SENIORS 16 UNDERCLAS FACULTY STAFF 44 ACTIVITIES 4NI FALL AND WINTER SPORTS„.56 SPECIAL PIKj e EVENTS 90 ADVE ' Vi sm Co TABLE OF CONTENTS F DEDICATION THEME Many of us do not really know just what happ ens here at Masconomet during a typical day. Sure, everyone goes to classes from 7:50 to 2:23, and people have sports and games in the afternoon and evening, but just who and what makes our education here possible? This year, we decided to do something different with the dedication, to tie it in with our theme, which, as you ' ve probably already guessed, has something to do with doors. Instead of dedicating the yearbook to just one person, we are dedicating the 1986 MITOBO to all the people who have contributed to our lives and educations here, the people who have helped to ' open doors ' to our futures. Staff, faculty, counselors, parents, coaches, kitchen workers, advisors, custodians, they all have had an effect on us during our four years in high school. Most of these people work behind closed doors, and often we students fail to realize the importance of their jobs and do not tajly appreciate them. On the next few pages, we shall recognize the different facets of the Masconomet organization, although every single person Involved in Masconomet affairs cannot be personally thanked. The Class of 1986 realizes, however, that many people who previously have gone unnoticed deserve our undue thanks for all they have done for the class and the school as a whole. FACULTY STAFF Ask your average Masconomet student if they can name the people v ho run the school, they will probably answer, “Well, there ' s Dr. Carroll, Mr. Smith, Mr. Soucy ' and that will be about it. Most of us fail to realize the number of people who, here at school, control all that goes on from day to day. First of all, there is the School Committee, composed of thirteen members elected by town voters, that forms school policies from budget administration to student discipline to building development. These people represent the three towns of Middleton, Topsfield, and Boxford (MITOBO), and are probably the most important people in the school hierarchy but the least seen and least appreciated by the student body. Too many seniors have no idea of who the person is who hands them their diploma, who, by the way, is the School Committee Chairperson. Then, of course, there is Dr. Carroll, Mr. Dussault, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Soucy, who work here at the school, controlling the day to day affairs and making sure that everything goes smoothly. The individual teachers interact with students directly, from lecturing about the Constitution, to giving a pop quiz, to assigning homework, to writing recommendations, and are responsible for educating us. To get us through our senior year and into Harvard, there are the guidance counselors who also mend our schedules and get us started on career decisions. And to keep everyone organized, the numerous aides and secretaries spend hours typing, copying, and doing the little things that are important for things to get done during the school day. The custodians on both the day and night shifts keep the school looking good and clean and working properly, while the many monitors try to contain us in the halls and cafeterias and make sure we have our passes. All these people have responsibility towards the school and are necessary for making the whole high school tick. To them we owe our education, and they deserve our utmost appreciation. PARENTS Your parents, although you may not realize it, are a major part of the affairs and events in Masconomet, and even in your own life. From staying up worrying on prom night or giving a helping hand on projects or homework to being a member of the Parents ' Advisory Council, All-Sports Boosters, or Music Parents, they are concerned with you and what goes on at school. They willingly give up their precious time to be a part of the Masconomet community. In the Parents ' Advisory Council, parents can observe the education being offered here at Masconomet and offer ideas for ways to improve the system in order to make it more beneficial for us. Through the PAC, parents have a direct effect on our lives here. The Music Parents is another organization through which parents can participate in Masconomet ' s activities. Not only do they provide for Masconomet ' s excellent music program, but they offer scholarships to graduating seniors and let us enjoy grapefruit and oranges in the middle of winter. The All-Sports Boosters which promotes Masco ' s award-winning athletics and also provides scholarships to excellent athletes, is another group of parents which adds to Masconomet ' s lifestyle. Without these groups and the involvement of our parents, Masconomet would not be the excellent school it is today. Life at Masconomet is not totally njled by academics, and without the numerous coaches and advisors who give up their time for meager pay, the sports and clubs available to us would be non-existent. Through both winning and losing seasons, our coaches teach us valuable lessons in sportsmanship, give us tips on improving our athletic skills, and make us learn to work together as a group. We may wish that we could do without them while sweating through double sessions, running sprints up and down the basketball court, cringing during pxDst-game lectures, or gasping through mile number seven, but we owe all our success to them. In fact, Masco coaches last year led us to capturing the Lambert Trophy over all other Cape Ann League schools. Of course, there are