as When Clark Osborne ftop leftj runs with the ball, he often gets help from Ignacio Trasancos and Tim Feller, so when Anthony jones carries the ball flower leftj Clark helps out although Anthony could scamper on his own ftop rightj. Defense like this tackle by Pat Cordova, Mike West and Scott johnson make it tough on opposing runners. Sports 23

Panthers bury Central for homecoming, 41-0 ln Casa Grande for the fifth game, Maryvale proved to be an equal opportunity killer. Quarterback Richard Wooten, place kicker Ron Gue, and Receiver Randy Kindred as well as Hudak and jones scored and wrote Casa Grande's epitaph 27-0. On Homecoming, the Panthers faced the Central Bobcats and found that the force was with them. The force of jones, Hudak and Osborne, with one, two and three TD's respectively. Finishing off Central's humiliation was Gue with five points and that was all for the Bobcats, 41-0. Game 7 was a big one for the Panthers as they played Trevor Browne on the Bruins turf. The Bruins got off to a good start, however and Maryvale was trailing by 17 points at the end of the first half. The third quarter brought Maryvale's only score, a touchdown by jones. Browne's defense managed to keep Osborne, Hudak and jones under 40 yards each, a big factor in the game. In the fourth quarter the Panthers were fighting a losing battle. Trevor scored another TD, added an extra point and when time ran out, the score was Trevor Browne 24, Maryvale 6. Mr. Hyde was back when Maryvale met Alhambra and it showed. Number 11, Randy Kindred, went in for a touchdown late in the first quarter. Combined with a 2 point conversion the Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, quarter- back Wooten connected with Osborne to put in the Panthers last six points and put the Lions in their place, 14-6. The ninth game of the season brought the Panthers and Camelback Spartans together. Hanging in the balance was a play-off berth for Maryvale. But a fired-up Spartan team rained on the MHS parade with the final score 24-7. Given one more chance by a twist of events, the Panthers had to beat South Mountain in their final game and the Alhambra Lions would have to defeat the Camelback Spartans to force a three-way tie. Friday was a big evening for high school students around the Valley. The Panthers pulled off their job, defeating the Rebels 38-2. However, a late score kept many Panther fans from finding out the outcome of the Alhambra- Camelback game until Saturday. The Lions had won and the tie-breaker was on. On a cold, damp night at Central's Bobcat Stadium, Maryvale, Alhambra, and Camelback were ready to see who went to the play-offs. In the first game, Maryvale's Hyde team simply obliterat- ed Alhambra's defense for 9 points in the first quarter and 10 points in the second. The Lion's season ended abruptly on November 15 under a 19-0 Panther victory. The Spartans were next, but fared no better. Their season also ended that night as they were also finished by a Maryvale 20, Camelback 0, score. An elated Maryvale cheered its team to Phoenix College's Hoy Field on November 19. The Panthers were facing their biggest game, and one of their toughest opponents, the Agua Fria Owls. The first quarter was a grim contest and neither the Panthers nor the Owls could move the ball into the end-zone. Maryvale exploded in the second quarter, however and punished Agua Fria's defense with 13 points to the Owl's 0. When the teams came back from the locker rooms, Agua Fria was out to win, delivering a 7-point blow to the Panthers. The fourth quarter was a heart stopper, with both teams scoring, in turn. But when the smoke cleared, Maryvale was the only team standing. Maryvale was going to the semi-finals and Agua Fria was going home with a losing 27-21 score. With a new hope, Maryvale was ready to again face the Moon Valley Rockets. This time the Panthers thought they could win. At Glendale Community College, the Panthers hoped to win a shot at the state AAA title. Maryvale started big with a TD in the first quarter, but couIdn't stop the Rockets offense, or get around their defense. The Panther scoring was over with 7 points and Moon Valley went on to beat Trevor Browne for the state championship because of their 35-7 victory at GCC. The Panthers ended their season with a 11-4 record, a championship title for the Metro Division and hopes for next year.
