ELZA WHALEN, JR. is to organize, to plan, and to maintain proper human relationships. In these areas the high school administrator finds many rewarding experiences, especially when progress can be seen. Organization and planning help create an atmosphere involving pur- pose and common goals within the classroom. Hu- man relationships contrib- ute toward creating a de- sire on the part of students and teachers to do a better job. When achievement in all areas improves, a fetter school results. It is the desire of any principal to be a personal friend and counselor of each individ- ual student and teacher, even though it is sometimes a lonely job when decisions must be made and admin- istered based upon facts which he alone will or can know. MR. ELZA WHALEN, JR., Principal MR. FRED CHUMBLER MRS. THELMA BECKETT MRS. SUE ROSSER Assistant Principal Secretary Secretary LANGUAGES Encouraging curios- ity in literature from classical to modern, the Mason County Eng- lish Department offers courses dealing with grammar and the origin and development of the English language. Engendering a know- ledge of the foreign languages, Latin and French are offered, also. Miss Jean Brannon - English Miss Dorothy Forgy - Latin and French Mrs. Evelyn Barnett - English Mrs. Sharon Mitchell - Algebra, Geometry, General Mathematics Mr. Virgil Fryman - Algebra, Trigonometry MATHEMATICS Mathematics is a world of systems and of laws. I entered my first Algebra class already hoping that it was over, but as my competent teacher helped me to apply my knowledge in a practical way, I learned that while it was puzzling, it was also very exciting. Mrs. DeeAnn Simpson - General Mathematics Algebra Miss Ann Thompson - Geometry, Algebra SCIENCE From atoms to infinity, the world of science is a world for the curious, the imaginative, and the persistent. The science fields used to plague me, until the right doors were opened by those teachers whom I had the opportunity to study under. They taught me the thrill of scientific study that lies in the application of reason and the powers of obser- vation. Mr. Charlton Fields - Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science Mrs. Anna Woodward - General Science Mr. Carl Kegley - Biology, Physical Science 13 Mrs. Agnes Cracraft, Teacher's Aid Being able to read solves most of the hardships in my classes. To make sure that I knew more about this basic subject, I found special teachers. They too were benefited by their assistant, Mrs. Cracraft. Sometimes I found it quite difficult to de- cide what class I should take. If I ever had this happen, I found the guidance counselor to be most helpful. Mr. John Snider, Guidance Counselor Anything I wanted to know, or any place I wanted my imag- ination to travel was right at my fingertips. The library proved to me that without books, I would have been at a complete loss in my studies. I dis- covered the librar- ian who aided me in my search for my information. Mrs. Sarah Nash, Librarian Mrs. Marie Doran Remedial Reading Not pictured - Mrs. Jane Doran 14 Mr. Steve Barnett Social Studies and Commerce Mr. C. J. Bailey, Social Studies SOCIAL STUDIES One needs to have an overall knowledge of what is going on in the world and what has taken place. Knowing what great leaders have done or are doing has made me want to do more for this wonderful world of ours. Mr. James Morgan, Social Studies Miss Julie Kinney, Social Studies COMMERCE I'm prepared for the business world - that place of typewriters clicking, and brains working to keep all affairs in order. I'll now be capable of keeping my own records correctly and neatly because I have learned these important traits. Mrs. Diana Orme, Commerce 15 Mr. Ronald Morgan - Band Mrs. Coralie Runyon, Vocal Music ARTS Education is more than knowledge gained from a text- book or learned from a lecture. It is a period of growing appreciation of the finer things in life - a broadening of one's world obtained by contributing time and talents to different facets of the arts. