Mueller Mr. Gladu Anadyomene Anadyomene, the mystical underwater Grecian city, opened its gates for the 1967 Junior -Senior Prom, June 2. An underwater theme was decided upon, thus the name Anadyomene, which means the Rising up of the sea, was chosen. The underwater Grecian city was bor- dered with columns offset with a fountain. Special lighting gave the illusion of being in the midst of the depths of the sea. W4i n i ' r j i This year Thanksgiving was again preceded by the traditional junior-senior Powder Puff tussle. The fe- male members of each class carried through some particularly brilliant strategies masterminded by captains Roseanne Gianelli and Cindy Bullens. Tina Frizzell and Patricia Eremian displayed exceptional accuracy in their passing ability. Both sides claimed a technical victory at a 0-0 tie. Our thanks go to the cheerleaders and band for their inspiration and rousing cheers. Mr. Vlahos supplied excellent harmony on the base drum. You Can’t Take It With You On December 8 and 9, 1967, Masconomet presented the first play of the season, YOU CAN ' T TAKE IT WITH YOU by Moss Hart and George Kaufman. Under the direction of Miss Jean Jarvie, the cast turned in two fine per- formances. Special thanks go to the technical crews for their invaluable assistance. Chess Club The Chess Club meets to enjoy the serene pleasures of the world ' s most intellectual game. The club members spend many knights and days engrossed in this kingly pastime The club ' s advisor is Miss Shearer . Chefs Club The Chef ' s Club under the guidance of Mrs. Blanchard meet to show their true culinary talents . Photography Club This club consists of hard working interested students carrying out the development of pictures from beginning to end. They have contributed much to our yearbook and to the atmosphere of our school. This year it’s going to Killington and hopes to make another trip later on in the year. With Jon Saw- yer as President; Richard Demark as Vice-President; Jeffery Wayland as Secretary; and Pamela White as Trea- surer, you know it ' s got to be an in- teresting year . Chorale Under the direction of Miss Jarvie is another singing group The Chorale members are selected outstanding singers. They do highly original arrange- ments of classical and modern composers . Freshmen Class Officers FRESHMEN-- President, Su- san Shaffer; Vice-President, Kathy St. Peter Secretary, Daine Nangle; Treasurer, Sue Crawford . u Monitors A selected group of students are chosen annually to maintain control and order in our school corridors. These students enforce the rules of school dress and behavior. If disciplinary action is needed for some stu- dents, the monitors hold a court. The President is Charlie Taft; Vice- President is Chris Poor; and the Secretary is Mary Lou Newton. The monitors hold meetings under Mr. Dressers ' advice and supervision. Office Aides The office aides perform various duties while assisting in the office. They run the switchboard, deliver daily bulletins, make announcements over the P.A. system, help sort warnings and report cards, and do any other job that arises. The office aides are: Joseph Burke, Elizabeth Christian, Patrice Eremian, Christina Frizzell, Kevon Garrison, Rita Hurd, Janice Kinsvater, Sandra Kokernak, Helen Love, Carolyn Lyons, Barbara Mc- Leod, Pamela Smith, Dianne Swindell, Terrie Swindell, Linda Titus, Perrie Volz, and Pamela White. Singers Under the direction of Miss Jean Jarvie, approximately one-hundred students meet twice a week to practice selected pieces of music. Different degrees of soprano, altos, tenors, and basses harmonize these songs together, to perform to the stu- dent body, faculty members, parents, and alumni at Christmas, Easter, and various assemblies. Along with exercising the voice, singers is a great deal of fun, patience, and work. iWi Kaleidoscope Kaleidoscope, Masconomet ' s literary magazine, is published twice each school year and affords the creative student the chance for the display and publication of his art and literary works. The mag- azine again this year was proud to receive the New England Press Association Award for the fourth consecutive year, for excellence in the field of high school publica- tion. This year ' s staff, under the supervision of Miss Reynolds, are, Editor-in-Chief, Pamela Pinkham; Prose Editor, Steve Comack; Poetry Editor, Mary McArdle; and Art Editor, Christine Ackerman . Sock Friday