Upon the school ' s opening in 1959 an entirely new concept was introduced for each of the three small towns — a regional high school, the combining of students from the three towns into one large school rather than small schools in Boxford, Topsfield and Middleton. Math teacher Donald Van Pelt, who came to Masconomet 24 years ago, remembers the tri-town integration as a tight situation. “We were instructed to never identify which town a student came from. The kids also made a great effort to avoid saying which town they were from. But that was in the beginning, now it is a matter of much lesser concern. MASCONOMET 4 During the fifties and sixties a dress code was in effect. This meant shirts and ties for the boys (if you didn ' t have a tie you were sent to the office to rent one or sit there for the day), and the girls had to wear dresses. Commenting on the dress code. Van Pelt said, The dress code gave a nice appearence for the kids and they felt better about themselves, but it was a financial burden for some and probably a bit much for a public school. Then the late sixties arrived, the era of Vietnam, protests, and ' doing your thing. ' At Masconomet the abolition of the dress code, the introduction of more freedom, and an entirely new outlook on education arose for both the students and the teachers. In the Sixties we became more concerned with the whole person, said Van Pelt, and that has carried on right through today. Liz Taylor Peg Wallen Bob Parker Gerry Plumley Jean Jarvre Ralph loPilato The original Masconomet family as they were referred to in the beginning opened their classrooms in September 1959 to the first students of a new regional high school — an innovative concept at the time. Brought together from all parts of the state, this original group set out to provide the best education to a generation of Tri-town youths. DEDICATION Jean Jarvie Ralph LoPilato Bob Parker Gerry Plumley Liz Taylor Peg Wallen Through their efforts and the efforts of all the other dedicated Masconomet faculty and staff, me school has grown to be respected as one of the best public schools in the state. As Masco enters its second quarter century with another innovative educational concept imminent, we dedicate the Twenty-fifth Anniversary edition of MITOBO to the Silver Anniversary faculty and staff with a sincere appreciation for all they have contributed to make Masconomet what it is today. Thursday — Hall Decorating. The Seniors wimp out. The secretaries in the office say: The Senior officers showed a real lack of enthusiam and leadership, and just didn ' t want to have fun. The Sophomores take first prize. HOMECOMING ■■ Friday — The Big Bonfire. Greg Whitehead gives an inspirational speech. The crowd anxiously awaits the announcement of the Homecoming Court. Later, each class gathers at their float decorating location to add the final touches for Saturday ' s parade. Saturday — An exciting day! An early breakfast of light and fluffy pancakes followed by a great day for Masco sports fans. A sweep of all games by Masco ' s Varsity teams. Then the Homecoming Parade. Awards: Mark and Shauna get Homecoming King and Queen. The Juniors win the float but the Sophomores get the ' Spirit Award ' for rebuilding their trashed float Saturday morning. Then the football game. Masco rolls over Ipswich. The score: 21-20. That night, the Homecoming Dance. Apparently, everyone stayed home. HOMECOMING The 1983 Junior-Senior Prom was undoubtedly a highpoint in many of this year ' s Seniors ' lives. And what a night it was! The Prom was held at luxorious Jimmy ' s Allenhurst and the enchanting music of “The Catalinas provided the perfect background for a memorable evening. Certainly, Jennifer Winick stole the show, as both Class President and Prom Queen, and the high point of the evening came when she got the first dance with Prom King Rudy Schwab. But that wasn ' t all! A delicious meal featuring the Allenhurst Salad ' ' and much more (see your Prom ' 83 booklet for details) and a complimentary piece of Prom glassware for anyone who cared to pick it up the next week. There ' s no question about it, it certainly was a Wonderful Tonight. PROM ' 83 Our first function as seniors was the exciting Halloween Party. Everyone showed up, trying to impress the judges with their creative costumes. Among the prize winners were Sarah Webber for most original costume, a pina colada complete with a built in Dolby stereo; Anne Bogart, Kim Moore, Carol Cerullo, and Lynn Crippen as Pygmies for best group costume and Jeff Holland and Maria Mercandante as Popeye and Olive Oyle for cutest couple, (though they barely beat Max Turner and his blushing bride Mike Gill) Billy Steen won costume that best reveals true personality and Alan Wilcox got Best Costume as a clown. HALLOWEEN PARTY Masco Football had an unbelievably successful year in 83! Great coaching from Coach Guerra and Coach Bouvier led the 1983 Varsity Team to a 8 win and 2 loss season ... the best showing in ten years. The four year veterans leave with a lot of pride and a profound sense of accomplishment for the successful rebuilding of their team. Heads up Cape Ann League! Masco ' s team will be heading for a Super Bowl slot next year and a 10-0 season. FOOTBALL M. Morrissey B. Ryan P. St. Pierre T Evans C. Orth C. Theodorou R. Ujhely J. Carney Row 3 J. Otero L. The high point of the season came with a 2-1 victory at North Andover, clinching the C.A.L. title. The team finished the season ranked first in Division 2 North, and scored an impressive victory in its first game of States against Bedford. CHRISTMAS PARTY Charles Dickens made his mark on Masconomet ' s theatrical community as his classic novel of “David Copperfield converted the stage into a flurry a 19th century life. The part of David Copperfield (Kevin(The Jerk) O ' Leary) was extremely well played as David experienced the traumatic life of an orphan seeking an education at the Wickfield Law Firm. The plot concerns the events that happen as the sinister Uriah Heep (Alec (The Beam) Gilman) tries to rob Mr. Wickfield, a soggy drunk, (Dan Mueller) of his companies funds. The end comes with the banishment of evil Uriah Heep and a happy ending for the rest. “David Cooperfield was a wild success thanks to the fine performances by everyone in the cast. DAVID COPPERFIELD On April 12, 1983 a group of Masconomet