Though many miles now separate us from his wisdom and his humor, the truths he imparted to us in the all too short time that he served as our Chaplain here at Maryview Hos- pital continue to constitute a vital part of our daily lives. ln appreciation for all that you have given, not only to us but also to others, we humbly dedicate this, our Yearbook, to you FATHER FRANCIS J. Directress of Nursing iifffefe 'urge if if I Each day Sister Elizabeth has in some way guided us along the path lead- ing to the fulfillment of our goals. Her wisdom and understanding have played a vital role in our development into professional Christian nurses. The Second Vatican Council, the epoch of our times, required three years preparation under the guidance of Pope John XXIII and his officiates in whatever aspects the mind of God has willed. Sister Elizabeth also guides a three year preparation period for each of her students. lt is her goal to motivate and assist the individual student toward a spiritually, professionally, socially, and intellectually successful future. The Maryview student is inspired to take each minute fragment of knowledge and convert it into a working material to widen her own horizon and to make a greater contribution to her family, community, and inevitably mankind. These ideals under Sister Elizabeth are brought to light, reviewed and made comprehensible for the student to fully assimilate as part of her character. It is in this spirit of the Vatican Council, to bring forth greater under- standing and knowledge, that Sister Elizabeth directs her students. The 'hurricane that heralded the arrival of the class of i963 and kept many of us from arriving on time even on that first day? We were soon un- packed and anxious to begin our new lives as STUDENT NURSES only to discover that all would not be sweetness and light. Initia- tion began and we were often attacked in the wee small hours of the morn by strange creatures from down the hall called Juniors complete with shaving cream, toothpaste, and hand lotion to touch up our hairstyles. POM-POM Pick made quite a hit in the cafeteria. 'We elected our first class officers with Ahern as president and really began to feel united. Remember our first anniversary at Maryview? We had survived one month and obtained one button for the precious cap we hoped to receive in March. Sister Mary Paul and Mrs. Edwards gave us a party that first time and each month for the next five. Be- tween studying, and mainly sleeping the next weeks flew by with Halloween parties, bottle drives, and feast day parties and soon it was time for Thanksgiving vacation. After our return from the holiday, basket- ball began and four members of the class made the team. We also had representation on the cheerleader squad. Soon enough Christ- mas was upon us 'and we attended our first Christmas dance given by the doctors at Sub- urban Country Club. And then we were off for two whole weeks at home. ln the next weeks we lost three of the group to more in- teresting pursuits such as marriage and re- ceived daily lectures from Sister Mary Paul to lift up your feet and climb that moun- tain . At last March l9, l96l arrived and we received our caps amidst a flood of tears. Can we ever forget With These Hands, the Nightingale Pledge, how the candles kept falling out of the lamps, or those parties at the Holiday Inn? During the months many changes came to pass. Working 7-3 for the first time was a thrill for us all, but the death of Monsignor Govaert brought sadness to our hearts. Sister Marv Paul left for France and we knew we had lost another good friend, Ahern won Dis- trict Miss Student Nurse, Sr. James Annette and Sr. Eileen Mary transferred to a college in D. C., our first group began working in the OR and everyone looked forward to summer vacation. Trips to Va. Beach with Padre, working relief, sleeping, singing with the Glee Club, and best of all being able to stay out every night until lO:3O P.M. helped to pass the summer and before we knew it we had re- ceived our Junior stripes and watched our grandmothers graduate. Now it was our turn to initiate our little sisters and I wonder whose idea it was to bury them in the sand at our annual picnic that year? We elected new class officers with Babbs as president, held several school and district offices, instituted Maryview's first football team, struggled through Peds. and OB and took our first Leagues, made a movie star- ring Liz Howard and Mike Walden , and learned to do the Twist, Christmas came and with it an unhappy face on those of us spending our first holiday away from home. February arrived all too quickly and off to Seton trooped seven of our classmates. Upon their return months later, we noticed that several improvements had been made, but among the most outstanding was that Gannon had learned to Twist, ln June we received our class rings and Senior bands. Another departure brought grief among us for Fr. Allen, our beloved chaplain, stepped aboard a plane and started his journey to the mysterious land of Turkey. Our class sang the Whiffenpoof Song as a farewell. Senior year began in Aug. with the gradua- tion of our big sisters and we took their place with pride and enthusiasm. Lynda took the leadership of the SCO. Warren was elected class president, Ahern became District and State Pres., Gannon wan the state Miss Stu- dent Nurse title, Kohut was co-captain of basketball and Walsh head cheerleader. Bottle drives became popular-just ask Ann? Our calendar count down diminished and classes finally ended. Comps behind-Boards ahead, as OUR big day arrived, it seemed our jour- ney only began yesterday, yet the mountain path is strewn with joys, sorrows, love, friend- ship, and memories which will live in our hearts forever. 6 , 1 ws . . ever sfream. , . , 'Sv 1 1' 'figg 111713 11 N111 gtkmm 1 1 fu, , 1- .1 ' ' .m .... The culmination of six months hard work brings Nancy Hall to her knees in gratitude as she re- ceives her precious cap. ii vig, , , , ,N 5, , , fre' W5 H ,,,. ' '-aixkxx ' I Dear parents, The years pass-oh! how quickly-and still time beckons us ever onward. We have now reached a plateau in our lives when we must bid fond adieu to childhood and assume different roles-those of young women in a strange new world. As we reflect upon the past we realize that without You, dearest parents, our dreams could never have been fulfilled. lt is You who gave us life and love, the greatest gifts of all. lt is you who have provided the physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual environments which have served as the basis for the formation of our personalities and characters. ln humblest gratitude we wish to express our heartfelt thanks and to dedicate this page of Caritas to You. The future lies ahead and we know that we must face innumerable chal- lenges. Problems shall arise, but having profited from your wisdom in the past, we shall be capable of solving them. Heartaches and tears, too, shall be ours with which to cope, but remembering the happiness we have known, we shall find the courage to endure these moments. Temptation will rear her ugly head in our paths, but recalling your dreams for us, we shall find the strength to resist her. At times we will be lonely, but knowing that You love us still, we shall bear our loneliness with heads held high. Love shall come our way, and having felt your love for us and each other we will know if our love is sincere. We accept these challenges eagerly for they provide us with an oppor- tunity for further growth and achievements. They present a chance for us to reassure You that your endeavors have not been in vain-that we have truly been enriched by your guidance. We are your daughters, the products of your love. We shall always be your daughters even when far away from the shelter of that love. To nursing and to life we shall attempt to give our best in an effort to become the epitome of all your desires and hopes for us. And so, dearest parents, Fare- well , until we can return enriched by our experiences and in some way repay the immeasurable debt we owe-that of love given unceasingly, un- selfishly, asking nothing in return. What greater gift hath Man? 56 gn gzopreczdzifbzz As we dedicate this page to those who have given their time, efforts, and hearts to the production of Caritas , l would like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the entire staff. A yearbook is a history of people and in nursing it is a history of love and service. To: Father Setzer who has led us on the path of Christian giving and charity. Sister Elizabeth whose example of self discipline has given us a model of strength to follow. The Faculty who have provided learning experiences from which we have grown and broadened our horizons. Jim Saine and Delmar Publishing Company whose guidance has polished the humble attempts of the Caritas staff. George Torres and O'Neal's Photographic Salon whose photography has enhanced our yearbook. The Staff and Student Body who have given faith from which l found tomorrow, time to lighten the burden, and enthusiasm which is the backbone of such a long project. 57 Col.