nights after the raucous jeers and cheers for the basketball team have died down, the Masconomet gymnasium doors close while janitors converge with brooms. Floors are swept --ZIP ZAP- -the bleachers stashed away. The doors reopen as sanctuary for the rest- less teens who seek out excitement rather than going home, walking the streets, or driving to the DINER. Meanwhile, the thronging crowds have jammed the halls, surrendered their shoes to Hops numbered shelves and are clamoring to be let in for their weekend exercise. Boys gather on one side and girls on the other. Music of new comer groups, who are sometimes of ques- tionable talent, blast into the eager ears of a throng around the band. A few brave boys and girls shock all by dancing together as eager eyes beg the clocks to tick faster. At the magic hour--ll:00--the lights flash on, the crowds stream out, and another sock hop becomes history. -ij ry Pep Squad Many thanks and cheers should be given to our faithful girls of the Pep Squad. They ' ve done a great job cheering our teams on to victory (or otherwise!), look- ing great in their red and white colors, showing up faithfully at every game, and boosting our spirits at the rallies. Student Council The Student Council is an organi- zation formed to promote harmonious relations throughout the school, im- prove school spirit, assist in promot- ing school activities and assist in the management of the school. The officers are: Dianne Swindell President Cheri Quimby Vice-President Gail Breed Secretary Ken Kastner Treasurer Student Exchange Board The Student Exchange Board contributes to international under- standing by giving the scholarships to exchange students. Most of the money is raised in the annual candy sale and the International Dinner. President Gail Breed Vice President Steve King Treasurer Vicki Melzar Secretary Debby Rupp Mitobo Staff National Honor Society The National Honor Society runs the an- nual Cornucopia at Christmas time which gives canned goods to the Salvation Army, and the paperback bookstore, the proceeds from which provide a scholarship for a de- serving senior. The 1968 Mitobo staff began the year ' s work with a complete lack of experience and a great deal of enthu- siasm. A DAY IN THE LIFE is the sum of their creative efforts and diligent labors. They teach or assist in most physical education classes. President Martha Beck Vice President Carol Pavisi Treasurer Tina Frizzell Secretary Cynthia Perry Math Team In the first meet of the year the Mathletes” (Heh Heh) scored a league record of 182 points. The team is to be commended for tolerating the hare-brained victory schemes of it ' s advisor, Teunis Paarlberg, and it ' s cap- tain. Members include Ed Koenig (Captain), Chip Gregory, Jim Mahen, George Phaneuf, Dave Van Horn, Roily Walker, Jay Norris, Cathy Lavorgna, Scott Roberts, Virginia Shepard, Nancy Campbell, and Kathy Rolsma. Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders ' main function is to promote school spirit and to display pep and enthusiam. They represent the school body as a whole when visiting other schools and, therefore must reflect good sportsmanship at all times. Re- gardless of the game ' s results, the cheerleaders are always proud of their team . Members: Kevon Garrison -Captain, Deanna Babin, Karen Thing, Janet Ross, Dru Mahen, Patrice Eremian, Trina Wirth, and Debby Rupp. Substitutes: Mary Lou Newton, Gail Breed, and Sally Preston. Majorettes Masconomet ' s majorettes are an important part of the school. During football season they perform every Saturday at games, in addition to performing at ral- lies. Much work is involved in the creation of routines and practice of these routines by the whole squad. Announcers The announcers club is respon- sible for the P. A. broadcasts in the morning. This very talented club has made many entertaining and unique morning announcements. Members: Becky Best, Gail Breed, Betty Christian, Dave Ham- mond, Jon Maguire, Karen Mokler, Jay Norris, Lee Richman, and Glenn Shields. Stage Crew Band The stage crew is the dedicated school service group which donates its time and skills to preparing Masconomet th eatre productions and assemblies. The staging effects achieved by the crew are well worth calling professional. Members: A1 Caso, Jeane Clark, Dick Farr el, Dave Hammond, Steve Lawson, Caroll Lyons, Scott Nangle, Vern Nulk, Karen Onufry, Arthur Peterson, Karen Rosenburger, Ken