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION The department of Health and Physical Education has as its aim the development of physically, mentally, emotion - ally, and socially fit citizens who will be productive mem- bers in our democracy. Mr. Jim Mitchell Head Coach Mrs. Vicki Whitmore Health and Physical Education Mr. Gary Jefferson Health and Physical Education Assistant Coach The Home Economics Department and the Agricultural Department offer a broad education with special training in var- ious areas. Their purposes are to assist students in becoming persons with reasonable understandings and abilities to apply the principles learned to their every-day lives. Mrs. Norine Bane, Home Economics Mrs. Ann Porter, Home Economics Mr. Gary Truesdale, Agriculture Mr. Fred Chumbler, Agriculture Experiences in Industrial Arts enable students to develop attitudes, abilities, and habits desirable for all citizens of a scien- tific and technological society, regardless of occupation pursuits. Mr. Gerald Orme, Industrial Arts 17 MARTHA ALDRIDGE RICKY ALEXANDER CHARLES ALLISON JERRY ARNOLD To be a senior is to experience something new and exciting each day. One of my first experiences was to elect my class governing force. The class officers were as follows: Cathy Curtis, President; Dana Scott, Vice-President; Jean Ann Pyles, Secre- tary; Larry Jefferson, Treasurer; Mike Gardner, Reporter. I worked selling concessions at ballgames; I played my last game, and I cheered my last cheer as a high school student. These last happenings proved sad, but still I was happy to know that I had made new friends that would be a part of my entire life. Near the year's end, I joined my class and jour- neyed to Washington D. C. Not only did I find the trip enjoyable, but also I became better acquainted with my fellow classmates. After returning, I went to the prom. I could sit there and realize how much work juniors had done for me. Finally I got to make the walk down the gym's aisle up to the stage. Here I received what I had worked so hard for - my diplo- ma. I realized what I had thought would take for- ever ended much too quickly. 18 JERRY BARBOUR 19 PATRICIA BOLDEN JOHN BOONE DEBROAH BOKTINS KARLA BOWLES BILLY BOYD MARGARET BOYD GERALD BRAMEL SHARON BROWN 20 JOYCE CLARK MARSHA CLIFT JUDY COLEMIRE DIANA COOPER 21 JUDY COOPER JOANN COOPER LINDA COOPER MARY COOPER PEGGY COOPER ROBERT CRACRAFT CATHY CURTIS GEORGE DAY 22 RAYMOND DODSON FREDDIE EDWARDS WILLIAM EVANS KAY FETTERS LARRY FULTON 23 RANDY GAITHER BRENDA GALLAGHER MIKE GARDNER LOYD GARRETT NINETTE GIFFORD DEBROAH GINN TOM GOBEN JAMES GIFFORD REBECCA GRIFFITH LINDA HENDERSON BETTY HICKERSON LARRY HICKMAN PATTIE HORD 25 ROBERT HORD ELAINE HOSKINS LOIS HOWELL DAVID HYMAN DIANA INLOW ROBERT JACKSON MICHAEL JACKSON LARRY JEFFERSON 26 BOB KING NANCY KING ELIZABETH KISKADEN DEBROAH LAWLER SUE LENNEX BARRY LEWIS PAUL LOFTON SAMUEL LOFTON 27 DORIS LOWE DEBBIE MAINS STEVE MALLORY DENNIS MALONE SUSAN MAS TIN BRENDA MASON ROY MASON NELSON MAYNARD JERRY MIDDLETON JUDY MITCHELL VICKIE MOORE JAMES MUSE CARL OVERLY 29 ANN PARKER JUDY PARKER LARRY POE MIKE POE DEBORAH PUMPELLY LORENIA PURCELL JEAN ANN PYLES DELLA PORTER JACKIE PORTER FRANK RING CONNIE ROBINSON BARBARA ROSS LINDA ROSS RONALD RANKINS JENNY REDMOND CHERRY REED GILDA RENCHEN f DANA SCOTT PHILLIP SLEDD 32 WANDA TENERY BILLY THOMPSON GLENDA TILTON PATRICIA TOLLNER JOE TRAXEL DAVID TUEL 33 PAMELA VANCE WILLIAM WARNER TOM WISE JO ELLEN WHITE KATHY WRIGHT 34 Brenda Allen Randy Anderson Gary Applegate Kenneth Applegate Carrie Authur Gary Bailey Ricky Bailey Randy Barker Debbie Beckett Wilma Bellamy Debbie Biddle Eugene Bouldin Mary Bolden Stella Bolden Mattie Boulden Dudley Boling Tommy Bothman Bill Boyd 36 I was proud to be a JUNIOR. I learned that it was a tremendous help to learn to work together as a class. Leading us in our year's work were the officers of the class: Mark Vice, President; Steve Parker, Vice-President; Jane Henderson, Secretary; Mona Ward, Treasurer; and Christi Clarke, Reporter. As far as work was concerned, I helped with plenty. We needed to make money so we began a coat check at ballgames. Each game also gave us another enterprise because we sold programs concerning each game. We had a car wash at the beginning of the year. All year we worked for this money, and at the end of the year, we spent it on the prom. This investment was worthwhile. As I look back at the work, the fun we had, and the beautiful prom the entire class created, I can visualize a year full of wonderful memories. I practiced student politics when I helped decide who were the ablest to lead our class. Fred Chumbler was named President, and to assist him in his duties as Vice President Valerie Soward was chosen. Our Secretary Libby Kelly did her job capably, as did the Treasurer Cheryl French in keeping the financial records in order. Serving for Reporter for the class of '71 was Connie Schooler. I learned that to become idle is to step out of Mason County's progression, so I joined together with others to work for my class, but more importantly, for the school. I was exhausted one night after cutting our more than one hundred