S. you have passed through these doors into a wide variety of experiences, both enjoyable and sometimes a. little sad. Did you ever walk along a downtomm street and look at yourself in the various windows and mirrors? Most of us have, for we like to see how we look. We like to see pictures of our faces We like to see how we appear at work and during times of leisure We like to see ourselves with friends in various attitudes of our daily lives and during special occasions And we 11ke to see how we looked in the past It IS with this viewpoint that the staff of the 1956 Brand ing Iron has assembled your annual If in the future you turn through these pages and it causes you to smile as you recall the good times you have had here we the Annual Staff can say indeed our efforts have not been in vain Weffjf mme?-'ml ,I gilt . E1 k.M,. 1 5 . 5973, id... I raw. The influence of this one man, as a band director, upon the boys and girls who have been in his classes for the past years cannot be measured. While the thoroughness of his teaching and his desire to win have been very important, they have not been his greatest contributions. More than one student will point to him as an example of a Christian gentleman. We can easily express our feelings by saying, We know as long as we follow his leadership, we will win, not only in Band competition, but in the game of life , With admiration, the staff dedicates the 1956 Branding Iron to MR. High School is a period of our lives when we begin to assume real responsibilities for ourselves, and fast realize that we,and only we, are responsible for our own acts. I hope that we, the faculty and administration, have been successful in helping you to become a more mature person, and have aided you in developing mental and technical skills. Particularly will I watch, with eager anticipa- tion, my first senior class continue its growth and development. fffifflywvf Ellis P. Wood High School Principal Dear Reader: This volume of the Branding Iron records the history of another year in Mason High School. For stu- dents and faculty we hope that most of the memories of the year will become fonder as the years go by. This could be remembered as the tieing year for athletic teams wearing the purple and white uniforms of our school. The members of the staff of this publication have contributed very generously of their time and talent to make this fine book possible, The biggest reward for a thing well done is to have done it. A teacher of an earlier age, Epictetus, said: Diffi- culties are things that show what men are . For the future we do not wish for you an easy time, but that you will stand up well Linder the stresses and strains of life. We trust that your experiences in Mason High School this year will have helped equip you to live a fuller and more purposeful life than you would have lived without having had them. The best of wishes always. Yours truly, geeaiyw E. R. Sharpe Superintendent K 4 I E 44. nmun Elf' gf JK HD And the band played on ---- What do I do now, Mrs. Hardin? SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Last night a wonderful dream came to me I saw the life of every person in the senior class of 1956 as they will be in 1976 The f1rst scene of my v1s1on found me walking down the streets of Loyal Valley Texas my gaze was turned to a magnlficent building only ZOO stor1es hlg h SHARON TINSLEY sittlng at a little booth marked 1nformat1on told me that the building was the headquarters of the Leopard Sh1rt Company I walked over to a desk and asked where I could obtam the information I walked over to the e le vato 1 and TOMMY ROY MARTIN, the elevator boy took me up ROCKY NICHOLSON a very prominent salesman told me that the person I wanted to see was on the 198th floor I entered the office and ZEOLLA GOFF the sec retary told me that TOMMY JORDAN her boss was busy In a few minutes I was s hown IH and I greeted my old frlend, ART SOMMERFELD who was now the Pres1dent of the White Sh1rt Company After s pend1ng the afternoon talk1ng over old t1mes with my fr1end I took the Intereadon to Art Texas wh1ch was a new k1nd of flylng mach1ne named afte r 1ts engineer TOMMY READON At this place Texas and A 81 M were going to play their annual football game the next day I have neglected to say that