STudenTs were expecTed To wear a basic uniform of leoTards and TighTs every day as They learned The many differenT Tecniques. These included modern, balleT and absTracT dance. The sTudenTs learned poise, grace, and self-confidence along wiTh a good wor- kouT. In dance, sTudenTs were given The freedom To creaTe and discover new ways To show Their emoTions. The major highpoinTs of dance were The concerTs. The beginning dance classes worked all year To puT on a concerT in The spring. While advanced dance classes puT on concerTs in The fall as well as The spring. These concerTs gave The sTudenTs a chance To 'TsTruT Their sTuff and show Their creaTiviTy. Dance sTudenTs also goT To cho- reograph Their own dances and choose Their own music. The mosT popular music was pop rock, even Though The Teachers usually pre- ferred insTrumenTal music. Since sTudenTs have To work TogeTher, each class usually became like one big family. Dance Teaches more Than jusT dance Tecni- ques: iT also Teaches human relaTions. The dancers learned how To communicaTe and relaTe wiTh each oTher by working TogeTher, There aremany benefiTs from being in dance. Audio Visual Assistants The AV Assistants may not look very busy, but when not playing cards or talking, they are usually running close circuit T.V.s for teach- ers, or making tapes, like the ones seen for elections. They're also found running around making and deliver- ing xeroxs. They even dupli- cate audio and video tapes, and if they know how, duplicate them. Academic Decathlon The Academic Decathlon was created last year to provide stimulating compe- tition for students. The stu- dents competed in three di- visions, Varsity, Scholastic, and Honors, which were based on their grade point average. Each division consisted of two members plus an alter- nate. The competitions were divided into ten events ranging from re- quired courses to fine arts and the Super Quiz. The main purpose of the De- cathlon was to emphasize the academic abilities of the participating students. There were never any real losers just chances to in- crease their horizons. The students were able to bet- ter themselves academical- ly. Academic Decathlon was a positive way to put some of the MHS brain pow- er to work. 45 Con I QeT up now? JROTC JROTC is one of the more active organizations on campus, with such activities as the Veteran's Day Pa- rade, Homecoming Parade, replling, and touring Nation- al Guard facilities. JROTC has been an active part of the Maryvale cam- pus since 'l97O. For the sev- enth year in a row Sixth Bat- talion has won the Follow lvie Trophy, and is the highest scoring JROTC unit in Ari- zona. They have also done community services by hold- ing a child finger-printing service, and by providing entertainment for PTA meetings. The JROTC has re- ceived Apple computers and publish their own news- letter. The computers have been used to make the ca- det staff's jobs easier. One of the newer things that Sturdivant likes is the Cadet Challenge. lt consists of physical training such as chin-ups, situps, the mile run, the shuttle run, the fifty yard dash, and the standing broad jump. Cadets do this every week and all cadets participate unless they have asthma, a broken leg, or things medically wrong with them. There is no specific amount of exercise to com- plete as long as the cadets show some effort. 67 JROTC 5' pf FRONT ROW: Tom Robinson, David Persell, Miszi Barnes. WiTh an incon- sisTanT sTarTlng line-up, due To injurys, ineliglbiliTy, The Team siruggled Through The season, Even Though iT may have been a Tough season The Team held iT's head high and was sTill able To defeaT lVlaryvale's rival Trevor Browne wiTh a score of 74- 58. There were Three seniors on The varsiTy Team This year: Phillipl Sparks, Ken SumpTer, and David SmiTh. J.V. Baskeiball The Junior VarsiTy had a worThwhile season. They showed aloT of effori To aim high and win well, buT wiTh a sllghT leT up iT seemed To leT mosT games slide by. A new coach was broughT in This year To help beTTer and build The J.V. Varsiiy And JV Wrestling The deTerminaTion of an Ml-l.S. wresTler To bin his man To The mai was clearly shown in The '86-'87 wres- Tling season. Even though their sea- son wasn't that great they still had some victorious wins such as against Central with a score of 26 to 'lo and also against Carl Haydon 9-O. lt was bad, they just weren't very good, but at least they triedl stated coach Hicks. The main thing the team lacked was a good pitching staff. Most of the games were hard but there's al- ways some that are harder