THE YEAR OF THE CROWN MASON COUNTY HIGH RT. 5 MAYSVILLE, KY. VOLUME 21 1981 IN DEDICATION Cheryl Lynn Nichols, a 17 year old senior, lost her life on November 26, 1980. She was a member of the Art Club, Tennis Team and the Band. Cheryl will not be for- gotten by those who shared in her friendship. The Gift of Friendship Friendship is a priceless gift. That cannot be bought or sold. But it's value is far greater than A mountain made of gold. For gold is cold and lifeless It can neither see nor hear. And in a time of trouble. It's powerless to cheer. It has no ears to listen Nor heart to understand. It cannot bring you comfort or reach out a helping hand. So, when you ask God for a gift Be thankful if he sends. Not diamonds, pearls or riches but. The love of real true friends. THE MUNCHKIN SCHOLARS The Home Economics 4 Activities class sponsored nursery school again this year. 32 small children participat- ed, enlightning every teachers day. Activities were planned to take up every spare minute and they covered a wide variety of topics such as, ABC's, Animals, shapes, colors, Hal- loween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and more. They visited the Fire Depart- ment, went Trick-or-Treating through the fieldhouse, had a visit from an Indian, and Santa Claus, and even had a graduation ceremony complete with caps and diplomas. Below: Kelly Thompson (Mrs. Thompson's nephew) Rebbecca Walker (Mr. Chumbler's granddaughter) Racheal Boyd, and Katie Wal- lingford (Mr. Mrs. Wallingford's daughter) pose for a quiet picture. Above: The Munchkins begin graduation by saying The Pledge of Allegiance. 3 SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS THIRD AND BEST HOMECOMING!! On Friday, October 20th, Mason County High School's student body witnessed what seemed to be the best Homecoming ever! The football game was a scream as the Royals beat West Carter in an ex- citing game with the score of 48-6. At halftime, the Homecoming court made their way up the 50 yard line as the crowd became anx- ious to see their 3rd Homecoming queen crowned. The court con- sisted of Tonya Chamberlain with escort Barton Turner, and Lisa Heflin and escort Jamie Pogue represented the freshman class. The Sophomore class voted for Linda Chouinard with escort Sammy Welch and Leigh Hackney with Ron Kimble. Michelle Simms es- corted by John Brannen, and Glenda Heminger escorted by Jeff Gillespe were the juniors on the court. Running for Queen were Tonna Truesdell escorted by Jeff Cracraft, Becky Foster with escort Trent Hamilton, Sandy Jones with David Orme, and Debbie Adamson with escort Jeff Lytle. Anticipation came to a peak as Duane Faris announced the new queen, Debbie Adamson!!! After the incredible game, a dance was held in the gym lobby with music provided by John DeSpain. Everyone enjoyed the home- coming festivities and Mason County High homecoming will grow with excitement as the years go on but the 1980 festivites will not be forgotten. Below: Kathi Ryan and Jeff Dodge reign as the Farm Bureau's King and Queen for the 1980-81 year. 4 1 « - Above left: Andi Osborne rides high on a trac- tor at the FHA Tractor Pull. Below Right: Gina Hart as a mouse. Below: Nannette Bernardin makes a terrific old lady, and could fool anyone with her personation. 6 The Homecoming festivities started on Oct. 9 with the annual slave auction. Nearly 30 brave stu- dents stepped forward, only to be fought over by high bids coming from bloodthirsty students of Ma- son County High School. Mike Saunders was the highest selling slave and the quartet of Libby Willet, Leigh Hackney, Kelly Wallingford, and Libby Willet, Leigh Hackney, Kel- ly Wallingford, and Linda Chouinard placed sec- ond. Caroline Keller and Suzanne Zweigart were the highest selling pair. Homecoming Day, the halls were filled with scuba divers, pregnant house- wives, football players, babies, and the list goes on. Singing in the cafeteria and kissing teachers were the more popular of the commands. Slave Day, 1980 is a day to be remembered as the school rang with laughter all day and the senior class was able to sponsor the best Homecoming dance the school has ever had. PEPPER, OUR BAND IS BETTER! The Mason County High School Band has completed a full marching band season. Under the direction of Field Commander Maureen' McClanahan, the band proudly boasts a seasons winnings of 2 first place tro- phies, and 3 second place trophies. The band also trav- eled to Nashville Tennessee in May of 1980 to partici- pate in a concert band contest where they received a high third place. In October of this year, the band had the rare honor of playing for President Carter at Tri- State Airport in Huntington, W. Va. Joining the Presi- dent were John Y. Brown Jr., Sen. Wendell Ford, Carl Perkins, and Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard. After shaking the President's hand, junior Dawn Scilley remarked, He was a very warm and receiving person. 