01111 EW MA UUUTAH Although for some time there was a definite realization of the crying need for a new Mascoutah Community High School, the first tangible plans were miide in january, 1948, with the holding of an election for a bond issue for S550,000, followed in June by another for S75,000. Ballots were almost unanimously cast in favor of a new high school. Under the supervision of the architect, Mr. Albert Goeclde, and the general contractor, Mr. Ferdinand Ganschinietz, construction began during the autumn of 1948, The ceremony for the laying of the cornerstone took place on October 12, 1948, The building, 47,000 square feet of space-325 feet in length and 65 feet in width-consists of a central structure and two wings, one well equipped for indus- trial arts, and the other containing the gymnasium, which may also be used as an auditorium, The dimensions of the gymnasium, which has a combination stage and roll-away seats in addition to permanent bleachers, are 100 feet by 64 feet floor space, and the seating capa- city is 1600.