to play. The overall season ended with 8 wins and 9 losses. Frosh Wrestling The freshman wrestling team finished a rough sea- son due to the fact most of the players were moved up to J.V. or Varsity earlier in the year. Even though they didn't win any team match- es they did well in their indi- vidual matched. Coach Martinez was disappointed in the turnout of guys that went out for frosh wrestling. Freshman teams are usually the biggest. Not the case for wrestling at Ml-iS. They didn't have many different weight classes so they didn't really have a chance to win the team matches. It was a good experience to, get them ready for next year. 93 Q9 fe'? Ygicqf' dow VGOWQ f0r 1hefxbes1f fsho1. f MW, W3 WW, Here comes ihe birdie. Rooms, are clean, bul- leTin boards are newsy, and posTers have been hung. Each year brings some new program, chal- lenge, or change sTaTes one Teacher. No Two years have ever been The same. This can be said easily because of The I2 years average of Teaching aT lVl.l-l.S, The focus This year was Trying To geT The sTudenTs invoived and To increase aTTendance. Teachers also worked on lowering The drop ouT raTe and cuTTing down on Tardies. Various incenTlves were given in order To meeT The objecTlve of beTTer aTTendance. Our year started out fairly well: we began with well over a dozen new recruits, most of which would write in English. Sadly, however, only three people Lanette Kirk, Mary Mickle, and myself, actually Knew what they were doing, andeven our Knowledgeability was in question What happened that was complete chaos: on one side of the room, the three of us and crack-this signifies iournalistic ability, not an illegal drug-sportswriter David Smith were trying to make our deadline, on the other, our advisor, Mary Beth Reed, merci- lessly whipping the less agreeable newcomers into submis- sion, By now, with any luck, I have whetted your appetite for some intimate facts about the driving forces behind this publication. No? Fine. Go look at the golf pictures. See if I care Those of you who have the courage to stick this thing out, read on Mary Mickle was Editor-infCheif as well as head nag, until her resignation at the semester. This sounds insubordinate, I know, but I mean it sincerely. Nine out of every ten editors have to nag to get results: unfortunately, I got one of these nine Even so working with her over the past two years has oftenbeen fun and never has been boring, Mary, if you're the slightest bit annoyed at what I've written about, l'm truly sorry. But remember, you made me write this. This next sentence is going to sound corny and stupid, but it's one of those rare cases of one matching one's occupation, like Robin Leach, so here it goes' Captain Lanette T. Kirk, the co-editor and next year's supreme commander in cheif of the U.S,S, Pantherprise. Sorry, I cauIdn't help myself Any- ways, has now risen above her trying andcondescending former task of handling ads, a job in newspaper that gives a new meaning to the term necessary evil She is now tak- ing ful control of the newspaper, keeping it moving upwards in quality at a steady pace David Smith is something of an enigma to me. Oh, he doesn't mumble incomprehensibly or carve his girlfriends' names in his skull or anything like that, he puzzles me because he enjoys writing sports stories. The prevalent attitude about doing sports among most Publications fjlk, including yours truly is, Well , , lf I have to . As you might imagine, these facts make David quite a god send to all of us. The mystery, however, will probably remain unsolved throughout eternity. As for me, also co-editor, I do nothing and everything, mostly nothing. l take to editorials like David takes to sports partly because I like expressing my own undeluted, liberal opinions, and partly because no one else wants to do them. Hopefully by now I will have raised a ruckus on several issues of great political and moral significance other than the Monkees Ms. Reed is our advisor and Mary's mentor in the art of nagging. She was stuck with unenviable tasks of teaching a group of then unruly vagabonds to write while keeping the four of us in line, not to mention also handling the yearbook gang. There you have it Of course there are several othe rpeople I should mention in detail, but like I said, l'm writing this really early. and Ms Reeds been training the new staffers, so anything I write about them would probably be way off base So to Jackee, Terrie, Sandra, Pam, well at least your pictures are here Goodnight Maryvale I-lighg it's been unusu- al. 212 ' E -s.
