We have been ever mindful of the very fine cooperation accorded us in our desire to improve school conditions and school morale. As we recall events in our high school days We are reminded of material improvements made by the Board of Education in reorganizing our school shop, in buying additional typewriters for our commercial de- partment, and in reconditioning the home economics rooms. We are proud of the draperies which have been added to the auditorium which make sound movies possible. We appreciate the many services provided by our school bus in the safe transportation of our student groups to athletic and music contests and such special trips as Greenfield Village. Our music organizations have continued to be out- standing in this section of the state. To you, the members of the Board of Education, goes much of the credit. Your efforts in bringing teacher training Work to our school has resulted in our intro- duction to many new and helpful friends. Again we say-many thanks. 8 P Rl N Cl P SUPERINTENDENT li you cant be or pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valleyebut be The best little scrub by the side ot the filly Be a bush it you can't be a tree. GERALDINE VANPATTEN Vocal Music, History Seventh Grade 0 With awe the seventh graders passed through the huge portals designating their entrance to junior high last September. Their little hearts were pounding furiously: their pulses leaping madly. Everyone seemed to know where he was going but the seventh graders. They appeared in Civics class with the seniors and in French class with the juniors. The fact that it was 6th or 4th hour meant nothing to them. By the end of the first week they discovered lst hour was the first hour in the morning and from there on it was easy. Only in a mob could seventh graders make any headway in the corridors. Alone they were moved down and trod upon by upper classmen. Another of their daily headaches was lockers. l-low fascin- ating it was to see them upen under the experienced hands of an upper classmanl Alone no coaxing, begging, slamming, or kicking would open them. This was conquered finally with practice. Then, too, what would we do without the seventh graders to blame for assembly disturbances. OFFICERS President ...... .... I if.. Freshmen O Last September a host of freshmen entered school from the country bringing with them pep and zip in large quantities. This pep was very noticeable at the football games. Anyone who ever sat next to a freshman vowed they never would again. They didn't understand the game and seemed to think that we had a touchdown every time some one was knocked out by shrill shrieks and screams. They pounded each other black and blue and practically made kindling Wood of the bleachers. Their eager enthusiasm was noticeable in pep meetings, too. Until they had attended a few, they always were coming in strong on the last Rah! Rah! after everyone else had finished. Then, too, most of them didn't know the school songs and supplied Words of their own, making a pleasing C?l harmony. Oh, well we were freshmen once ourselves and can't help admiring their perseverance in spite of upper classmen's smiles. The band, orchestra, athletic departments and many clubs have been greatly benefited by their entrance into high school. FRESHMEN OFFICERS President ......,,.................,.. They jabber French to Freshmen, and draw angles, cir- cles, and what-not. Iuniors are deciding factors in football, baseball, and basket- ball games. They can be seen behind horns, fiddles, and drums at all music programs. The front page news for Maroon and Blue comes from the Iunior class. But, more important than all this, they are the people you see scattered around the building on Friday nights trying to coax a nickel from the candy lovers. Then, you will find Grace Fruin and Lois Ray fcandy managersl bewailing the loss of a candy bar tit was all a matter of additionl. Or maybe it is Gloria Warner and Betty Bateman planning dinners for the teachers. If you are still hungry, there is Bim Franklin, at all football games with hot-dogs and sandwiches. If it is not one of these, it is Doris Thompson urging each Iunior on to bigger sales of Christmas cards. Most distressing of all, Doris Abel wails over a heavy snow storm on the night of the Presidents Ball. It all leads up to a grand finale, however, for it makes pos- sible a reception for the Seniors, a night to be remembered for a lifetime. OFFICERS President ........ , , ......,..... . . . Football O This year's schedule was completed with a record of five victories against two defeats. Mason, having the reputation of being a strong team this year, was feared by its opponents and was considered the team to beat. ln the past years Mason had always lacked a strong scoring punch. This year the Maroons cracked the ice, so to speak, and won games by more than two or three touchdowns. Although it wasn't until midway through the schedule that the ability to score was un- covered, it certainly brought pleasant results. The successive victories over Everett and St. lohns were much the same. Mason easily out-played its opponent but failed to take advantage of the scoring opportunities. The following game with Charlotte was what you might call the disgrace of the year. Except for a few members of the team there was absolutely no fight among the Mason ranks. There was practically no offense and only at times did the defense withstand the thrusts of the opposition. One player who stood out in defeat and did a commendable job under the circumstances was the dependable and consistent Captain Fred Silsby. The