body, and many lasting friendships have resulted through these organizations. ln 1922, the first clubs were organized, the L'Mason Puncher Bandn and the '4Mason Girls' Athletic Association, which in 1945 was shortened to '5Pep Squad. Nineteen hundred forty-five was the year for club expansion-in that year the NFulure Homemakers of America and the 'Spanish Clubi' were formed. ln 194-8, the uFuture Farmers of America was organized. ln 1953 Mason High introduced Dramatics or Speech Class into its curriculum. This class began with 8 students and now has about 50 members, although Speech is an elective course rather than an organization. The youngest organizations in Old Mason High are the ulfuture Teachers 0fAmerica, which was started in 1960, and the 5'National Honor Societyn which was begun, in 1969. Mason High has some long-existing organizations, but there are some that were started and eventually faded away. One of these was the Mason High Choral Club which lasted some 45 years, but, alas, as times and interests changed, the Choral Clubw finally closed its songbooks forever. There were many other organizations that have come and gone through the years, but no matter how small, or how short-lived each and every one of them has caused one or more individuals to do something he or she was interested in. To some, it was playing an instrument, to others singing a song, and even ifit was just yelling like crazy, it helped make lasting friendships and stronger individuals. 1? w 'm.- n..-.. s.h1.1, unm- voooouoooooum Hman n lm rn mm STAS! Over the past nine- teen years, very little has changed in the line of tradition-a testimony to the timelessness of this fine function. The Queen's Coronation was a brain child of the Band Boosters organization, serving for many years as their main fund-raising effort. The program and work committees are coordinated by fathers and mothers in the Band Boosters organization, with band members and many students being called on for assistance and cooperation. After all plans and rehearsals have been carried out, the patronizing public is presented with candi- dates for King and Queen of Mason High School. The nighttime activity revolves around a select theme as the young ladies in evening gowns, with their suited escorts, parade in front ofa fabricated backdrop. The students and audience are both held in suspense when the coveted titles are about to be announced. Through secret ballot, the King and Queen and four Dukes and Duchesses have been chosen pre- viously by the entire student body from a complete list of participants. After the Queen has been crowned by the King, before the assembled court, all participants in the Cor- onation bow to them as they leave. A dance is usually held immediately after the Coronation, where a beautiful evening comes to a close among a swirl of long dresses and sparkling glasses of punch. tt? Except for season records, football statistics were not kept until 1930. Since 1930, Mason High's Football Squad has played about 700 football games and 65 teams, ranging from as far north as White Deer, south to San Antonio, east to Deer Park, and as far west as Crane. The Cowpunchers fmore commonly known as the Punchersl'l has been the team name since 1897. Purple and white have been the school colors for almost 80 years. The high school song has been the same for 54 years-before that there was none. There are several differences between present day teams and the teams of yesteryear. The football player's gear, in earlier years, consisted of a leather helmet, which did not have to be worn, and cleats. The 1930 team set basically 2 team records that have lasted 4-6 years. The first record is that of being the only un- defeated team Mason has ever had-there were 6 wins, no losses and no tics The other record was most points scored in a game with Mason over Burnet, 118-0. This team also beat Eden 85-0, the second bestscore that Mason has put on the board against an opponent. A fellow Mason High football player once said, Through the years, the high school has given many individual awards, but the greatest and most overlooked honor one can have, is to represent the Mason HCowpunchers. 1925 cuccroity cam L-R Back Row--Garner Seaquisl, Clayton Schmidt, Elmer Weideman, Fred Gipson, Carl Bielfeldt, Walter Zesch, Coach Kirkpatrick, 2nd Row-Rudolph Loeffler, Glen Capps, Bert Zesch, Malcomb Jordan, Otto Gunther, Franz Reardon, Leroy Iixngeg 3rd Row- Smith Lewis, Dan Pluenneke, Seth Hofmann, Byron Brown, 1. This bell was to have generated enthusiasm over every point made during a football game. As it turned out, interest in the victory bell remained low until the year 1975. At the start ofthe football season, it was announced that a keeper ofthe bell was to be elected from the student body to see that the bell was in attendance at every game and that it was rung for every point made. A choice of titles was submitted. Ding Dong was chosen over Bell Wrangler and Puncher Posse. Mark Hey was elected as the first Ding Dongf, Today, the victory bell wears a dazzling purple and white attire as it is towed from game to game, and it is hoped that the spirit on which it was founded may never cease to grace an athletic contest. uibing eng, cmark gf y 86 unior ccroity . 3 i EA , 4 I I l Bottom L-R: S. X ln 1885 with forseeing eyes the citizens of the small community of Mason had a vision ofa bigger and better Mason to be. They had long since recognized the inadequacy of the shack which was called a schoolhouse. This one-room building was under the big oak tree east of the Lutheran Church. The strictest of discipline was maintained, and they were not sparing in wielding the rod. August 29, 1885, thirty-seven voters requested from the Commissioners Court that Mason be incorporated for school purposes. Election was held in September and it carried by a vote of 84 to 55. With enthusiasm the citizens then decided upon the plans of their new building. When the cornerstone was laid in 1887 a great celebration and parade were held. Their plans had materialized into what is now called the Old Gram- mar Schoolf, a historical landmark which now serves as county library and office building. In 1923, Mason High School students moved to a new building, now known as the Old High School Buildingf, The paper had this to say about the first graduation from the new school: '4The large and spacious auditorium proved to be plenty large to accommodate the large crowd in attendance, which is indeed very gratifying, as it has been the case in the past to be unable to accommodate those desiring to attend these classes. The Old High School Buildinga' accommodated the high school students until 1976. This year, three weeks before school was out the students moved into their modern, new facility. The graduating class of 1976, like that of 1923, once again walked across a spacious auditorium stage, ringing in a new era of education for Mason students. Mason students, teachers, and townspeople, saw a dream materialize from the ground up as the new school was being built and finished. .Nm .-.R . ,Nga ,vw 2 f' . - , :LQ -sivfaiiqnh Ui V ' VMQLQ P -N S xx- if Construction went quickly . . . ln the beginning . . .' 2-ik School Board member, Dr. Karlton Kothmann, was one ofthe first visitors to the new facility. but seemed to take forever. 125 qfcriting ieonteot 1976 is the second year for the Mason High School Writing contest. As surpluses in- creased, clever, graphic and interesting signs were posted near where the goods were sold Advertising in 1776, just as it does 200 years later, painted a vivid, reasonably accurate picture of what day- to-day life was like.
