Although the team won but two games, it was a scoring threat from any place on the field, with Al Di Marco's brilliant passing and the running of Bud Burgess and 'lim Sears often gaining twenty or thirty yards. Mainstays in the forward wall of the machine were Chuck liiser, Morris Macer, Melvin Rutt, and jim Miller. The T formation, introduced this year, was extremely intriguing from the fans' point of view: the mystery of the season was what happened to the liall lmetween the time quarterback Di Marco got it and the time it was found someplace downfield in the hands of one of the lmackfield men-Another one of life's little mysteries. ison B. Quiek and tricky, l onsie led his teammates in scoring during the season. His deadly accuracy often pulled the team out Of a tight spot. The find ofthe year was Long john Holmen, the 0 ft.-Z in. center. john developed a one-hand push shot from his post position that was comparable to the days when Don Pickell poured 'em through. One of the most eonsistent players on the team was lloli Duteher, the other forward. 'l'hough not a high scorer, Dutch was 14 player who kept the other team's seore down, being a regular tger on defense. A junior of whom much is expected next year is Lloyd Klein, who manned a guard position. Track Under Coach Bill Moore, the track program in M. C. H.S gained prominence, with over forty boys taking regular workouts. Many returning veterans plus enthusiastic and plentiful sophomore talent gave a new spirit to the cinder sport, and as a result left many favorable impressions as to their ability. Great- er strength was also shown in the field events. Mohawk teams entered the Iowa State Teachers and Estherville relays, the Big Seven Conference meet, and numerous dual meets. Also in the field of athletics was the new gym program for boys, introduced in mid-year as compul- sory physical training. Every day some 400 boys donned gym suits and took exercises designed to build up back, chest, and arm muscles as an aid to the national defense program. Top ROWXW H IDS Af. - lx 3 N MD0dge, KNEE S. It is wartime now. No time for false ideals: join the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Corps, and free the world. You know General Sherman was right. War is wearing a trim uniform-and a moratorium on personal freedomg saving your tin cans-and seeing your best friend die, getting up an hour earlier-and hating people you've never even seen, licking defense stamps+-and making murder not only honorable but indis- pensable, going without tin, rubber, wool, aluminum, so that the job of destruction may go on more efficiently. War is a brief period of flaming patriotism and ersatz values, and then a half century of cleaning up the debris. But peace can be hell too-seeing the world drawn helplessly into a tightening, writhing knot of envy and fear and hatred by the Frankenstein of powerg torn between abhorrence of ruthless tramp- ling of innocent peoples and fear of being committed to bloodshed- the crime, labor, and despair of war. Knowing what the war involves for them, millions of Amer- icans are unhesitatingly staking everything on one of the biggest gambles of history. It is now life or death for the nation. This year something happened- or perhaps a few wires were cross- ed tor pulledl and surprise! sur- prise! Two girls were elected for the first time in history. The story behind the story, if revealed, would expose the tactics used by the boys in previous elec- tions. The idea was to nominate just three boys. VVhen the girls reversed the tables and used the same trick, the boys were indeed angered, to such an extent that they suggested that the girls not be allowed to vote. This raised the question ffrom a certain 4ft. llin. redheadl, Do the boys be- lieve in women's suffrage? As the year went on, it became more and more evident that a mix- ed council is compatible, and J. C. suffragettes are campaigning for legislation to make women for Student Council a set rule. Clubs Organize College Y opened its year's pro- gram with a tea honoring fresh- inen. Miss Nancy Halsor, pres- ident, announced her cabinet and intentions Cgood or otherwisej. Freshman girls were properly haz- ed and humbled at the spook initi- ation. Fashion notes: anklets and pumps were all the rage for a day. The Collegiates must have been organized, but it's a big secret except for the speech Bob Mott delivered in assembly. However, they did enroll enough members to sponsor the very successful first dance of the season. Wig and Masque got under way with Lafe Stueland speaking on Orson Welles, and