Rosenburger, Mike Runnals, Sally Shaffer, Evan Sederquest, Glen Shields, and Nancy Smalls . The Masconomet High School Band has approximately ninety members from grades nine through twelve under the direction of Mr. Wayne Killian. It participates in the football season by playing during the half and at rallies. It also plays at special assemblies and gives a number of concerts throughout the year to name a few: the exchange concert with another high school, spring concert and Concert on the Green. It also plays for the graduation exercises. Thespians The National Thespian Society is an honorary orga- nization devoted to the dramatic arts. Membership is achieved through a point system earned by acting, working on the stagecrew, bus- iness staff or costume com - mittee . This years officers are President, Rick Porter; Vice- President, Jay Norris; Secre- tary, Nancy Andrew . Library Aids The library aides are involved in most of the aspects of library work including stamping, filing, and car- ing for the books. They are a great help to the librarians. Members: Nancy Anderson, Ivy Oakes, David Ballengee, Jeff Bowers, Donald Brooks, Pamela Burke, Laurie Carpenter, Ilona Classen, Sharon Derosier, Terri Gooding, Robert Hazelwood, Mike Hermans, Sharon Jackman, Mark Lively, Nancy Martinak, Kathy O ' Brien, Bill Simmons, Joleen Sterling, Kristin Scott, Cris Sullivan, Linda Thurston, Joy Turnbull, and Barbara Visser. Operetta The operetta presented this year was Fiorello. ' ' And one can say with con- fidence that it was an am- bitious undertaking. Di- rected by Jean Jarvie . Fiorello--Glenn Shields; Leads-- Marilynn Carlton, Dora; Steve Polkou, Cop; Gail Dunphy, Mrs. Fiorello; Bonnie Wade, secretary to Fiorello, 2nd wife. Unicorn The UNICORN, originally known as the REPAPSWEN, originated this year as Masconomet ' s school newspaper through the efforts of the journalism class . The monthly publication, under the direction of Mr. Constantino, at- tempted to combine school -oriented news, sports write-ups, and humor into an interesting communication media that would appeal to both stu- dents and faculty. Bruce Chapin, edi- tor; Pam Smith, assistant editor; Karen Mokler, art editor; and a staff of fourteen; all contributed to the newspaper . Biology Club Masco ’s Biology Club functions to sup- port and inspire inter- ested science stu dents to further their inter- ests and abilities . This year ' s president is Elizabeth McDevitt, secretary-treasurer is Tony Wyner, Vice- President is Alice Ken- ney, and Sergeant -of - Arms is Henry Wilson. Business Club The goal of the business club is to meet friends that are underclassmen. Just to have fun . They plan a visit to the Prudential Building. They have parties and invite guests to speak about different careers in the business field. House Two Chorus The House Two Chorus, a younger version of the Singers, consists of the ninth and tenth grade. Last year, Singers doubled in size, so the Chorus was started this year. There are about eighty students in the group. The Chorus participates and functions basically the same as Singers, but they are coming into their own as a name. The group is under the direction of Miss Jean Jarvie . Future Nurses Club The Future Nurse ' s Club consists of a group of girls inter- ested in the field of nursing. Through lis- tening to speakers and going on various field trips, they learn about the different aspects of nursing. 62 mff f M L i | j . w 1 Football In tough competition with other North Shore schools, the Masconomet Chief- tains ploughed their way to a 3 win, 6 loss record. The highlight of the season was the Ipswich game, in which an injury - ridden Masco team showed superb defen- sive strength, winning 2-0 by virtue of Charlie Taft’s blocking a Tiger punt in the end zone. Next year ' s backfield promises to be quite talented, as only three players - Tony Wyner, Danny Eremian, and Stu Ha 11 --will graduate, leaving Lenny Dwinnel, Jeff Begin, Flip Roland, and Chad Dresser. The front line will lose Charlie Taft, Eric Schmitt, Scott Mayo, Pete Watson, and Bob Dehmer. For the first time in Masconomet ' s his- tory, a girls varsity team has been unde- feated ' The field hockey team finished with a record of six wins and four ties. The girls on the varsity team are Holly Hoagland, Cindy Perry, Patrice Eremian, Shelly Connor, (co-captain) Rose Ann Gianelli, Leea Osborne, Sally Preston, Ellen Bryant, Gail Breed, (co-captain) Sue Shipley, Dottie Veilleux, Cindy Dotson, Lag Giannino, Ann Curtis, Carol Pavesi. Behind the scenes were Ginny Hobson, Mary Lou Newton, and our great coach; Miss Sue Weir. Masco . , . 