9 Left: Eddie McDowell, Robert Roe, Bill Phillips, Suzanne Hinton, Sarah Richey, and Jayne Brown have a friendly poker game in a Saloon in Nashville. Below: The Band sets a possible Cuiness record last May in Nashville as the collected 118 pop cans in 2 days. 10 ON OUR WAY... TO THE SUPER BOWL!!! Above and Right: The Mason County Royals' two year old varsity team takes on the Fleming County Pan- thers. There are several senior members of the football team who need to be recognized for their leadership during the great season. They are: Jim Brogan, Mile Murray, Al- len Feldhaus, Tony Pollit, Darrin Wallingford, Mark Crawford, Danny Wheeler, Brian Reed, Bill McDowell, and Wayne Grandison. They did a fine job but our team will still progress like in the 1980 season. Our football team, in just their second varsity season, achieved a fine record of 5 wins and 5 losses. This was a great year for our great team in that they enjoyed their first Homecoming victory by crushing West Carter 48-6. Also this year. Mason County had three players to make first team All-Conference. They were Ken Render—Wide Receiver; Jim Brogan—Middle Linebacker, and Allen Feldhaus— Safety. Feldhaus also made Honorable Mention—All State at the Safety position. Steve Butcher announced his resignation as head coach of the Royals football team. Coach Butcher has been with the Royal Football program from the beginning in the 8th grade. Members of the team and student body would like to express their thanks for such a great job. He will be missed in the future. n BRAVE BOYS BOUNCE BALL, BEAT BULLDOGS IN BURLEY!! The Mason County Royals played three very fine games in the Burley Tournament to win the champion title again for the third year in a row!!! In the opening round of the Burley, the Royals undoubtedly won over Nicholas County, advancing to the semi-finals against St. Pat. After winning a well deserved victory against the Saints, the red hot Royals ad- vanced to a tense final game against the Bulldogs. Neck and Neck all the way was the way this nerve-shattering game went, ending with another tourney win for the Royals. The Art Club won the SAC spon- sored poster contest with this bril- liant poster. The regular season game with the Bulldogs was defi- nitely the ROYAL ROAST AS the Dogs caught the Blue Flu. 12 FAMILIAR FACES 13 FBLA STARTS YEAR WITH A PICNIC Above: Mr. Wallingford, keep your mouth open and maybe you will catch an egg! Right: Gina Hart gets a surprise attack with a water bal- loon from Kelly Hay. Below: Kelly Middleton and Chuck Preston are winners of the egg toss. Below right: Mrs. Wallingford says, Yuk! My egg broke 14 WHAT'S IN IN '81? Jeff Cracraft shows off his I .od fashions above as Charlotte Claybrooke models the Preppy Look below. What are some of the things that happened in 1981? What did we do? How did we dress? Well, styles change with the people and we will look back on this in a few years and laugh. Alligators, foxes, and tigers seem to pop up on sweaters, shirts, jackets, even socks. The girls are into the preppy look with oxford shirts, plaid skirts, knee socks and penny loafers. But the vast majority of both boys and girls wear blue jeans from Levi, Gloria Vanderbilt or Jordache. The popular places around to eat and see friends are Bisetti's on the week-end and McDonald's. WEBN and Q102 blasted from almost every radio playing the latest from DEVO, REO Speedwagon, and Air Supply. Disco is fading and Rock is back. When your kids grab onto this yearbook and read this page, they'll laugh whole-heartedly when mom is wearing a mini-shirt and a pixie hairdo, or when dad has his high waters on and greased back hair. This is 1981. 15 TIE A YELLOW RIBBON In 1972, the writer of the song, Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree , never dreamed that his song about a man returning home from a long absence would be the basis for the reuniting of a country. Almost over- night a country with thousands of beliefs was united for a common cause. The yellow ribbon to every American was a tribute to the fifty-two American Hostages held captive by Iranian Militants for 444 days, (Nov. 4 1979-Jan. 20, 1981). The ribbons, which decorated the country's vast lands was a reminder to the hostages that said, We as Americans have not forgotten you or your struggles as hostages and whatever the cost may be, we will never desert you . When the hostages arrived home, they were greeted by a countryside strewn with yards of yellow ribbon. After seeing this and realizing that all of America had suffered with them, one American hostage remarked, Wr will forever have a love affair with our country . The ordeal was marked by one sad event in April—the failure of a rescue mission, in which eight U.S. service- men were killed. To these bold, bold men a yellow ribbon, symbolizing the promise that their country will neve, forget them or their valiant efforts. 