■V 3 2126 00143 338 7 • • • • • Dedication Aside from devotion to his classes and making Physics phun, Mr. Morse has spent headaches of time and effort back -stage, engineer- ing the lighting and sets that have polished the Masconomet produc- tions for two years. A man of restless energy and witty personality, he has benefited and entertained us all. In cheerful gratitude we dedicate the 1970 MITOBO to Mr. Robert A. Morse. 2 T me IF CMB0V KJ9GHTJ0M . furmicmu milLYY . urt ♦ i rmrm. 9 mm i immmMSN . tmtrm cl m mm ament nr . . . iHMiMS .... 2 i 2 21 ZT n Ui m etc Advisor -- Mrs. Barbara Lawson Art Advisor -- Mrs. Jane Ritchie Editor-in-Chief -- Andrew Shepard Art and Layout Editor -- John G. Wounded skies bleed smog Obscuring vision and conscience. Death ' s black barrels aim skyward. And so it persists . i ' m afraid. Sonnet Nancy Clark If in your life you ' d found you ' d done the best, No doubt, they said, you ' d done the very most, Perhaps you ' d find it easier to coast, And let past honors buoy you as you rest. But as all others you will face more test Against the bragging claims of each new boast. If you should lose, your past is but a ghost, Tossed pale and weak beneath the current crest. So churches rise to nearer meet the sky, Succeeding spires each shadowing the last. The marksman aims to shoot hawks as they fly, The runner strides to pace each race as fast. To sight, confront, to dare, compete, to try As ever better, so the mold is cast. hope by Sally Cargill Hope for that happening even if it rains a small bit of rain will revive us no matter. Please let it happen . . . still if we swing and listen the ties may break The trees are growing overhead. moffat ' s skiff by Andrew Shepard In Moffat ' s field, above the tide, A stillness in the swaying grass, Betrayed a place the old man tried To hide his skiff ’til winter passed. ’Twas overturned in Moffat ' s field, All matted with a pungent slime, That carried on a dying breeze. It clung there since last summertime. The ancient wood was weathered gray -- Or painted with a lay ' r that grew To just what thickness who could say? And which was stronger of the two? The pine is soft and paint flakes off And which is stronger of the two? I Diane Bryant A distant wave approached the rocky shore And, capped in white, it made its way between The ledges, climbing in a ridge of green With setting sunlight dancing in its crown. Since early dawn the breaking seas have thrown Themselves against the granite ' s polished sheen And left some mark to show how they have been Through violent storms --to crash upon the shore. It curled before the beach and thundered in With spindrift flying like a pennant from Its crest, and opalescent foaming surf Exploding, falling . . . quiet in the end. We live with rising prices and crime, Viet Nam, war in the Middle East, racial tension, revolution on the campuses, cities in crisis, and all the other front page cliches. Between grief and nothing, I will take grief. William Faulkner We live with men on the moon, organ transplants, deescalation of the war, technology that rescued Ramses from the rising Nile, a ban on Nuclear Testing, and one would like to believe that the stars promise a new and enlightened age. Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. I wonder. I don ' t know where the world will be, where the indi- vidual members or the class will be, or even where I will be. Radio Club Woofers and Tweeters Leaders Club Majorettes Moratorium Masconomet gathered around the flagpole to observe the October fifteenth National Moratorium Day, organized locally by sophomore Jamie Stewart. Activities of the day included candlelight marches from the centers of the three towns, to a rally at Masconomet, speeches from students and faculty, and the continuous reading of the names of the 40, 000 American Vietnam war dead. Various political philosophies were voiced, some thoughtful, others emo- tional, and by the end of the day, one could derive many meanings -- either from the running to lunch by some underclassmen in the midst of the speeches, or from the students who arrived at 6 A.M. to start the reading of the names . mamma Solid Gold Cadillac On the evenings of November 7 and 8, the Henry F. Long auditorium thundered with the applause from a full-house turnout to watch Teichmann and Hart ' s comedy The Solid Gold Cadillac. Under the direction of Miss Jean Jarvie, this year ' s production was once again a smash hit. As the curtain rose, the narrator explained: This is a fairy story --the story of Cinderella and the Four Ugly Corporation Directors. Jane Wilcox was delightful as Mrs. Laura Partridge -- a crusading stockholder who conquered the world of big business. Clyde Irwin dynamically portrayed T. John Blessington -- president of General Products Corporation of America. The success is again owed to scores of people: the cast, stage crew, costume and make-up committees, the business staff, and the publicity staff to name a few. We would especially like to thank Miss Jarvie and Mr. Robert Morse -- Technical Advisor — for their many hours of hard work. The annual Powder Puff game held on November 25 between junior and senior girls got off to a roaring start when an- nouncers Chip Sutton and Dave Williams introduced the Twelfth Street Terrors (Us) with coach Kim Breed, and Fat Albert ' s Chicks (Them) with coaches Fritz Connors and Chuck Sawyer. The Twelfth Street Terrors rushed on to stomp over the juniors with a 20-0 victory, supported by cheerleaders Vern Harrington, Pete Cronkhite, Flip Roland, Charlie Webber, and Vic