I Another year has passed, having been filled with the singing notes of the Mixed Chorus under the direction of Miss Van Patten. This completes the third year for this organization. When the chorus was first organized, there were thirty members. lt has now grown to a membership of fifty-one. Of this number there are twenty-five sopranos, fourteen altos, ten bass, and two tenors. Rehearsals are held twice a week. This year the chorus has given two assembly programs and has sung for the P. T. A. At Christmas they joined the elementary classes and the high school orchestra in the second annual Christmas program presented at the high school auditorium. One of the outstanding groups of songs which the chorus sang was taken from the Messiah which was written by George Frederick Handel. ln April the Mixed Chorus traveled to Leslie to take part in the annual lngham County Vocal Festival in which ten schools participated. Each school sang one number and the group en masse sang five numbers. We will be losing fourteen seniors through graduation this year. 34

Orchestra I The Mason High School orchestra is one of the finest music organizations in the state considering the size ot the school. The organization numbers about thirty-tive musicians who re- hearse under the direction ot Mr. Wyman twice each week. Their repertoire is increasing each year not only in quantity but in quality as well, through their using such numbers on programs as symphonies, tone poems and some ot the better known overtures. Their music is in constant demand for civic as well as student activities as shown by their participation in the second annual Christmas program, several assembly programs, the fourth annual spring concert and the state festival at Ann Arbor. Last year the orchestra placed in second division at the state festival and is returning this year to better the record. Graduation will take ten from the ranks but others are being groomed to take their places so that the membership and musical quality of the orchestra will be maintained. The seniors are Aileen Ziclcgrat, Margaret Sparling, Barbara Petty, Irma Oesterle, Pauline Riggs, Iames Davis, Don Doane, Rachel luderjohn, Vernon Montague and Harry Snell. Cotton, P, Heins, Miss Van Patten O Theres something about singing in a double quartette which has it all over other ways of singing-as solos, in choruses, and the like. You have enough company to keep from being nervous and yet not so many singing around you as make you wonder if that can possibly be your own melodious voice you hear. tlztight then you discover it's your neighbors? This year we would gather around the piano twice a week and have a pleasant time singing while Miss Van Patten would play. Lest we seem selfish, we've gone out to sing on various occasions, have pleased the audi- ences-so they say-and showed them how they too could sing away the time. 35