A 81 M was then located at Art Texas due to the h1stor1cal d1scoveryby JIMMY SCHOOLEY of a new mlneral called pegophate After arr1v1ng at Art I commenced look1ng for s ome of my former school mates I went to MARGENE GEISTWEIDT and DOROTHY GRAY S boardmg house and went to bed Next mo rn1ng the ma1d P AT T Y ROGERS came and made up my bed and told me that MAYME HOLLOWAY the cook had breakfast ready I Slld down the banister and arrived at the table ju s t in t1me to see RAYMOND TAYLOR the Janltor sweep out the left overs PHILLIP SCHMIDT the eat1ng champlon of the world had eaten my meal As I was still hunting for old classmates I decided to go down to the Police Stat1on and see lf any had dec1ded to sleep free of charge and obta1n free meals As it was I found that THURMAN BLACK the ch1ef and arranged for three of my old budd1es to spend the night there I arranged for them to see the game w1th me BARBARA ROBERDS LINDA LEE FRENZEL and BERTIE DURST were thankful and said they would buy me a beer Well after that we declded we should go to the stadlum and get a good seat KARL STENGEL now a Baptist preacher sat down by us and we really had a wonderful time runnlng down the Texas fans Just as KARLTON KOTH MANN the soloist had sung the Star Spangled Banner the two teams ran out onto the f1eld At first I could not bel1eve that lt was so but finally I realized that MELVIN THOMAS was st1ll play1ng football Well the fzrst half went about as expected although the C oac h of the Texas Longhorns CHARLES HUBBARD d1dn t get mad Well anyway durlng the half we bought a snowcone from EMMA RUTH DURST and proceeded to watch the bands perform LOLLY BOGUSCH got out of the little Model T Ford and started her performance Well after every one was brought under control the game began again The game was so one sided that I dec1ded just to look around w1th my glasses and see if I could f1nd any more of my fr1ends I saw WINNARD KOTHMANN smok1ng a b1g cigar and sitting by some beautiful g1rl that had well lots and lots of b1g dia monds on her fingers in her ears and at her neck No' You won t bel1eve lt but that girl was ANN ZESCI-I Among the others I saw were JEANIE BRANDENBERGER who had been l1v1ng 1n New York for some time and was a well known artist up m the b1g Clty Soon I could no longer look for the pals of old days because the game got real exc1t1ng And can you believe lt that right in the m1ddle of the game some l1ttle dog ran onto the field and BARBARA KOTHMANN ran right after it? The l1ttle dog just wou ldn t move so PHIL HARRIS the sheriff got his car and drove out and the dog Jumped 1n and the game went on After the game we ran out onto the f1eld and tore the goal posts down and we had an unfortunate accident though and we went on our way My friends xnformed me that FREDERICK MEYER was not mayo r of Mason and that Senator HAROLD RAEGEN SCHMIDT was golng to make a speech that night on the candidacy for governor That afte rnoon as I was taklng the tra1n for Cal1forn1a I ran across SHIRLEY JOHNSON and her little French poodle dog Pretty soon CAROL ANN WHITEHEAD the conductor of the tra1n hollered to come on I bought a paper 1n the baggage car and commenced to read the news BETTY JANE ZESCH had just saved a l1ttle 3 year old boy from d1v1ng off the high d1v1ng board and thus had gone before the C of C and recelved a t1n badge from LANETTE WILLIAMS the chairman of the Safety Comm1ttee There was a l1ttle article about CONNIE LEIFESTE the ha1r stylist that had won an academy award for the most original sett1ng and also about a little g1rl, BOBBY JOE BROWNE who broke the drought 1n Texas in the year of 1966 About half way to California I had to change from tra1n to Aeroplane and YVONNE NOBLES was my p1lot I got awful s1ck and VIDA JORDAN, the stewardesshelped me get over my slckness We arrived at about 7 o clock and landed but we could not get out of the plane because MARGIE WIENNECKE the co p1lot, had for gotten to get a perm1t TOMMY SCHMIDT a l1ttle old stubborn dumb pol1ceman would not let us go before we got the perm1t Well finally we ga1ne d permission to go I walked 1nto the exclusive LOU LEMBURG Club that had been named after the architect that designed lt The sight relaxed my mind and well before I knew It I was awake s f VI! f Q4 9 is 5 Q' D WZ!