following week a team made up partially of inexperi- enced members of the squad took the field against Eaton Rapids. Although they were defeated, these men, inexperienced as they were, put up a great fight and very nearly defeated the big Eaton Rapids team. The remaining games with Central Reserves, Grand Ledge, and Howell are the games the Mason fans wish to discuss and dwell upon. In each of these games the offense and defense clicked smoothly and the tackling was the best seen all year. The scoring punch, kept well hidden all this time for some reason or other, was first displayed in the Central Reserves game and was continued until the close of the season. Mason's initial night game with Grand Ledge on Fitzgerald Field turned out to be a well earned upset and is deserving of special mention. Until the closing minutes of the game every foot of the way was an uphill fight. Every Maroon who participated in the battle gave his best and never before has a Mason football team functioned so smoothly. 20 By graduation the Mason team will lose such star perform- ers as Captain Fred Silsby, Raymond Heincelman, Bernard Fancher, Paul DeRose, Robert Puller, lim Davis, lim Young, Wallace Bailey, Leo Murphy, and Richard Hunter. Of these, the ones Who deserve recognition for playing steady and consistent ball throughout the year are Fred Silsby, center, a line in himself: Robert Fuller, guard, sparlcfplug of the line, giving his opposition the type of fighting they called for, Raymond Heincelman, blocking back, clearing the paths and making it easy for the ball carriers. This season's campaign could not be called successful because there was nothing accom- plished. The games which were Won were games which should have been won and the games lost were games which would have accomplished something if they had been won. In the district tournament, Mason was again eliminated by the smooth-working St. Mary's team after winning from Haslett the night before. The Maroons were expected to go places in the state tournaments but did not live up to the expecta- tions. 22 C3 I - HAXOY 9. Le XX H' '5we'WuQQD' D 'YN Throughout the year the scoring burden was carried mostly by Paul DeRose, center for the Maroons. Others who shared the high scoring honors were Bill Bergin, Bernard Fancher, Raymond Heincelrnan, lim Young. Harry Michitsch, who took Fred Silsby's position when Fred was forced to quit basketball because of an injury, has improved greatly this year and will prove the main cog in the Maroon lineup in the years to come. Mason will be greatly weakened through graduation as all but three members of the team are seniors. The senior members are Paul DeRose, Robert lnghram, Bernard Fancher, Raymond Heincelman, lim Davis, Wallace Bailey, and lim Young. Some fine-looking prospects coming up from the second team are Mike Simone, Ross Hilliard, David Swearingen, Robert Marshall, and Maurice Bailey. These boys have an excellent change to become regulars next year and if they work hard will become Mason's future stars. Captain Paul DeRose 23 Bacl: row-B Vtfeston, I Anderson, B. 'Wilbur, D. Baseball O As is the custom, the Anchora is sent to press at about the same time baseball season opens and little can be said as to the shaping of the team. There are many important positions to be filled which were left vacant as the result of graduation. However, many candi- dates have turned out for these open positions and we are sure there is sufficient material to fill them. The loss of Harry Michitsch, reliable hitter and fast fielding second baseman, through injury is the first bad break to befall the Maroons. This misfortune will weaken the team's prowess at the plate for there are not many consistent hitters on the team. The returning veteran lettermen this year are Raymond Heincelman, Fred Silsby, Paul DeRose, Richard Brown and Duane Evans. Other veterans who were not letter winners are Don Lee, Richard Wolf, Gene Anderson, Bill Bergin, and Robert Colby. The batteries this year will consist of DeRose and Anderson, pitchers, with Don Lee and Mike Simone on the receiving end. ln the last few years, Mason has had winning baseball teams, and, barring unforeseen bad breaks, the Maroons will continue to win this year. The girls out from last year's squad are Kathleen Baker, Margaret Sparling, Geraldine Hunt, Betty Bateman, Eileen Smith, fune Slusser and Dorothy Dietrich. Many girls are out for the first time this year to build up Mason's defense against schools that have had tennis squads longer than Mason. The strength of this year's boys' squad cannot be determined by this year's matches, because as usual the Anchora is published before the season is under way. The only one of last year's star players to return is Vance Mclntyre -but a lot is expected from some of the new candidates. The boys' matches consist of two singles and one doubles match. The girls have worked hard toward earning an M for the year and in doing this it was necessary for them to complete a total of ten sport seasons. Sports played during the year were softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, track, and also minor sports including shuttle-board, darts, badminton, ping- pong, ice and roller skating and hiking. . 