taffy apples. Football At least 30 men came out for opening practice, and a quick look at the new coach. CEd. Bouquet: to the eleven men who stayed the whole season.J Introducing New Faculty Members Two new members of the J. C. faculty are Miss Louise Shenaut, librarian, and Coach Chan Welch. Likeable, lovely, lithe Louise is a welcome addition to our little group, and furthermore, she has lost none of her popularity with her pleasant requests to leave the study hall. Under her regime, the library is almost rivalling Dairy- land in popularity. Cussin' Coach Chan is College Y's candidate for All-American coach, His is the novel way of routing out basketball and football squads. That is by appealing to the feminine half of the J. C. to induce their boy friends, to go out for sports. It was a good systemg just look at the good teams he got that way. Coach Welch is looking forward to a good season next year, if the war does not interfere too drastically. K. M. A. elects officers. 'Nuff said. wo- 4- in We hear Miss Oulman calls him Elmer! ni ni x There's nothing rusty about Roger. Ask Becky. J. C.'s own brain trust, composed of Barbara Reed, Eileen Bryant, Gilda Ebert, Ruth Janssen, and Dorothy Petitt, has been in action since September 9. Miss Reed is a particularly fine English student, while Miss Bryant reaches her forte in European his- tory. Miss Ebert is a math wizard, and Miss Janssen is the consistent- ly high scorer in economics classes. There is a rumor circulating that Miss Petitt is tutoring Mr. Ashen- felter. Collegiates, Take Steps It is rumored that a Collegiate Club capacity crowd, consisting. of the president, social chairman, and two unofficial members, have de- cided to take drastic steps to im- prove the club's notoriously poor attendance. The said Collegiates, after taking inventory, placed Bob Wallace in charge of a telephone list. We will not be surprised if various blondes or redheads occasionally show up at meetings, stated one member. At any rate, the attendance has been boosted to fifteen, according to a survey taken at the Green Mill. Dum, Dum De Dum That peculiar noise you've been hearing at intervals throughout the school year is the music of bells- wedding bells. lt seems Dean Rugland started it all last June, closely backed up by Mr. Minor the following Hal- lowe'en. Just before spring vacation, we lost one crack dramatic coach, Miss Oulman, to H. S.'s own Clarence Elmer Schneider. Now the students are taking it up. Remember Vera Dvorak? She's Mrs. Claus, now. C. socialites are congrat- ulating themselves as the highly successful social season for 19-ll-42 is drawing to a close. Plans for the annual banquet are being made, and this event, ending the season, will take place after final examin- ations. The season opened with a bang at the dance after the first football game. Billy Hughes' orchestra was engaged by the Collegiate Big Businessmen, and according to the financial report, literally mil- lions were made. At the get-acquainted mixer, sponsored by Collegiates and Col- lege Y, October 8, the faculty en- tered into the spirit of the occasion, and took part in a quiz game. Mrs. Rugland and Mrs. Minor-to-be were guests. College Y seemed to specialize in juke-box dances this year. Big name bands for only 356 was their slogan, and reports indicated that nobody minded if the bands weren't there in person. Every Daisy Mae had her chance for a date with her Lil' Abner the night of November 14, 'cause that was the night girl asks boy-and the girls paid and paid. ln the Dog Patch skit presented in the af- ternoon, everybody roared at Amy Lou CMammy Yokumj Haight, and thet thar danged pig. Hob Wallace as Lil' Abner had a wonderful time being pursued by Shirley fllaisy Maeb Holmen. Wig and Masque sponsored both the assembly and the dance. The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Hop planned and executed by the Student Council was held Novem- ber 25 at the Surf Ballroom. Cliff Kye's music was featured, and al- though it was a no corsage affair, a few reactionaries appeared with a blossom or two. Highlight of the evening was the presentation of a deluxe phaeton to the lucky raffle winner, Monk Arroyo. The car formerly was the property of two gentlemen about college, Mr. Rich- ard liastian and Mr. Charles Kauf- man. A turkey was also given a- way. Defying the precedent that has been set for the annual Collegiate- College Y formal, Collegiates took the whole burden on their manly shoulders, and put on one swell formal, February 19. llobby Griggs and his orchestra provided the music.