16 THE YEAR OF THE CROWN TABLE OF CONTENTS LIFE'S MIRROR There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave, There are souls that are pure and true. Then give the world the best you have. And the best will come back to you. Give love, and love to your life will flow, A strength in your utmost need. Have faith, and a score of hearts will show Their faith in your word and deed. Give truth, and your gift will be paid in kind; And honor will honor meet; And a smile that is sweet will surely find A smile that is just as sweet. Give pity and sorrow to those who mourn. You will gather in flowers again The scattered seeds from your thought outborne Though the sowing seemed but vain. For life is the mirror of king and slave, 'Tis just what we are and do; Then give to the world the best you have. And the best will come back to you. Why will November 6, 1980, go down in history? Not only was it two days after Ronald Reagan was elected President of our country, Anthony Wenz, junior, was elected President of our school's just-born Student Advisory Committe (SAC). SAC is the offspring of a committee of students who saw how student representation could serve the students and faculty. This committee drafted an election method. Candidates filled out petitions of 25 student and 5 faculty signatures. Officer candidates must be a junior or senior and have at least a B average. Representatives must have at least a C . When Campaign week began, candidates and supporters covered the school walls with posters. Stickers, buttons, and flyers also enlivened the student body as candidates roamed the halls in search of votes. Officer candidates, running for President, gave speeches in an assembly. Sixty-two percent of the student body voted in the Presidential race. SENIORS: Tina Thomas, Jim Brogan, Judy Lo- gan. JUNIORS: Jimmy Vice, Robyn Perraut and Becky Tollner. SOPHOMORES: Randy Curtis, Libby Willet, and Fran Stewart. FRESHMAN: Jenny Forman, Shelia Newsome and Jennifer Best. Above: SAC officers, Jeff Lytle, Anthony Wenz, Ted Struttman. Duane Lambert, social studies teacher, is adviser. SAC's purposes are expressed well in its con- stitution preamble: We, the students of Mason County High School, in order to represent the student body in school management and relations with the faculty and administration, promote good student-faculty relations, assist in the organization of student activities, bring up new ideas, air and resolve student problems, unify the student body and increase student participa- tion. The accomplishments SAC has made this year are: wrote a constitution, set up a bulletin board with activities calendar, located the Spirit Stick for the cheerleaders to award to a class at each pep assemble, sponsored a pep rally and club poster contest, placed four trash barrels on campus decorated Christmas tree and bulletin board and surveyed the student body on their cafeteria food preferences and brought results to the food supervisor. SAC is a very important part of our school system and starting the program this year. 77 SAC'S REPRESENTATIVES 78 SCIENCE CLUB Below: Science Club officere: Jeff Teegarden, treasurer, Suzanne Zweigart, secretary reporter, Kim Weimer, president, Denise Tolle, vice-president. 79 THE ART CLUB BUBBLES OVER WITH TALENT. ACTIVITIES!! Left: Activities Club Officers: Gwyn Heminger, President; Lynn Coleman, Vice President; Tina Thomas, Secretary Treasurer. Mr. Lambert is the club's sponsor. The Activities Club helped out all they could in keeping the high school entertained during as- semblies throughout the year. Performing skits to sell the yearbook was their first job. During every pep rally the club along with a few crazy mem- bers of the school impersonated everything from our teachers during their high school days to preachers and congregation at the Maysville Bull- dogs funeral! Entertainment is what the club is here for. And they have done a terrific job. 81 THE MATH CLUB Math Club Officers: Jeff Cracraft, Vice President; Marla Hatton, Secretary; Kay Cracraft, Treasurer; Kelly Mont gomery. President. The Young Politicians had many projects throughout the year. Be- sides monitoring the local precincts during the Presidential elec- tion, they staged a mock election where students could vote for their candidate. The results were closer than the actual election as the student body had Reagan the winner over Carter by 2 votes. The club also helped in the Student Government election. Blue and White pompons and candy bars were the selling items with the money earned to pay for a trip to Frankfort in April. 84 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Right: Future Farmers of America Officers: Wayne Mastin, Treasurer; Marty Zeigler, Secretary; Jim Rice, Vice-President; Tom Saunders, President; Mike Mahaffey, Report- er; Jeff Dodge, Ass't Secretary; Anthony Wenz, 2nd Vice-President; Jeff Gillespie, Ass't Reporter; Troy Carpenter, Sentinel, Lon Cain, Ass't Treasurer. Among her duties was presiding over two state meet- ings. Kathi also attendended the state meetings of many other vocational groups such as DECA, FBLA and FFA. As a state officer, Kathi attended five regional meetings and was a delegate to the National FHA meeting in St. Louis during July of 1980. She culminat- ed her duties by planning and carrying out this year's state meeting April 23-25, 1981. Andi Osborne and Karen Sapp held regional offices this past year. Karen was the Regional Reporter, and Andi held the post of Regional President and was a na- tional officer candidate for Kentucky. Our region in- cludes twenty-seven schools from 112 counties. In or- der to be elected to an office each girl had to undergo interviews and submit written qualifications. They were then chosen by committee to be voted on by to members of this largest region in the state. 