also the advisors to classes and clubs who spend endless hours dreaming up fund raising schemes, getting people to meetings, and recruiting members to keep the organinzations together. From WBMT to Radio Masco, the Student Council to NHS, the Thespians to Peer Ed, they all offer us chances to supplement our educations, to learn how to lead, or to get Involved in school and student affairs. COACHES ADVISORS PLACES In addition to many of the people who work at Masconomet, many of us do not know what some of the rooms and secret passages around the school look like. Places like backstage, the administration building, the boiler rooms, the tunnels, and the spotlight catwalk are frequented only by a select few, most of us not knowing that they exist. WLASUK Custodian SPORTS Spence Smith and Chris Hudson celebrate after a The Chieftains once again dominated the Cape Ann League, and came out of the season unscathed, proudly Pearing a 17-0-0 record. The boys scored a record 120 goals during the season, led by Tom Crowley and Shawn Perkins, while giving up an average of less than one goal a game. Former tough schools posed no problem, os the team easily defeated Lynnfield, North Andover, and Rockport during the season. Ranked number one in Division II, the team defeated both Concord-Carl isle and North Andover in the playoffs, 4-1, and went on to defend their Division II title against Marblehead. Playing yet another great game, Masco won, 4-2, and it looked like they would go all the way. Late injuries, un- fortunately, took their toll on the team, as Shawn Perkins, Chris Hudson, and Matt Nicholas were all out of commission for the States against Rockland. Lack- ing their normal talent and speed in the backfield, Masco had trouble scoring and lost, 4-1. Mr. Emmons, Division II Coach of the Year, had this to say about the team: This was the finest high school soccer team I have ever coached. The players on the team were a close group who have played together for several years, and as a result we had the proper ' chemistry ' to be a championship team. The girls ' record speaks for itself: 1 2-0 in the Cape Ann League, 1 8-0-1 in the regular season. The four leading scorers in the league, Emily Brown, Liz Poor, Liz Brown, and Kendall Daly led the team to a tremendous 119 goals scored to a mere 1 0 against, thanks to great goalkeeping by junior Christine Butterworth. The team ripped up the Cape Ann League and easily captured the title behind superb coaching by Jim Murphy and a well developed group of devoted players. The highlight of the season came when they beat rival Andover, 4-0, under the lights at their home field. After being seeded number one in Division II North, the girls unfortunately fell to the infamous first-round jinx, losing a very tough game to Belmont, 1-0. Still, it was a very fulfilling year, and the seniors wish the best of luck to next years captains- Margie Tyndall, Mamie Saitta, and Christine Butterworth. John Misiano stretches out and contemplates Thanks to some strong coaching and a strong collection of runners, the boy ' s cross-country team posted one of their best records in five years, ending the season at 6-5. The addition of a couple juniors this year. Jay Nordstrom and John Misiano, provided depth for the team and helped to build Coach Sinnott ' s pack , led by Co-Captains Tom Gaudrault and Jeffrey Harris A ith junior Ned Kittridge. After a 3 -0 start, the team fell vicfim fo numerous league power- houses and if appeared fhat they were in store for another losing season. But with the return of Brad Johnson, another junior, and some inspiration from the coach, the runners bore down and won their final two meets against Triton and North Andover, getting five runners under the seventeen-minute mark for the first time in several seasons. The Bunnies had a harder time of it, but they again went undefeated for their seventh season in a row, ex- tending their acclaimed winning streak to 76 meets. Amy Legacki once again set a pace for the team and the league, crossing the finish line first in nine of the ten meets. The team coasted through the schedule until they met up with Triton in the next-to-last meet of the season. Triton was looking to spoil Masco ' s streak at number seventy-five, and they appeared to have done so when blue shirts were seen intermingled with Masco ' s top six runners in the final mile. Despite Amy finishing second, the Cheif- tains showed some determination and squeezed by them, 27-30. Sophomore Robyn Darling, already a good runner, came back this year even stronger and will be someone to watch in the next couple years. With the loss of only one senior, Jen Goodhue, it appears that the streak may last even another season with returning juniors Rory Evans, Jen Tinney, and Cheryl Bourque. