Many of us first met Mr. Brown when we were in the ninth grade. He was our Western Civilization teacher. At times, his overbearing personality and dynamic teaching style scared us. His workload was heavy and he required us to think. When he told us someday we would affectionately refer to him as Uncle Al, we laughed at him. During our sophomore year, Mr. Brown taught many of us European history. Though some were still wary of his history- related jokes and jabs, many members of the class realized what a fine teacher and dear friend Mr. Brown was. Throughout our senior year, he has remained a friend of the Class of 1 983. He has been generous in giving advice on assorted adolescent dilemmas; writing papers, selecting colleges, and staying sane until graduation. Mr. Brown has a unique approach to teaching. Rather than parrot information to his students, he encourages them to come up with the answers and to express themselves intel- ligently. The questions he raises are comparable to those asked of college students. Mr. Brown refuses to settle for mediocrity from his students and from himself. He demands the best that each student has to offer; a request that is often met with frustration, anxiety, and anger. In the end the work is done and is done extremely well; a compliment to his ability as a teacher. COUP ' j ti i n ' jp-j,. F6e DQfrY |Hp l${ZXo,v [W lM o ' etaO p One of Mr. Brown ' s favorite assignments (b esides the 100 page World War I paper) was the historical reference notebook; a collection of names, phrases, and quotes relating to history and politics from Bucephalus, Alexander the Great ' s horse, to Bresh- nev. The notebooks were kept throughout our sophomore year and were the catalyst of such great events as the Coup d’Etat Monster Banquet. The feast was a salute to Napoleon and Mr. Brown. The menu consisted of the Frankfurt Assembly, reminis- cent of the Second German Empire; Marie Antoinette’s own Let Them Eat Cake Cake; the Tartar Yoke (Yolk); phalanxes of fudge; and Bismark’s Blood and Iron Punch, rather than Napo- leon brandy! For the past four years. Masconomet has been our home. Daily, we came to school, but we did more than just go to classes. Saturday football, soccer games, dances, field trips, and Frolics drew us together. We will remember our friends, but we should not forget where it all began — the corriaors and classrooms of Mas- conomet. 6 7 Masco name addres P hone . This year it is chock full of practical information that every camper should know. Since it is our desire to have everyone well versed on our activities, philosophies, and goals, here at Camp Masco, we have made sure every possible question has been answered. Remember, this is your camp! Please feel free to use this handbook to keep up to date on the many facets that make Camp Masco what it is. Most sincerely, Stephen C. Smith Camp Director everything you always wanted to know about camp masco but were afraid to ask DEMERITS The demerit system at Camp Masco is as follows: 5 demerits — failure to report poison ivy outbreak 5 demerits — cheating on survival skills 10 demerits — canoeing in out of bounds areas 15 demerits — leaving campus with- out permission An accumulation of more than 30 de- merits will result in a camper-director conference and a short sheeting of the aforementioned camper ' s bed. BEHAVIOR AT WIENER ROASTS Campers attending such wiener roasts will be expected to obey the following rules: 1 . Campers will be expected to report to fireside areas promptly at 6:00. 2. If a camper leaves the designated areas early, they will not be allowed to return. 3. Burning mor e than three (3) wein- ers past the edible stage in one sitting will result in loss of privileges for toasted marshmellows and last choice in fireside songs. CAMP MASCO JINGLE We have provided the lyrics to one of our all-time favorite fireside songs (sung to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey”) If you go to Camp Masco, You learn how to camp. You make leather wallets, and the cabins are damp. We always have fun here, the counselors are great. Class is exciting, it’s choice. 14 FIREDRILL PROCEDURE Should a campfire get out of control, the fol- lowing procedure should be observed. 1. The first person to notice the fire should sound a general alarm. 2. DON’T PANIC!! 3. Form a bucket brigade. Remember Campers — In emergency situa- tions ALWAYS USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! GRADES AND THEIR MEANING At the end of each quarter, each camper will receive a report card. We have provided a list of grades and their meaning. A — Excellent camper B — Good camping skills C — Joe average camper D — Barely able to survive in wilderness F — Sorry, Charlie Industry grades are as follows: 1 — Very industrious 2 — C ' mon, you can try harder than that 3 — In need of remedial scouting 4 — Heck, just give up Attitude and Behavior grades: 1 — It ' s campers like you that make us proud 2 — You ' re on the right track 3 — Shape up or ship out 4 — Have you considered reform school? THE MESS HALL Camp Masco ' s cuisine is a rare combination of exotic treats and pure disgust (our apologies to Robyn’s mom). Tater tots, tacos, mystery meat with gravy? And what was that pink fluff pie that seemed to whet all the appetites of these poor captive campers?! For those who dared to return this year there were few changes — pepperoni was added to the pizza. 15 16 h? 18 pA - r SECRETARIES ROW 1; J. Emerson, E. Krom, J. Minemier, M. Wallen, E. Booye, C.