French students arrived at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. It took a while to get used to things — like how to ask where to find the bathroom, how to dim the ardor of European men and how to politely state that no you don ' t care for horse meat tonight — merci en tout cas. We all agreed that the pastries were great though as were our French families that helped us through it all — especially crossing the streets of Paris where pedestrians don ' t have the right of way. It was definately a trip to remember! Vive la France! After taking final exams early, a group of Masconomet German students took off for Saarbrucken, the bridged city of Germany. After a final prep session by Miss Skudra on how to greet their new families, the students were ready to see Germany. After taking in the typical tourist spots — the opera, a porcelain factory, and a brewery the students ventured to some not-so-typical spots. They frequented a local pub and McDonalds, the only restuarant with recognizable food. Masco students left their mark on Saarbruken with a dazzling production, An American Evening , highlighted by the well received Typish Deutsch skit. FOREIGN EXCHANGE We were so psyched this year ' cause all our guys did so excellent! It was always hard work, but we gave 110% and cheered from the opening minutes right through the victory parties after. We did this wicked awesome mount for competition. We were all so embarassed when Mary ' s nylons ripped. We were sorry to have to kick Jill off halfway through the season — but she just WOULD NOT clean her shoe laces. As one fan said, The girls really generated enthusiasm in the fans this year. Vanity Basketball Row 1 B. Baldesarri J. Jarvis K. Miller L. Booye S. Olmstead K. Rei Row 2 A. Brickett P. Shielding S. Nordstrom After an opening season win the Boys Basketball Team had a disappointing four game losing streak which seemed to virtually eliminate their chances for a playoff spot. But thanks to Coach Casey and a strong, talented team, they pulled off a miraculous thirteen game winning streak, beginning with an exciting one point victory over first place North Andover. According to Senior Captain Chris Madaus, “At this point we were as good or better than any team in the league.” Unfortunately, Masco lost to a very hot Marblehead team in the states, despite great performances by center Steve Milks and C.A.L. player of the year Marshall Tait. BOYS ' BASKETBALL 3 Though this year ' s Girls Basketball Team admittedly had a bad season, their 3-17 record doesn ' t tell the whole story. After losing two of their top players, the team went into season young and inexperienced, and just couldn ' t seem to win games when they had to. What the team did have was a lot of spirit and fun, as well as managing to give some strong teams like Concord-Carlisle a good fight. With hard work, next year ' s team should be a winner. 40 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Junior vanity Row 1 M. Mosier L. Brown K. Shinn Row 2 S. McLaughlin M. Maccarone S, Vandebult K. Narath R. Sauchuck. Kevin Smith also got off to a fast start but was hampered by a pulled muscle. The season ' s high point came at a meet against North Reading, where a short-handed Masco team won the meet with a victory in the mile relay, the last event of the day. Through hard work, great goaltending, and opportunistic goal scoring, the team went from 4-13-1 last year to 12-6-1 this year, missing the state tournament by only one point. None of this would have been possible without our coach Bob Driscoll, who was voted Cape Ann League Coach of the Year. We surprised many people, including ourselves, and regained the respect that Masconomet Hockey once had. High points of the season included beating Lynnfield twice and scoring three goals in two and a half minutes to beat Hamilton-Wenham, keeping our tourney drive alive. The low was definitely the open net goal by North Andover that ended our state tournament hopes. The Seniors would like to wish next years team the best of luck. HOCKEY Varsity Row 1 D. Anderson D. Gilbert, Coach THE TRAINING CENTER The Training Center provides education and training to a variety ot developmental delayed students. These students would otherwise attend school in segregated settings and be unable to take advantage of the many benefits available in a high school environment. The purpose of the Training Center is to teach developmentally delayed students to fulfill their potential to be independent, productive adults. Our in-class work focuses on functional academics and pre-vocational training. We take frequent field trips to practice skills aquired in the classroom. We use various school facilities; the gym, cafeteria, and home economics room. Despite this, we are still basically a self contained class. The Training Center students are not mainstreamed; they do not go to math and history classes. This limits their opportunities to interact with other students. The student volunteer program has been going on in the Training Center since its beginning seven years ago. It gives high school students an opportunity to work with Training Center students as individuals rather than as a group of people who are different. The volunteer experience is mutually beneficial. Students in the Training Center gain a variety of positive role models and are helped to learn. But the most valuable aspects is the friendships they develop with volunteers. The volunteers help make the Training Center the quality program that it is. They should all be commended for the invaluable assistance they have given us in the Training Center. J. Most companies should use the phone more to make sales appointments or decrease accounts receivables. But how can telephone marketing help your sales force produce more profitable business? Reduce the cost of handling low volume accounts? Stimulate sales from catalogs or direct mail ? What are realistic goals, effective strat- egies, and acceptable costs? Should telephone marketing be done in-house, outside or both? Our professional communicators make thousands of high-quality, low-cost phone calls from our office for major corporations, or we’ll set up an on premise telephone marketing unit when justified. We can probably do the same for your company. At the very least, we can answer your questions. Call (617) 479-1912.