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY FOOTBALL With the loss of head coach Guerra and a slew of senior players, Masco Football faced a very tough season this year. Jerry Bouvier stepped in and attempted to build it up, using the most he could out of his veterans, often playing them both on offense and defense. The players rose to the occasion, and did a good job making up for their small numbers by playing their hardest. Despite their efforts, the team struggled to a 1 -9 record. The one victory they did have was well deserved, as they beat Newburyport under the lights in overtime, 26-20. We will always remember Rob McArthur ' s long touchdown run, Tony Budd ' s bone-crushing sacks, and the final touchdown pass from Jerry Johnston to Dave Crimi in the overtime period that won the game. Oliver Gauthier ' s blistering speed, John Mackay ' s 6 ' 3 frame, and Pat Harvey ' s clutch place-kicking were other strong points of the season, but they weren ' t enough to overcome their opponents. The Cheiftans were also forced to play in all kinds of weather, from a hurricane during Homecoming to a blizzard on Thanksgiving Day. The experience they gained this year, however, along with a new weight training program, should help them next year and into the future. In the final game of the season, Masco faced first place North Andover and pulled out an exciting two point win behind Dave Crimi ' s clutch free throws. In the first game of States, Masco was an underdog, playing a very tall Wayland team, but suprised them with a swarming defense which caused numerous turnovers and an extremely loud group of fans. Masco then was matched with North Andover again, but this time we were the visiting team. In another game, the outcome went down to the final seconds when John MacKay broke free and layed in a shot as the buzzer sounded, stunning North Andover. These major activities allow for maximum involvement from the student body. One of the great things about Masco is that there are events for everyone to get involved in. These include: banging a hammer on a stage set, sit- ting on Santa ' s lap at the Christmas party, dressing up in any number of disguises for the Halloween party, performing a Broadway show stopper in the annual musical, building a float for Homecoming, etc. If a student wants to get involved there are certainly adequate opportunities. With this in mind let ' s open the door on EVENTS! EVENTS JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM The 1985 Junior-Senior Prom was held on May 11, 1985 at the Sheraton Rolling Green in Andover. Proms are always special occasions of which lasting memories are made and this year ' s Hold Me ' til the Morning Comes was no exception. Everyone looked radiant in their beautiful dresses and tuxedos. The music provided by WZOU ' s disk jockey, Steve York, was a perfect mix of slow and fast numbers and the meal was highlighted by a delicious Black Forest Cake. The moment the crowd was waiting for followed with the crowning of the King and Queen and the announcement of the Court for 1985! Kim McGillivray and Matt Nicholas, Colleen Carr and Scott Bartlett, Amy Snyder and Brian Saumsiegle, Beth Baldassarri and her mysterious Cape Codder and Reine Garrity and Jimmy Lukowski were in the court and Dave Crimi and Janet Holland were the Prom King and Queen. Shirley Vandebult and Daryl McKay did a fine job organizing the evening activities. P Csl O ' HOMECOMING 1985 This year ' s Homecoming was, well, different. Tradi- tion was broken when someone felt it would be a good idea to decorate the cafeterias instead of the halls, and the Seniors took first place once again. The long-awaited bonfire took place Friday night, with the ever-exciting speeches and effigy-throwings highlighting the evening. Floats were constructed the next day while athletes swept every game up to the football contest and parade. Masoonomet students joined their respective classes In the field house, dressed up for their themes, and showed their spirit. Rain began to fall as the floats were dragged by human force onto the track, and by the end of the procession they were ruined and had to be dis- mantled. The football game finally started, but soon the Cheiftains found themselves bogged down in the mud and drizzle. Halftime brought a torrential downpour, dispersing most fans, but the game did go on. A few hardy souls waited out the game, only to watch Masco Football ' s winning streak broken at one. The king and queen were announced that night at the dance, in of all places, the field house. Once Chris Hudson and Reine Garrity had their dance, most people left in search of other entertainment. Thus ended another Homecoming at Masconomet. HALLOWEEN BASH Instead of carousing the streets on Halloween night, most Seniors ended up at school, tricking and treating in their costumes. Scattered throughout the cafeteria were Jasons for every Friday the 13th movie, a dozen Rambos, some Miami Vice impersonators, and even a Tweety Bird. Stan Crawford and Denise Eschenbach each won Best Costume , while Liz and Emily Brown were the best couple as a Christmas Tree and present. Bobby Marquis, dressed as some type of savage that wielded a huge machete, easily won the prize for costume that best reflects persona- lity . Covered with strips of newspaper and wearing a hat, James Reid had the most original costume as Cousin It. When the party ended, everyone went home to do homework since, indeed, it was a school night. POWDER PUFF After three years of scoreless games in this annual classic, the ' 86 Seniors were determined to change this trend. After numerous Sunday practices with the Football captains, the girls were prepared to take on the Juniors, who also had held a few practices themselves. With a long list of plays in the book plus some secret ones up their sleeves, the Seniors obviously had the edge even before the game. The stands soon filled with anxious fans as the Juniors kicked off to the Seniors. Behind quarterback Nancy Cerullo, the Seniors marched down the field and scored on a fifteen-yard pass to Janet Holland. That was the end of the scoring, but the Juniors did threaten late in the game as they gained good field position as a result of Doreen Let Me At-Em Lukowski ' s fouls. It was a well fought game on both sides, but the 6-0 score proved the Seniors ' superiority this