MA CO HI VOLUME 14 MASON CO. HIGH SCHOOL Route One Maysville, Kentucky 41056 In finding a theme for this year’s MaCoHi, we decided to look around to find the one thing that most typified the school year. We believe we found that one thing all around us: that one thing being Change. Some found it hard to adjust to the endless change. Oth- ers welcomed changes with opened arms. Everyone felt it, and everyone changed because of it. The following pages picture only a handful of the changes that took place. We haven't room for them all. The most noticeable change was that of our new 'chief executive', Mr. John Branson. Mr. Branson was principal at Bardstown High last year before moving to Mason County. Mr. Jack Herlihy is our new assistant principal. Mr. Herlihy taught at the Mason County Middle School last year. The music department continued its development to include a marching band. The fifty-piece band received a rating of Excellent at the Kentucky Music Association's marching festival at Morehead. The chiefs - Mr. Branson and Mr. Herlihy. 2 This year was the first for Mason County's Marching Band. Louie Neff finds handling tickets much easier than money for lunches. Not only were tickets found in the lunchroom but at the concession stands as well. Lunch tickets? Concession tickets? Unheard of right? Wrong! These new forms of currency have made handling money much easier. Parking permits were a necessity for those who drove. Mrs. Mains collecting a lunch ticket from Mary Wood. 3 The most progressive scholastic change took place in the home economics department where Family Living, a class designed tp help students to be more independent, was intro- duced. The class took numerous field trips including a trip to Eastern State Hospital, The Lexington Narcotics Hospital, and Clopay Corporation of Augusta. One of the most significant changes took place within the faculty with eleven new teachers being hired. This has been the largest number of changes in the faculty in the school's history. So this is who Mickey Lang is dating! Washington Methodist Church. Mike Ravencraft - the Betty Crocker of tomorrow? 4 These are the new additions to the Mason County High faculty. This year's senior trip was moved from Wash- ington, D.C., to Williamsburg, Virginia. The students had expressed their discontent with trav- eling to Washington annually, so the above change was made. For the first time ever, a student council was formed at Mason County. The Council consisted of two students from each homeroom with Ann Wood presiding over the meetings. The Council had many involved discussions over school poli- cies . The Student Council helped to further the education of its members as well as its advisors. This year the seniors voted on where to go for the senior trip. President Ann Wood, calling a Student Council meeting to order. 5 This year, the student dress code was more relaxed than in the past. Girls wore jeans and boys allowed their hair to grow, which helped to create a more relaxing atmosphere for the students, if not the fac- ulty. The students were blessed with an 'after hours’ soft drink machine, which was a favorite meeting place after school. Judy Love and Kim Bramel stopped for a rest on our new Coke machine. What once was a crime is now legal concerning girls' jeans. Jeff McKeehan is shown exercising his rights con- cerning the dress code. 6 The Royals took on a new look this year with their style of play and their new uniforms. The flashy blue and white pinstripes and long warm-up pants gave them a professional look. The Royals new looks were also attributed to their new head coach. Mr. Gary Jefferson. Mr. Jefferson had been the assistant coach until his promotion. In his first year of head coaching, Mr. Jefferson was extremely successful, taking his team to the finals of the regional tournament. Mr. Bill Leet was the assistant coach under Mr. Jefferson while also coaching the junior varsity The Royals slaned off year in new uniforms. squad. Last year Mr. Leet coached the freshman team. Coach Bill Leet is shown instructing his Junior Varisity team. Coach Gary Jefferson, giving last minute game plans. Table of Contents: 4 A Breeze? Not what you think . . . Togetherness A Ball? School Play The first play of the year was David and Lisa, a drama centered around a school for emotionally disturbed teenagers. David, played by Michael Ravencraft, is the only son of wealthy parents and is tortured by his mania against being touched; and Lisa, played by Mindy Bernar- din, is a girl who has never known parental love and has developed a split personality. The play takes place at Berkley School, where they are under the care of Alan Swinford, played by Jim