There have been validictorians every year, that ' s nothing special But. if anyone knows Layne. they know he is not just your everyday student Layne is in three Advanced Placement classes, one of which in indepen- dent studs math At Masco, there is one calculus class which twenty students are in To be in this class is an achievement as a senior The amazing thing is. Lay ne took this class w hen he was a sophomore Math has always been easy for Layne He tied for fourth in a national math meet at Penn State Umver- sit He also placed seventh in a Massachusetts chemistry competition He is captain of the Math Team He has also received the Harvard Book Award tor academic excellence. All these achievements are impressive but to look at Layne you would not stereo-type him as a “brain”. Layne is part of the “Gators swim team, affiliated with Harvard Univer- sity He has won the most improved swimmer award three times and plans to swim competitively in college He also played water polo when he lived in Cincinnati, Ohio I like swimming because I can concentrate on i| and forget about everything else, Layne says Swimming occupies much time Layne swims every day-twice a day , four times a week He gets up four mornings a week at 4:30 to go into Boston to swim for two hours before going to school. Sometimes, Layne gets only three hours of sleep a night Yet he still maintains his high academic standards Layne is so brilliant you want to put him on a pedestal, but he’s so genuinely friendly, you can’t.” comments one student Sure. Layne is smart. But. if he was detached like some geniuses no one would care. It is his sense of humor and personality that makes him stand out. notes Mr. Meinelt, teacher of four years. She has been named to almost every all-star team in the state ir four years Kendall has shattered the Massachusetts record tor goal ronng by over forty goals In basketball . Kendall was also named the Cape Ann League Player of the ear The season of her junior year, she scored her 1000th point in basket- ill She has been credited nationally in USA Today tw ice for outstanding hletic achievements She is one of the lew woman athletes in the country to rcr 100 goals in soccer and over 1000 points in basketball Kendall is a captain in all three sports. His name is Jesus Damia, and he’s an exchange student who is spending a year living with a host family in Boxford. What inspired him to come to America? I wanted to come in contact with another culture and practice my English. Jesus comments. Jesus is an exceptional person, taking on many challenges. FISCHER FINE TUNES HIS FUTURE The leader with the band Fischer soloing at a recent gig. Watch for this band ' s name in lights Years from now, the l l JKH Masconomct graduates may find their children silting through the albums by Dave Fischer at their favorite record stores. David Fischer is an aspiring musician, hoping to “make it big after he graduates in June His passion for music has existed ever since he was young The turning point came when, at the ripe age of twelve, he received a guitar as a Christmas gift. Since then, he has worked unrelentlessly to develop his natural talent into someth- ing which could one day make him a star It’s hard sometimes to go on w ith all the competition. But the one thing that keeps me going is the positive reaction from my audience, Fischer comments Dave not only plays the guitar, he writes many of his own songs as well. His songs are written from his strongest emotions and most memorable experiences. He has the uncanny ability to personalize his music which captivates his audience. His rising talent has gained him publicity which has resulted in successful shows. Dave has been with his latest band since (his past summer. His latest gig was at the Topsfield Fair in October. The turnout was excellent This was their first major show and it has inspired them to move on. Dave’s talent and devotion will soon be taking him and his band to clubs throughout the Greater Boston area The band has high hopes for their future in the music industry. “I want to make it and with the reaction we’ve been getting, it seems like we have a good chance. says Fischer.
