Close contests for student council positions revealed the student body's interest in this ex- pression of democratic principles. After electing officers for the year, the council immediately began to function. Auto booster plates were sold by each representative, and Homecoming plans gradually took shape. October 28 was the date set for the gala event, and five committees were organized to make plans. Enthusiasm hit a new high in the home' room decorating contest, as room 318 walked off with first prize. The annual poster contest was won by Doris Cunningham. Publicity was terrific as 2000 homecmoing pins were sold. Representatives and alternates phon- ed most of the homes in Mason City advertising the bonfire and football game. To top off this most successful homecoming, 750 students at- tended the victory dance and crowning of the queen after the game. X..- X . , i 'V H Q 5 X i R Q .-8' Q Ev .ftfegx W-t. Judy Taylor, Pat Otte, Howard Braby, and Richard Jensen were chosen delegates to the annual October convention of Iowa Student Councils in Marshalltown. In November a committee from Mr. Keithahn's social problems class asked the council to do something about the teen-age traffic problem. A committee was appointed to look into the mat- ter. Before the council had time to act, four teen- agers were killed at Hampton and Mason City's police department decided to crack down on teen- age drivers here. Many parents were opposed to this so the council determined to show them that M.C.H.S. was definitely behind the police depart- menti' a movie about traffic accidents and a patrolman were brought in for an all school assembly, and a letter to all Mason City citizens was published in the Globe-Gazette. The article was given nation wide acclaim for its stand on teen-age driving, and the council was congratu- lated by several schools throughout the country. A high tribute was given the Student Council by Principal H. J. Snyder when he declared it to be one of the best councils M.C.H.S. has ever had.