time. The annual Masconomet drama productions open doors for many students both oenter stsge and behind the soenes. They allow them the opportunity to showcase their multiple talents and skills. This year was no exoeption. The fall produotion of Best Laid Plans under the able direotion of Ms. Jean Jarvie thorough- ly entertained those who attended. The Distributive Education Class prepares its students for future jobs in retail business, marketing, or merchandising. Lessons in competition, inter- viewing, and management are valuable tools which give the students an extra edge as they enter the working world. A trip to Quincy Market this year exposed them to actual stores and businesses, an opportunity to see just what goes on to keep a store running. The students are also given a chance to use their skills first hand by selling candy in the DECA store. •E A. staffer saviour to the hungry masses! ROW 1-J MERRILL, L. HOPKINS, L. PICKARD, C. It helps them in dealing with both themselves and others around them by involving them in group discussions. It also gives them a chanoe to relax and be themselves during the sohool day. An individuals abilities and needs determine the amount of attention and work eaoh student receives. Field trips and group aotivities are held occasionally and are important in bringing the group together. iLri TRAINING CENTER Ihlen helps Johanna pick out a book. Kc Dussault working with Lisa. The Training Center offers an opportunity to developmentally delayed students to receive an education in a high school environment. This provides them a chance to interact with other students in addi- tion to using the school ' s facilities. The Training Center teaches the students skills which will eventually give them the opportunity to be independent productive adults. Functional academics and pre-vocational training is the focus of the work in the classroom, and field trips are held to practice their new skills. Since students do not attend regular classes, they do not get to know other students very well. This is where the volunteer program comes in-students from all classes come in and make friendships with the students, work- ing and learning with them. Volunteers are role models for the students, and make the whole program much more valuable for everybody. EARLY CHILDHOOD ime. Todd Rourke and Devin enjoying a spec Early Childhood Education is both o nursery for pre-school children and o high school course for juniors and seniors. The nursery is run by Mrs. Mannheim, and is open to 3-5 year old children from the tri-town area. Students who have signed up for the oourse work with the children during one period and also are taught by Mrs. Mannheim how to deal with young children, learn about their mental development, and develop leadership skills. They also learn to appreciate that caring for young children and making it a profession is a worthy life choice. It provides the students an opportunity to be creative, responsible, and to inter- act with young kids. An advanced program for seniors allows them to do independent field work at local nursery schools and kindergartens. 0 K II ly Erin, Timmy, and Erica making turkeys for Thanksgiving. Students report on various (ents and activities during the school year, in addition to the seasonal Masco sorts. Every week they must collect quotes, gather news, and write a well- ( iveloped article on specific topics, and then layout the pictures and stories to be f blished in the Tri-Town Transcript. Others provide pictures to supplement articles, tt everyone works together to produce the Chieftan Chronicle. Many journalists c j produced from the excellent program, with oontroversial opinions oocasionally ting brought to light. FRONT: Suey McLaughlin, Assistant Editor; Shirley Vandebult, Business Editor, BACK: Mr, Meinelt, Advisor; Glen Keene, Photo Editor; Jeffrey Harris, Editor in Chief; Kristin Denners, A Jitoi This year we decided to keep the yearbook simple, but classy. No box. No three different sections that are impos sible to jam inside the box. What we did do was spend more time giving attention to what was inside the book. We gave more coverage to the sports, events, and clubs so you are not left to figure out what they all did during the year. We also added captions to most pictures, so you will know who the people are ten years from now. One mistake we did make was to use the computer for the copy. Suey and Shirley spent endless hours typing away on them. Between both of us, we think our last deadline was the best since we had extra practice typing in the copy. The computer, for some unknown reason, erased our disk which stored 50 of our pages. A total Shamparoo. But we did have a wonderful time doing it all! Despite it all, we did have some fun, with our week out at Westfield, round-the- clock deadline parties at the McLaughlins, and numerous dumb jokes. Boy were they dumb. Mr, Meinelt kept us going through the deadlines and supplied us with creative ideas and captions. (what are twillersj? cn ' -j YEARBOOK STAFF Cl Every year the cost of publishing o quality yearbook continues to skyrocket. It would be hard to imagine a class leaving Masconomet without a new yearbook on the library shelves. In order to defray the cost we, annually, reach out to the business community for financial support in this undertaking. Without the support of local businesses we wouldn ' t exist. Therefore, we want to thank all of our advertisers as well as our Friends, Patrons, and Sponsors for opening not only their doors but their cash registers for the Class of 1986.
