He has alu ' ays been there to help when w r e needed advice, be it in regard to Frolics, Senior Privileges, the treasury, or Santa Claus. Many have known him as Uncle Duck or Ducky Doliber — a good natured, easygoing individual. In deep appreciation we dedicate the 1971 MITOBO to Mr. Donald A. Here I am, Looking forward Toward a future, Which, with its new beginnings Brings a sense of awe And a new awareness. Here I am, Seventeen years old, Caught up in the middle, Clinging to the past and its security, Yet reaching out to the future, Realizing that it’s time to break away And to stand on my own. L. Spakowski 10 One queries: What is our problem: the problem? Where does it hide? (Or does it?) Maybe we know where it is But shroud it — Fearing it will be uncovered. I said a problem. This problem we mask: What is it? We take so much pain to hide it That We forget: It is IDENTITY See it? Remember it. Keep it. Use it. Without it: What am I? What are you? It has been shunned: Within ourselves . . . . . . not a system FIND IT! Don’t be ashamed Discover yourself Be yourself Don’t be timid Don’t perform Live your life . . . . . . Your Way! J.B. Rendle We Face the Sun We face the sun, our backs to yesterday — We are today, we’ll be tomorrow, Though sometimes scorned, we’ll stand up straight, And fight with truth instead of stones. We once were rivers, now we’re the ocean. Our ways unsure, but goals are set. Our minds are deep, conscience clear, Humanity will prevail, through tomorrow But tomorrow’s infinity, it’s never reached, never dies. So there is time, for us to live, To show the world: We’re headed right.” Today we lead, but not forever. We know someday, we’ll step aside. When new waters overflow our ocean, We become the Rivers to tomorrow. But tomorrow’s infinity, It’s never reached, Never dies. Martha Dunphy 11 A miniature stone Seen with brothers as a beach In itself, a world. Dana Jones Lonliness seeps in, like rain through a crack in the roof Until you are nothing, nothing better than a flower in the snow. Susan Shipley Stages Dawn — I marveled at the sunrise, The radiating warmth touched me And I gazed upon a glistening world — I had only begun to see. I wanted to question, but knew not how to ask. Noon — I did not believe the sun was overhead. My shadow disappeared, and I stood alone. Through the clouds — one ray of light shone brightly. I found a door, but had no key. I questioned, but did not hear the answer. Dusk — I take it for granted that the sky is glorious — Awash with the hues of the setting sun, A masquerade that camouflages the landscape. I am beginning to see. I can answer, but no one asks the question. Evening — The sun wall disappear slowly, Taking with it the vital flame Which radiates warmth to all; Leaving no trace — it is forgotten. CORLISS MITCHELL The rain will fall like tears The sun shall use through the years. Who owes to the life that dies? Only love to the new born’s sigh At this time to whom do I Perhaps to all of mankind With this light, and the new born ' s life. Shall we cease to go on? Rain to turn to ice Sun to turn to night The life we hold is not our own. 47 WALTER MAYHEW MEINELT I should ask that nature ' s gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so in- destructible that it would last throughout life. Simmons Jeffrey Skinner Barry Ware 62 IN MINKOmAJSA Summer 1968. It was a bright summer — everyone just out of school and looking ahead to bright days. The summer of 1968 was not a bright one because we of the class of 1971 suffered a tragic loss — the loss of Bruce E. Porter. At Masconomet Bruce was an honor student, played end in football, was the play- maker in basketball, ran hurdles in track, and somehow found time to play the clarinet in the b and. Outside of school Bruce was just as active. He played both knothole and Pony League baseball and was a member of the Huntsmen Band of Wenham. Boy Scouting epitomizes the type of guy that Bruce was. He received the God and Country Award, was a member of Explorer Post No. 81, the Order of the Arrow and was an Eagle Scout. Bruce’s activities in his church, the Congregational Church of Topsfield, characterize his deep involvement and concern for others. Bruce’s personality was truly dynamic. With the guys he would joke, laugh and have the best of times. It seemed that every girl, to the envy of all the boys, had a crush on him at one time or another. He was the friendliest type of kid. He would give of himself for a friend and his friendships were sincere and many. Bruce was one genuine guy and we miss him. 64 eS? £3 2? £iy£0 class MnroRy SEPTEMBER 10, 1970 School Opened SEPTEMBER 19, 1970 Yearbook Ad Drive SEPTEMBER 22, 1970 First Field Hockey game — against Beverly SEPTEMBER 22, 1970 Cross Country — against Pentucket SEPTEMBER 26, 1970 First Football game — at Lynn Trade NOVEMBER 5, 1970 Last Field Hockey game — against Manchester NOVEMBER 6 7, 1970 Play — The Ivory Door” by A. BASKETBALL Coach Sauchuk: Fundamentals win games,” The Masconomet J.V. Basketball Team posted a league mark of thirteen wins and three losses enabling them to capture first place in the Cape Ann League. Good shooting was one of the strengths of the team with Dave Church leading the team with over two hundred points. Alter- nating between J.V. and Varsity were Dick Bal- entine and Rick Butler who, besides adding scor- ing punch, brought additional strength under the boards to the team. Handling the big job at cen- ter were sophomore Todd Mayo and junior Bob Campbell. Rounding out the starting team were Mark McMenimen, an all-around good basketball player, and Steve Small, who quarterbacked the offensive attack. They were led by tri-captains Jeff MacGill, who was the team’s starting goal- tender, Chip Ackerman, who piloted the defense, and John Small, who led the scoring attack with his fine playmaking and shooting. After their first two losses, Masco went on to win or tie their next ten games with help from seniors Dan McCraine, who was superior on the line, and Steve Cox, who was considered one of the best defensive players in the league. Much consideration and thanks should go to Coach Dave Balser who, in his first year of coaching, did a great job. VARSITY ANDOVER 2 WILMINGTON 1 Essex Aggies I ST. Vaulting was our strongest event this year with two of the girls, Laurie Fraser and Jane Woodbridge, qualifying for the State Meet. The team, captained by Laurie Fraser, exhibited team spirit and always managed to perform their very” best although they were continually faced with tough competition. Jan Wey- land, Pat Lindh, Cindy Martin, and Peggy Ackerman were the other start- ing players. Jan’s and Pat’s set shots with Cindy’s jump shot combined in the final team scores. Center Peg Ack- erman demonstrated outstanding de- fensive playing by controlling the boards. Other girls on the team were Kathy Russell, Emily Schroeder, Nancy Anderson, Leslie Harrison, and Pat Hey. These girls should be commended for their efforts, their spirit, their en- thusiasm, and their determination. The future looks bright for the team as there is a strong nucleus of players returning for next year. GIRLS’ J.V. BASKETBALL Coach Talbot: Look where you are passing the ball.” This year’s Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball team played an exciting season with many ups and downs. Even though our record was only 4-7, we always managed to put up a good fight. Although we had a few disap- pointments when we lost by only a point or two, we chalked it up to ex- perience and hoped to do better the next time.