Noll. Scoring points for the Senior Terrors were Terrible Terry Evans, Dashing Cully D ' Agostino, and Leaping Louanne Blackburn. Powder Puff On March 13 and 14 the musical production KISS ME KATE amused three audiences in the Henry F. Long Auditorium with vibrant Shakespearean costuming, life-like sets, and Cole Porter ' s immortal humor. The lively performance brought a standing ovation from an appreciative audience. KISS ME KATE, a colorful comparison of an acting troupe and their production of Shakespeare ' s THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, featured the unbelievable talents of Clyde Irwin, and Jane Wilcox in the title role . Miss Jean Jarvie is commended for a truly great stage presentation, as is Mr. Robert Morse and Mr. Wayne Killian for their indispensable contributions. ■ i VARSITY AND J. V. FOOTBALL: FRONT: V. In addition to cheering at all home and away games, the cheerleaders, led by captain Marcia Holt and co-captain, Chris Schumacher, decorated the boys ' locker room before each game, baked goodies for the team, sold fudge in order to buy new uniforms, and entered cheering competitions in western Massachusetts. The 1969-70 Junior Varsity Hockey Team was almost entirely made up of freshmen, with only five sophomores on the team. After a rough start against larger and older opponents, the team came back strong in the second half of the season to finish with a near-even record. Jim Bishop and Roger Wildes were outstanding in the goal. Dave Taylor, Buddy-Taft, and Eric Wirth backboned the defense, while Pete Minich, Jeff Scutiere, Mark Panella, John Carpenter, and Jeff Thrasher provided the offensive power. Mark Panella and Dave Taylor led the team in scoring. ROW 1: S. Blais, S. Crawford, C. D ' Agostino, D. Froburg; ROW 2: S. Caples, S. Helve, A. Begin, C. Anderson; ROW 3: MissFinnigan (adv. ), A. Scully, J. Beuchell Rush! The varsity team proved to be a group of enthusiastic, interested and hard-working girls. The effort put forth by the defense with the completed passing of the forward line resulted in a winning season. It was an enjoyable year. Good luck in 1970 girls. Field Hockey VARSITY SCORES J.V. In the long and short of it, each victory was seen as a result of team effort and pride. Even though only one man won a race, every runner ran to win. Masco can be proud of its runners, who represented well their school. Led by steady performances by co-captains Don Hennigar and Hal Moore, Masconomet ' s supremacy in the Cape Ann League continued. Six of tire league ' s best runners wore the Red and White of Masco. Sophomore Bob Hennigar was, by far, the fastest runner in the league. In addition to winning the Catholic Memorial Freshman-Sophomore Division II and finishing fourth in the State Meet Division IV, Masco defeated such strong teams as Salem, Winnacunnet and Beverly, The over-all record was 15 wins, 3 losses. ' The 1969-70 season was one of ups and downs for the Masconomet gymnasts. However, as the season progressed there was a significant improvement, both in performance and attitude. Co-captains Kim Breed and Vic Noll along with Jack Gill are the only seniors so next year ' s team will be an experienced squad. Juniors Bill Glenn (rings), Scott Holt (high bars), Steve Cox (side and long horse), Jack Huckins (free x) and G. Records don ' t show very much? ! ? 3-9. At least the girls ' gymnastics team feels this to be true. They have learned to be good losers. This group of girls has undoubtedly the most enthusiasm and personality of any sports group. Outstanding routines were performed throughout the season by Nancy Eckel, Debbie Froberg, Beth Ferazzi and especially by Lynn Kermode and Cully D ' Agostino, who were our representatives in the Massachusetts State Gymnastics Meet. As a young team it has done extremely well -- each gymnast is a real wonder. We have high hopes for next year. mm 8 , ■ JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL: ROW 1: P. Ackerman, S. Crawford, J. Nelson, J. As of this writing, the girls ' varsity basketball team has an 8-2 record with one remaining game. Members of the team on this year ' s varsity are Cathy Anderson, Louanne Blackburn, and Sue Caples. Defensively speaking, Cathy and Louanne were out- standing this year in preventing the opposition from scoring. Offensively, Cathy and Louanne along with other team members, Sue Caples, Sandy Helve, Lauri Frizell, Sue Onufry, Cathy Mohoney and Robin Rooney combined to set a single game scoring record of 65 points. Sue, Sandy and Lauri combined for many fast breaks throughout the season to lead the team to a winning season. Seniors on the junior varsity team are Judy Humphreys and Fumiko Imai. Their efforts should be rewarded for fine playing on behalf of their team. ■ I ' • - ■ Tr= ■ - - ROW I; Mr. Casey (Adv. ), D. McNamara, T. Healey, R. Wyner, D. Dupouy, D. Inch, J. The Sawyer brothers, Chuck and Danny, along with Jeff MacGill came off the bench to lift the team when the regulars needed a rest. A team like this is sure to help the varsity for the next few years. Winning the Cape Ann League Championship with 8 wins and no losses was the major accomplishment on the way to a respectable record of 13 wins and 5 losses. Having qualified for the State Tournament, we bowed to the number one seeded team, Newton, by the narrowest of margins giving a certain moral victory. The team consisted of the following: Captain Rob Mailey, Captain-elect Doug Buttrick, Dean Schroeder, Chris Hatt, Tom Mailey, Jack Huckins, Peter Preston, Mile Abbott, Mike Hermans, Jim Temke, and Richard Moore.
