STUDENT BODY What does it mean to be a student at MC? Maryville College is much more than a campus of buildings. It is a campus filled with all different types of people with dif- ferent interests, goals, and concerns. Being a student can mean exploring the world of Shakespeare, the world of the microscopic, or the world of the United Nations. It can mean carrying a horn down a parade route or carrying a pigskin down a football field. It can mean deincing The Nutcracker on a stage or dancing Motown in a gym. It can mean acting Shaw or singing Handel. It can mean seeing your name in print — as a byline over a news story or as a signature under a poem. It can mean learning to shoot a bow, build a campfire, or paddle a canoe. It can mean seeing your first opera, performing one, or building the set for one. It can mean making the winning basket, goal, or home run. It can mean drawing a bow across the strings of a violin or a brush across the canvas. It can mean runn- ing for office or running a marathon. It means going Krogering, mailing, or just partying. It means working hard, then getting to play hard. But all students, whether they spend most of their time in Thaw Hall or across campus in the FAC, share cer- tain things. Being a student at MC means having a voice in campus government. It means having athletic teams, musical groups, artists, and publications to be proud of. It means seeing the mountains every day and attending classes in buildings that are historic landmarks. Most of all, being a student at MC means having choices. It means something different to everyone, but always something important. It means having a place to belong. Homecoming 1986 was a celebration of the Scots at MC. After a couple of nights of frantic float building, the weekend was underway with the annual homecoming parade through downtown Maryville. Later that evening, MC alumni gathered to rename the Student Center and to remember one of their fellow alumni, Sharon Crane. By the end of the night the Student Center had reemerged as Isaac ' s in honor ofMC ' s first president Isaac Anderson. The rains came on Saturday, but MC ' s celebration of the Scots was undaunted despite the loss to archrival Hampden- Sydney, 28-7. Defeat was soothed as the homecoming crowds danced the night away to the big band sound of Archie Ashe and Windfall at Morningside Inn. Perhaps it was a special spirit or some other phenomena, but Homecoming 1986 drew the college community closer together. 8 Homecoming