6 OFFICERS President ... ... The band numbers forty students besides the drum major and is in demand for many civic functions as Well as school activities. They are on hand for pep-meetings, football games, assembly programs, county and state festivals, all this making quite a program throughout the year. The organization numbers about thirty-tive musicians who re- hearse under the direction ot Mr. Wyman twice each week. Their repertoire is increasing each year not only in quantity but in quality as well, through their using such numbers on programs as symphonies, tone poems and some ot the better known overtures. Their music is in constant demand for civic as well as student activities as shown by their participation in the second annual Christmas program, several assembly programs, the fourth annual spring concert and the state festival at Ann Arbor. Last year the orchestra placed in second division at the state festival and is returning this year to better the record. Graduation will take ten from the ranks but others are being groomed to take their places so that the membership and musical quality of the orchestra will be maintained. The seniors are Aileen Ziclcgrat, Margaret Sparling, Barbara Petty, Irma Oesterle, Pauline Riggs, Iames Davis, Don Doane, Rachel luderjohn, Vernon Montague and Harry Snell. I Another year has passed, having been filled with the singing notes of the Mixed Chorus under the direction of Miss Van Patten. This completes the third year for this organization. When the chorus was first organized, there were thirty members. lt has now grown to a membership of fifty-one. Of this number there are twenty-five sopranos, fourteen altos, ten bass, and two tenors. Rehearsals are held twice a week. This year the chorus has given two assembly programs and has sung for the P. T. A. At Christmas they joined the elementary classes and the high school orchestra in the second annual Christmas program presented at the high school auditorium. One of the outstanding groups of songs which the chorus sang was taken from the Messiah which was written by George Frederick Handel. ln April the Mixed Chorus traveled to Leslie to take part in the annual lngham County Vocal Festival in which ten schools participated. Each school sang one number and the group en masse sang five numbers. We will be losing fourteen seniors through graduation this year. 34 . You have enough company to keep from being nervous and yet not so many singing around you as make you wonder if that can possibly be your own melodious voice you hear. tlztight then you discover it's your neighbors? This year we would gather around the piano twice a week and have a pleasant time singing while Miss Van Patten would play. Lest we seem selfish, we've gone out to sing on various occasions, have pleased the audi- ences-so they say-and showed them how they too could sing away the time. 35 Student Council Const thou prophesy thou little tree, what the glory of thy boughs shall be? One of the important projects of the year, purchased from our nickel-a-week plan, was a movie projector, which makes possible visual education. Probably the outstanding accomplishment of the student council is its success in promoting such fine spirit of coopera- tion amongst the Various organizations and a spirit of good citizenship which prevails among the students of the high school. 36 Mayor Stan Froedtert . Il. poor man's ruined crops is the source of many a rich rnan's humor. Humor A joke is humor. Humor is the spice of life. Girls are made of spice and everything nice. Aren't girls some joke? Landlady: I think you had better board elsewhere. Francis Olney: Oh, I often had. Lcmdlady: Often had what? Francis: Better board elsewhere. O Kindly gent to newsboy: Don't all those papers make you tired? lack Inghram: Now, I don't read 'em. Lucille Dean: I tore up that poem I wrote last week. Miss Lucas: Tore it up? Why, that's the best thing you ever did. Bill Bergin: My girl has had her nose broken in several places. Dick Brown: Well, why don't you keep her out of such places? Virginia: Did you see the beauti- ful sunrise this morning? Marie: I should say not. I got in before sunrise this morning. Officer: Don't you see that sign, Fine for Parking ? Bill Hardy: Yes, I see it and I heartily agree with it. O Teacher: Leo, what is a debtor? Leo: A man who owes a man money. Teacher: What is a creditor? Leo: The man who thinks he is going to get it back. I don't mind my house although it has no door But it's getting to be quite a task To walk around without a floor. Boss: So you want a raise. I worked here for three years at twelve dollars a month. Now I ovm the place. Bob: Well, that just goes to show that a man can't treat his help like that and keep his business. 55 The farmer from Michigan said: Out in my state I grew a pumpkin so big that after sawing it in two, my wife used the shells as cradles to rock the twins in. The New Yorker replied: Yes, but in my state it is a common thing to find three full-grown policemen asleep on one beat. O Boss: Are you doing anything to- night, Miss Petty? Barbara thopefullyl: Not a thing. Boss: Then try and get here a little earlier tomorrow. O Optimist: Well, the depression can't last forever. Pessimist: No, neither can I. O Motorist: You walk around as if you owned the street. Narrowly-missed pedestrian: You drive around as if you owned the car. Don: All the stores in town closed the day my uncle died. Bill: That's nothing. All the banks were closed for three days after my father left town. Cop: You were hitting sixty. lim Siegrist: Oh, that's all right. The salesman said I could go as fast as I wanted to after the first five hundred miles. Teacher: Lyle, what is an alibi? I-Ianna: An alibi is a story prov- ing that you were at a prayer meet- ing where you weren't in order to prove that you were not at a crap game where you were. Peg: Was your date bad-looking? Maudie: Was he! He could get a job reading gas meters in a soror- ity house. Z, N.
