And so, become yourselves Because the past is just a good-by. Teach your children well Their father’s hell did slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams Tire ones they picked, the ones you’ll know by. Chorus: Don’t you ever ask them why If they told you, you would cry. So just look at them and sigh, And know they love you. And you, of tender years, Can’t know the fears That your elders grew by And so, please help them with your youth They seek the truth, before they can die. Teach your parents well, their children’s hell Will slowly go by, and feed them on your dreams The ones they picked, the ones you’ll know by. 3 2126 00143 353 6 A member of a Tri-Town family working as a missionary in Africa shines a new light upon our traditional yearbook title. Mitobo in a modern African dialect means the solving of the mystery . That mystery we are faced with is the timeless mystery of mankind. The solution already exists. When correctly joined, the puzzle ring’s many separate parts be- come a single band. Like that ring, we are one; all of us together. In the process of becoming, we have to find how we fit to the main and how we remain ourselves. 0 s Looking Back The Tri-Town region is rich in reminders of the past. The hardships of settling, the quest for expression of re- ligious beliefs, and local government have all been fac- tors in the development of this area. It is with this past in mind that we are now molding our future. Middleton, once part of Salem Village, prospered in the colonial years as an industrial town. Its name was derived from its location — the middle town” between Salem Village and Topsfield. As well as farming, Middle- ton hosted industries such as a box factory, soap factory, and grist and lumber mills. The settlers, intending a last- ing village, built beautiful homes — many of which are still standing. Topsfield was originally called Shenewemedy” after a local tribe. It was renamed New Meadows,” and finally became Topsfield after Toppesfield, England. Although it had been a quiet town, a few stirring events occurred. For instance, there is the tale about Parson Capen’s slave who was said to have seen the devil. Also, during the Salem witch trials, two Tops- field women were convicted and hung for the charge of witchcraft. Today, both the old and the new are living side by side, as in the center of the town. Boxford, a small agricultural town named after the same town in Berkshire, England, consisted of about twenty farms and paid a yearly fee to the Rowley select- men for separation from that village. Boxford broke from the Topsfield church in 1702. The ordination of Reverend Symms on December 30, 1702, made the vil- lage a legally corporated town with a population of less than thirty. 2 uOTAGIANT OAK NEAR tub JtaMSlWWDOlBW HE3 ITS FIRST TOWN MEETING AND IgCflVFD (IS CHARTER FROM THEPROWNCf ' MASSACHUSETTS 8AV V j S t. For the past two years, his enthusi- asm, optimism, and great sense of humor have helped us make it, and have shown him to be not only an outstanding teacher, but a warm and thoughtful person whom we all have grown to love and respect. In deep admiration and appreci- ation we dedicate the 1972 MITOBO to Mr. Charles Hodsdon. CREATIVE ARTS In the past, MITOBO has limited its display of the creative talents to ink sketches and literature. We would like to expand this presentation to include other forms of the creative arts. r T r iry- ' 1 JB TPB flSPT 1 IUI u. w p vs f. ■ ' W P? x In the field of music, songs are being written, tested, and rewritten by various students interested in develop- ing their musical abilities. Sell-out crowds have been drawn to see Masconomet’s dramatic productions. This year, Mrs. Ansteensen helped with the choreography in Half a Sixpence. Photography is another dimension in the creative world; it takes imagination and knowledge to achieve the desired effect. Interest in sculpture has reached new heights with the use of various materials, such as clay, snow, bottles, and papier mache. The school has the resources and materials needed for a recognizable structure, but it is only through the students that these materials can be created into a work of art. Find your brotherhood, receive it with open arms. Keep his secrets well, hospitable, neighborly. Just know who your neighbor is. S. Crowe Reflections on a Friend I sit here thinking of the pain you feel As having lost the life of one who was Your friend. I too, am filled with pain because My love for you permits my mind to steal Your grief, in hopes that I might somehow heal Some of the wounds which death has cruelly caused. Your sorrows must confuse you so, because Your mind must question how this can be real. There cannot be a greater loss than true And lasting friendship. Even so, you must Continue with your life; remembering Your friend as he would surely want you to. Above all else, you cannot lose your trust. Death is merely but a part of living. D. Small People are very exciting toys! We’re very good, mechanical wise. We’re very good, scientific wise. We’re very good, on the outside wise. But, look inside, all that steel. J. Giolito L. It means forgiveness And love that never dies. It means joy that glows. It means forgiveness. It means happiness. It means joy that glows. It means life and f ulfillment. ! It means happiness. Masconomet used many juniors in the new two platoon system engineered by head coach Roberts. As expected, the inexperience showed, but with only 9 seniors graduating, we look for next year’s team to be one of the best. The J.V. Team practicing with the Varsity squad, ended with a record of 4-3 this year. GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ TENNIS The Girls’ Tennis Team had a great year with a record of 10-2. It also won the Cape Ann League Championship. This season should be another good one, since only one teammate graduated. Masconomet’s Boys’ Tennis Team also had a good season with a record of 13-3. They made it into the semi-finals of the State Tournament only to be de- feated by Chelmsford. Unfortunately, most of last year’s team graduated, leaving a difficult goal for this year’s team. ROW I: J. Hill, S. Phillips, S. Dosh, C. Bryant, G. Cox; ROW II: S. Hermans, R. Moore, T. Mailey, C. Betts, M. Abbott, J. Hutchins, Coach Jervah. TRACK Masco’s Track Team has always been fantastic and this year was no exception. By winning 8 meets and losing 1, the team captured the Cape Ann League Meet Championship again. With ten strong seniors coming along next year and top notch underclassmen, there seems hardly a threat to their title. ROW I: E. Helve, B. Bates, J. Relick, J. Ludwig, D. Roy, D. Bergsten, B. VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY AND FRESHMAN BASEBALL The Varsity Baseball Team put in a great sea- son with 13 big wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie due to darkness. Not only were they the Cape Ann League Champions, but also went all the way to the semi-finals of the State Tournament before losing to Amesbury. The coming year should prove to be equally exciting. Although the Junior Varsity Baseball squad won 4 and lost 8 games this year, Coach Sauchuk is very optimistic that next year his team will improve, seeing as the freshman players came off with a 7-3 winning season. This year’s Golf Team had 4 wins and 8 losses and with a year’s experi- ence, they intend to do much better. According to Coach Dodge, We are try- ing to build a golf tradition at Masconomet and, as our team gains experience, we’re sure this will happen.” ROW I: R Blaisdell, P Scheurer, A. Poretsky, R.