Parker. Also appearing in the play were Carla Whalen, Bill Rice, Teresa Cropper, Linda Coburn, Sandy Wright, Terri Middendorf, Susan Hicker- son, Lesley Reynolds, Terry Carter, Joey Kinney, Mark Tubbesing, David Bashaw, Michelle Jackson, and Kurt Hook. Assisting with directing was Dale Horner. Luanne Kilgus and Ronnie Henson were in charge of production. Proper- ties and backstage crew were handled by Les Haydon, assisted by Kim Miley. Ann Wood served as costume mis- tress. Joe Prather and Kurt Hook ran lighting for the play. Make-up crew consisted of Dottie Brewer, Melissa Turner, Diana Snipes, Kimm Wright, Kim Ormes, Kavin Hamil- ton , and Sharon Johnson. Ushers included Sabrina Osborne, Darrell Ward, Jimmy Estill, Jimmy Dillon, Rick Fegan, Mary Jo Cropper, and Debbie McGee. David and Lisa in the park. Berkley School students. Barbara, Played by Terry Carter, and Dr. Swin- ford. Dr. Swinford and David Director - Miss Barbara Messer 13 The band underwent many changes this year. Now the band is marching and has participated in march- ing contests at Campbell County and Morehead. The Band Boosters Club has initiated a fund-raising drive in order to purchase new uniforms. Money-making projects have included the sale of cosmetics, pop- corn , and cake raffles during home basketball games. Another change is the new director, Mr. Ted Williams, a graduate of Morehead State University, who replaced Miss Wanda Majors. Fifteen choirs were selected from the United States from ninety who were nominated by a panel of outstanding choral directors in the nation. The Choir and Choral parents have been very busy raising funds to make this exciting trip. Included in the money-making projects were: the New-to- You Shop, selling chances on a car, and selling baked goods at home ballgames. Mrs. John Harrison, manager of the shop, and Mrs. Coralie Runyon, showing merchandise to a customer. Steven Carlisle, selling chances on the Vega. The bake sales proved successful at the home ballgames. Opening Game of 10th Region Mason County played host to the 10th Regional Basketball Tournament again this year. The first game saw the Royals Squeeze by Bracken County by the score of 56-54 in overtime. Tony Breeze hit a driving layup with six seconds to go to cap- ture the win. Wayne Ross and Steve Lofton led the Royals in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Breeze finished with 12 points, followed by Dale Horner with 6, Don Black, and Bill Jackson each with 4, and Greg Murphy with 1 point. The win vaulted Mason County into the semifinals of the tour- nament against Bourbon County. HERE COME THE ROYALS! Determined Dale Horner grabs another rebound for the Roy- als. This rebound belongs to the Royals as Steve Lofton (42) and Wayne Ross (44) surround the basketball. Steve Lofton (42), struggles to gain control of loose ball as Tony Breeze looks on. Senior Trip The Senior Class left on their annual excursion in early May; this time traveling to Williamsburg, Virginia rather than Washington, D.C. The group of 100 was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. William Boggs, Miss Dorothy Forgy, Mrs. Doris Cain, and Mr. Tom Metcalfe. The trip lasted three days and included such sights as Monticello, a cruise on the Hampton Roads Harbor, the Douglas MacArthur Memorial, the Williamsburg Wax Museum, and Colonial Williamsburg itself. Williamsburg was the capitol of Virginia during the Revolutionary War until it was moved to Richmond for defense purposes. The town has been completely restored to its historical state by John D. Rockefeller. Do you remember waiting in the rain to enter Monti- cello? Mr. Metcalfe points out the day's agenda to Joey Kinney. Mass confusion - getting a room key!! 17 Seniors — Williamsburg, Va. Land of the Rising Sun Junior-Senior Prom while crownbearers were Sue Ann Lit- ton and Aric Porter. Refreshments were served by Junior class mothers from a bamboo shack. Also a pan of this hospitality was a tea house where low tables had cushions placed on the floor for the Oriental effect. Music was presented by Bogus of Cincinnati. Cherry blossoms, a stately Buddha, a ricksha and a bamboo shack were a few of the decorations that made the Mason County High School Junior-Senior prom one of memorable beauty as 450 guests assembled at the Mason County Middle School for the event. Vickie Wheeler reigned as queen of the prom and sharing the throne as king was Wayne Ross. Junior attendants were Tina Frey and Mark Cotten, 21 Graduation On May 29th, the 14th annual Commencement Exer- cises were held at Mason County High School with Dr. Adron Doran, President of Morehead State University, giving the address for the 150-member graduating class.
