Who do you know who’s from Seville. Spain, believes that it’s important for a person to spend time alone, and is hoping for a scholarship? His name is Jesus Damia, and he’s an exchange student who is spending a year living with a host family in Boxford. What inspired him to come to America? I wanted to come in contact with another culture and practice my English. Jesus comments. Jesus is an exceptional person, taking on many challenges. According to him, the culture shock was not as big as expected It’s pretty much the same.” he states, “except that the standard of living is higher here in the United States.” The motivated foreigner is uncertain about his future goals “I will apply to some American colleges, but I’m not sure whether or not 1 want to attenda university in Spain I will decide in the summer ” Although he speaks moderate English. Jesus welcomes conversation with a friendly face. He is more than willing to talk with people He doesn’t allow his foreign status at Masco to suppress his natural tendency to be open Jesus’ academic interests focus on math and science. He ' s currently studying American History, English 9. and Oral Communications, due to the mandatory requirement Calculus and Physics arc where his true in- terests lie Prior to amving in America, Damia made a choice in Spain, which sophomores arc required to make Instead of studying literature, Jesus decided to continue his studies in the sciences. MITOBO September 1984 - June 1988 Vol. 29 Then and Now... A chain of friends. It says it all. J. Epstein and M Goettel have the homecoming spirit Looking back at our years at Masco, many students will find it hard to believe that a good part of their last six years was spent here. Masco was a place where we went to school, but it was a lot more. In seventh grade, it was the ominous place where we thought we would get lost, never to return again. Soon, we discovered it was con- querable. As seventh graders, we were subjected to high schoolers ' taunting, mandatory chorus, and countless spirit days in which we were coaxed into painting our bodies red and white. There were the highlights to our first year here though, namely our numerous field trips. We journeyed to Bradley Palmer, Plum Island, and other hot spots in the area. But. the apogee occured in June of that year. We had Field Day. If one recalls, it rained. . .all day Playing tug of war just isn’t the same in the middle of a downpour. . . We entered the following fall as the big eighth graders on campus, pretty cool and confident. It was a typical year, no big events until . . . they came to town . The identi- cal Balogh triplets became the new obsession for the eighth grade girls. At the year’s end, there was the infa- mous big eighth grade formal in which we stood and watched Rob Portillo and Rob Bagarella breakdance for a good portion of the night. To end the year, we went to Canobie Lake Park where we went wild for the day. Our times in high school were memorable and there were too many to mention in such a short space. As fresh- men, we were told, “These are the best years of your life!” When we became the targets of Senior antics we questioned, Does this get better?” As sophomores, we were subjucted to the ultimate test, the ignorance fighter. A1 Brown. I don’t think we’ll ever recover from that verbal abuse, even if we might have learned something in the process. Those dances always produced a good turnout in which people would pack into the field house to rock the night away. There were other events that unified Masco- nomet such as those Saturday football games. Fellow Masconians would congregate to watch those dazzling athletes stun their opponents time and time again. For the more cultural side of us, there were always the theatrical productions to satisfy our needs. As juniors, we were prom bound, corsages in place and expectations running high. It was a memorable night that everyone remembers in some way, even if the highlight was the fruit salad. The summer break came and went. Then, FINALLY, we were seniors! Our time had come. Our parties, functions, and frolics, led by the “Dream Team” were a success. To think back to our years at Masconomet, the events are significant but most important is the fact that throughout the years we grew and matured not only in- dividually but collectively, as a class. The diversity of Masco which is represented in the Class of 1988 has come together as a unit and is working toward a common goal. Were these the best years or is the best yet to come? The future alone holds that answer. C. Keene pays no attention to what Rim has to say. We’ve got spirit, how about you? 10

There have been validictorians every year, that ' s nothing special But. if anyone knows Layne. they know he is not just your everyday student Layne is in three Advanced Placement classes, one of which in indepen- dent studs math At Masco, there is one calculus class which twenty students are in To be in this class is an achievement as a senior The amazing thing is. Lay ne took this class w hen he was a sophomore Math has always been easy for Layne He tied for fourth in a national math meet at Penn State Umver- sit He also placed seventh in a Massachusetts chemistry competition He is captain of the Math Team He has also received the Harvard Book Award tor academic excellence. All these achievements are impressive but to look at Layne you would not stereo-type him as a “brain”. Layne is part of the “Gators swim team, affiliated with Harvard Univer- sity He has won the most improved swimmer award three times and plans to swim competitively in college He also played water polo when he lived in Cincinnati, Ohio I like swimming because I can concentrate on i| and forget about everything else, Layne says Swimming occupies much time Layne swims every day-twice a day , four times a week He gets up four mornings a week at 4:30 to go into Boston to swim for two hours before going to school. Sometimes, Layne gets only three hours of sleep a night Yet he still maintains his high academic standards Layne is so brilliant you want to put him on a pedestal, but he’s so genuinely friendly, you can’t.” comments one student Sure. Layne is smart. But. if he was detached like some geniuses no one would care. It is his sense of humor and personality that makes him stand out. notes Mr. Meinelt, teacher of four years. Layne seems to take all of this in stride When asked about all the awards, Layne states. It used to embarass me but now I just accept it I guess I’m really lucky. It must be said. Layne’s success is a little more than luck Layne searches for a word he doesn’t know. he can’t find a single one A bundled Bracy. Layne, the outdoorsman. 12
