Butch WBMT: MASCO’S RADIO STATION In 1976, Masconomet’s dream of hav- ing an educational radio station was be- ginning to take shape. The Federal Com- munications Commissions issued Masco frequency 88.3 FM which became WBMT. With a gift provided by Mr. William Coolidge of Topsfield construction was underway. Over the years, the station’s hours have varied. Whenever possible, the hours have been noon to 9 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. WBMT’s aim is to give high school kids an opportunity to work on a radio station. Having an output of 820 watts WBMT is ranked as one of the most powerful high school or college radio station in New En- gland. The broadcasts are heard through- out the Northshore. Every football and basketball game is broadcast with play by play anchor being announced by Sam Winslow. Each year brings improvement for the student-run station. New kids bring ideas and the WBMT staff members do not appear to have an end of talent and motivation. SUE MOORE 27