1 defeated Swampscott . . . 1 Masco . . . 2 defeated No. Reading. . . 0 Masco . . . 2 defeated Georgetown . . . 0 Masco . , . 1 tied Newburyport . . . 1 Masco . . . 2 defeated Reading . . . . . 1 Masco . . . 7 defeated Ipsw ich • • • . . 1 Masco . . . 1 tied Danvers . . . . . 1 Masco . . , 1 tied Swampscott . . . 1 Masco . , . 0 tied Manchester . . . 0 With Captain Steve Crowe leading the way, the Cross Country Team com- piled an 8-0 record in the Cape Ann League and an overall record of 13-1-1 during the 1967 season. This is the sixth straight CAL crown for the boys and they have won the CAL open for seven consecutive years. These rec- ords speak for themselves seeing that the league has only been in existance for eight years. 68 Members of the Varsity: Steve Crowe, Captain, Lin Balentine, Dave Farley, and Hal Moore. Members of the Junior Varsity: Dave Boyd, Jerry Benson, Kim Castner, Bob Getz, Dana Griffin, Bob Mailey, Wayne Nissen, Eric Paulson, Scott Pinkh am, Jim Ray, and Tom Cassidy. : -WV( Boys Basketball Team The basketball team faced tough competition but all three teams managed some victories. The teams gained practical ex- perience which can be utilized in later years . Varsity members: Roy Bergstrom, Roland Walker, Joe Fowler, Paul Taylor, Tony Wyner, Tommy Vitale, George Fowler, Bruce Campbell, Charlie Peters, Glen Swanson, Lenny Dwinnell, Bill Regii, Manager. Varsity 7-11 J.V. 2-15 71 Boy’s Gymnastics The gymnastics team, under the coaching of Mr. Bill Bonnie, had a fair season this year. The members of this team put a lot of time and hard work into their rou- tines. The members are Steve Bar- num, Vern Nulk, co -captains; Gerry Benson; Jeff Bowers; Kim Breed; Don Cox; Rich DeGrandpre; Artie Devenuti; Dave Dupouy; Dana Griffin; Jack Huckins; Clyde Irwin; Fred Newell; Mike Phelan and Steve Polkow. Hockey Team The 1967-1968 Chieftains Hockey Team had a very successful season with a Merrimac valley league record of 7-4-3 and an overall record of 10- 5 -3 . The Co -Captains for this years team were Steve Crowe and Dan Eremian. Both members of the Senior Class. The other members of the hockey team are: Charlie Taft, James Dugan, Gregg Kim- ball, and Steve Moore. Les Peckham, Bob Mailey, Graham Chadwick, Chris Poor, Scott Cole, Jeff Ackerman, Ken Castner, Don Hennigar, and Peter Masse . . . Jeff Begin . -.Mi Girls Gymnastics Team Girls ' record was 4 wins, 5 losses. The girls who are eligible to partici- pate in the state meets are: Carol Pavesi; Leah Osborne; and Tina Friz- zell. These girls qualify for this event by their skillful performances of diffi- cult moves on the horse and trampoline. Other events include free exercise, bars, and beam. The girls are judged on the difficulty of the stunt, its execu- tion form and general appearance of routine. Much of the credit is due to the new coach, Miss Finnigan. Girls’ Basketball In Masconomet athletic adventures this year a rol- licking new act was introduced- -the girls ' basketball team. The hilarious antics of its members brought cheers and chuckles from the crowds in the bleachers. The heartening efforts made by the group to entertain its fans were emphasized by the numerous victories (of their rivals). Special recognition should be given to the captain Lag ' s screams and humerous comments which brought thundering applause and to Ed Koenig for being a loyal spectator and team mascot - - They may not win many but they ' re such a joy to watch. We would especially like to thank Miss Talbot for her patience, understanding, and dedication during the ' 68 season . The wind bit through heavy winter coats, forcing even city kids to stay inside. Only sand and plow trucks were moving. One battered, orange truck plodded up 38th Street. Turning the corner by Poxie’s Bar” it slammed head on into a drift, scattering snow and rubbish and something else. Something, some . . . the truck driver threw open the cab door and jumped down. Nearly up to his waist in snow, he pushed to the front of the truck. Hot pains ran through his icy fingers. Jimmie Brad ' s old man had been found, dead, and frozen solid, and still smelling of whiskey. When they brought him to the hospital morgue, I was just being born. S.