crowns which were sold the week before the Maysville-Mason County basketball game, but I flooded with pride when I saw my crowns on the heads of the student body. Blisters, wet feet, and plenty of laughs describe well our Hobo Day, but the profits we reaped and unity that was formed make it all worthwhile. J. R. I took part in the class elections at the beginning of the year. As our President we elected Billy Collins, followed by Stocky Wood as our Vice President. Our Secretary, Debbie Downing, had a hard job to accomplish, and we were equally proud of Tommy Butler whom we elected as Treasurer. The job of reporting the class activities was placed upon the shoulders of Donna Day. I and all of my peers worked hard to keep pace with our predecessors, and as the year flew by with incredible speed, our class projects better enabled us to feel more a part of makeup of the student body. At one ballgame a strange feeling swept through me as my companions and I shouted V-I-C-T-O-R-Y, that's the Freshman battle cry. From then on I realized what it meant to be a Royal, and I suddenly knew why the upperclassmen held their heads up high and always looked like they were walking in a cloud of pride. 48 Jan Anglemyer Wanda Bailey Debbie Barker Glenda Beckett Linda Berry Cindy Biddle Mary Boone Rita Brooks Darlene Brown Kay Brown Debbie Burke Sue Carpenter Kathy Castle Carol Chamblin Alice Chouinard Shirley Clay Debbie Cline Louise Comer Marietta Cooper Mary Cooper Phyllis Cooper Mark Cracraft Gerald Cracraft Rhonda Craig Shirley Crouch Donna Davenport Gary Davis Mary Davis Donna Day Patsy Day Lillie DeVaughn Debbie Downing Pam Doyle Sharon Doyle Mattie Estep Roy Faul Darrell Fields Janice Fleming Lisa Flora Scottie Florence Kay Follmer Susan Fowler Gary Fox Debbie Fraley Danny Fritz Russell Fritz Mary K. Truly these choir members flooded all of England with The Sound of Music. This year has been a rewarding one for the choruses with the Morehead Choral Clinic, Christmas Concert, Lexington Symphony Or- chestra, Morehead Concert Choir, Maryland College Hallelujah Choir, Morehead Contest with 28 superiors, and the grand finale of the Spring Concert. Much praise is due Kathy Wright who ac- companied each chorus and Mrs. Coralie J. Runyon whose excellent guidance has proven to be most outstanding and rewarding. 66 1« •••IS I I I- H 1«  ♦ 1« 9, «.« vl .. . . - - -- ■■■! : M I •( I t If V , I • ,L BAND RATES SUPERIOR IN CONTEST In April, the Mason County High School Band traveled to Morehead State University for a contest, and there received a superior rating. At the beginning of the year, the band played at pep rallies and at all home basketball games. The group is under the capable direction of Mr. Ronald Morgan. R0V4L PINWCLE. The school's newspaper is published once a month to let us know everything that is happening in our school. The group adopted through the Christian Children's Fund, a nine year old girl, Lin Chu Tan from Pintug, Taiwan. The Royal Pinnacle advisor is Miss Ann Lyons. Editor Debbie Botkins Advisor Miss Ann Lyons MA 00 M Hard work, tears, and perseverance do not even begin to describe the effort needed to create the MA CO HI. A chaos of pencils, pictures, papers, and rulers somehow fall into place to form a story of Mason County High. The editors are the ones who must keep a watchful eye over every facet of the book. They do this through skill, patience, and sometimes a sympathetic shoulder or a deadening scream. MA CO HI is born and developed through spurts of creativity, some shortness of temper, and very often much laughter. It often appears that it will never be finished, yet, through some heaven- sent miracle in May, it is. MA CO HI Sponsor Mrs. Connie F. Serving as the Queen's attendant was Miss Christy Clark. Mr. Ronnie Lyons was the King's attendant. For the coronation, they were seated on wicker thrones in a grass hut. Themed to Isle of Paradise, the scene was one of tropical beauty. Around the walls were scenes of the shoreline with sparkling water beyond. Blue, white and green streamers hung from the ceiling and at vantage points about the room, ancient Tiki gods brooded over the festive atmosphere. Near the center, lush vines covered a simulat- ed pool and palm trees added their beauty to the setting. High on each wall, warriors' shields hung and at one end of the gym an erupting volcano spouted smoke and flamed skyward. Dancing was enjoyed to the music of The Illusions, from Winchester, Kentucky. drai 'aojhos PLAY PALL I Batter up ... faster ... first ... second ... safe! Fly ball! Stay- wait - in right field! Now!