92 Top: Future Homemakers of America officers: Left to right, bottom row: Kim Lowe, Historian; Kelli Bierlin, reporter; Sandy Jones, treasurer; Kathy Ryan, President; Karen Sapp, recording secretary; Marsha Bentley, recreation leader; Lori Ward, parlimentarian; Libby Willett, recreation; Kandy Gilkison, scholarship; Leigh Hackney, honor roll. Their dream had finally come true, and hundreds of Royals fans witnessed their kind words they spoke at the Homecoming party at the fieldhouse. The team was the greatest and every player is a hero and will never be forgotten. The long and joyous 17 days of March will always bring back warm memories as the student body of Mason County High, and the community were brought closer together by one win over another. The Royals are Number 2 in the state, but Number 1 in the hearts of every Mason Countian, some Maysvillians, and many Kentuckians. Allen Feldhaus receives the Ted Sanford Award. 158 ROYALS ARE NUMBER 2 IN KENTUCKY. . . BUT NUMBER 1 IN OUR HEARTS!! Hi,, 'V eVV?'- All the way. Royals! TWO, FOUR, SIX, EIGHT, BOV! DID WE CELEBRATE! Below: Darrin Wallingford decorates his car for the first pa- rade. We paraded through town and showed our support. Center: The parade progressed down third street, met by cheering Fans all along the way. Far Right: Our two brothers Jackson may now be as famous in this part of the country as the Jackson Five are every where else. Charlie Jackson sank shots and worked the ball to stun Shelby County. 160 MASON COUNTY'S GOIN' TO STATE BETTER, and BETTER and BETTER! Those words spoken by Allen Feldhaus Jr. described this year for Mason County. We just wanted to go to the state tournament for the first time. As we won the re- gion, we thought that we were as thrilled as we could be. Boy were we wrong! We went to Lexing- ton filled with pride. We celebrated with our host, Mr. Clyde Barbour. Then we went to watch a basket- ball game. Suddenly we wanted to win that basket- ball game more than any- thing else. Our Royals were playing their hearts out but Mr. Branson made us yell our hearts out. If there is a sixth man, that night, he was Mr. B. Finally that buzzer sounded, and the unbelievable had hap- pened. We had won our first state tournament game. Next came Bryan Station. There was no way we could get by them. Well Cinderella strikes again. Our team just didn't listen to the doubters. We stunned the Defenders and all of Lexington loved us. 161 1. Terry Jackson outfoxed the opponents too with his ball han- dling. As always, Terry was Mr. Cool on the court, upsetting the other side. 2. Our cheerleaders were great. Here we see Karen Sapp and Rhonda Burke joyful as the Royals upset yet another pow- er. 3. Kathy Ryan and Kim Lowe are ready to dance as the team de- nied Bryan Station its easy way to the finals. 4. Our crowds were the talk of Lexington as we supported our Royals. 5. Ever thoughtful. Coaches Feldhaus and Hester plan from the bench. 162 ROYAL 163 h How was this happening? At Mason County, we know that it takes a team to win the big ones. We knew that from past history. We had a team this year, not one man. We also had something else. We had heart. Of any team that has played in the state tournament, the Royals brought more fans with them, and those fans yelled for their team more than ever before. We all pulled together. Billy Hitt, one of the greatest Mason County fans, gives part of the credit to the parents and the school. He felt that this was our year beause all of us, parents, teachers and students had created a feeling of oneness throughout the year. Perhaps he was right. That oneness really car- ried over to Rupp Arena, and the basketball world loved us. 64 I 2 4 3 5 b I We came home and paraded again 2 David Or me worked both inside and out befuddling Hryan Station 3. Allen Feldhaus Jr was clearly the darling of the state tourna- ment, he won the respect of all the spectators 4 We show our love and support for our team 5 Kelly Middleton withstc od pure physical punishment to do his magic mongoose trick b Af received the Ted Sanford Award Now that the tourna- ment is over, those weeks sometimes seem like a wonderful dream. That is until we all start talking about it again. Somehow, people of this county seem to walk a little taller now. We all seem a little friendlier now. Someone said it in the madness in Lexing- ton, This had been good for our county. It cer- tainly has. Let us keep this great feeling of uni- ty! WE LOVE THE ROYALS! THE SHIRTS TELL THE STORY STATE TOURNEY RUNNERS-UP POM-POM PRINCIPAL HELPS CHEERLEADERS LIFT SPIRITS! THESE FACES TELL THE STORIES! THE FANS WERE TERRIFIC!
