Some students came early, hoping to avoid the rush and oth- ers dragged in, barely making the deadline. Some students were very confused about which text books to take, but then there were others who just breezed through. Lockers were also a problem. As usual, the 4'l l people got top lockers and the 6' people got the bottom ones. When it came to get l.D.'s taken, everyone forced a smile to their tace to make the picture look good. There was the school cafeteria with dit- terent, nutritious, sometimes unidenti- liable kinds of toods, 75 per cent of which contained peanut butter. Fast food restaraunts were popular, de- spite rising costs. McDonalds, lack-in- the-Box and Taco Bell are only a tew ot the popular places. Still others yearned tor real old-ta- shioned cooking and headed for home. Eating outside was popular I upper left and upper rightl among many students. After students Hnished eating they could participate or just watch such activities as Pass-the-Orange , Pin-the-Tail on the Bobcat , and 'Brownie Eating . Some kids were triumphant victors in the games. Not only were there dedi- cated fans who would sweat through the teams' every touch- down, but there were those who didn't even know how the game of football was played. They were there to see friends or to find out what was going on after the game. Some people were dressed nicely, even more so than they dressed at school. They were probably going to one of the many dances held in the gym. There were those who joined the endless line at the refreshment stand during half-time. For those who were not hungary or thirsty, there was the half-time show to enjoy, but whether it was to so- cialize, watch, or just for some- thing to do, the football games were a fun and popular way to spend Friday nights. With only two returning players, they were thrust into a new league with much harder competition, but they im- proved atter each game. They beat out Trevor Browne in a close match ot 6-15, 15-12, 15-5, to reserve the League B fourth and final seat going into Divi- sion. The Panthers exploded to the peak ot their skill at Division. First they eliminat- ed Arcadia who were number one League A, 15-3, 15-7. Their next game was against West, and they stopped them at 15-4, 16-14. ln the tinals, it was Maryvale and Camelback again, whom they had previously lost to three times that season. The Panthers won it 15-1O, 17-7, to take all three matches in only two games, and the Metro-Division Championship. Following assorted acts ot student violence at neighboring district schools, student government joined with Trevor Browne's govern- ment to form a student task torce. Their meetings were guite successful as shown by the lack ot violence and van- dalism usually associated with the Mar- yvale-Browne game. Student govern- ment also led a successful can tood drive tor Christmas. Maryvale came out on top when they challenged Trevor to see who could get more cans. The statt started with a grand twelve page issue celebrating the opening of school. The paper did adopt a magazine format, so twelve pages weren't that many. Seriously, the new format was handled nicely as artwork and photos were used in abandon. Generally be- cause ot a lack ot copy. During the year, a whirlwind named Lori Todd came in, helped a little and moved on. Four statt members, Dennis, Gil Leighty, Steve Carroll, and Detta l-lurlbert con- cluded three consecutive years on statt. 120 Orginizations magazine Trying to organize the entire staff in the two months she attended Maryvale was a rough job for Lori Todd K upper leftj. This years staff sexpot, Detta Hurlbert ftop centerl is shown away from her typewrit- er for once. Lori Olsen, assistant editor, stayed busy complaining and eating. Believe it or not it takes Lori 3V2 hours to eat one Big Mac. Her production record at deadline proved this. Sherri Dropik spent her time saying things like Gilllllf Now what can l do? Her many iobs ranged from keeping lusty Steve Car- roll calm to trying to sedate whining pho- tographer Tom Leggin. Poor Tom was picked on all through the year. Every time he had to take a group shot 900 biology experiments were due the next morning. Off the wall, Audrey Sorensen spent most 192 Organization of her time being mean to the nursery school kids Laurie Groscost brought in from child development. No one saw much of Dennis Goodman this year. He thinks he is invisible but the rest of the staff think he is becoming a hermit. He grew a beard, saved five of his paychecks and moved into the darkroom. All he has had with him is his camera, cassette player, and Elton lohn tape. He came out once a week to get a new pair of tennis shoes. Four or five non-staffers seem to make it to class more than half the of the staff did. Our typewriter grew a Laura Dameron and Tara Reed. Our attendance cards grew a cousin Randy Leighty. The only words Randy knew were Pink or Buff. Advisor Earl Stinson became so disgusted with the staff he put in a drop slip. The schedule change committe would not ap- prove it so he took up crossword puzzles and golf. No drastic reforms were necessary to ac- complish this feat and few were forthcom- ing. Both administrators were easily acces- sable to students and teachers with prob- lems. Mr. Miller was particularly effective in his role as curriculum leader, but also led the return of peace on the campus after Mary- vale and other schools experienced vio- lence on and off campus during the early part of the school year. Geiler, who retired from the navy reserve after 20 years service, used that exper- ience to run a tight ship, especially in the field of attendance. He was particular- ly helpful to students who had scheduling problems and could be counted on to find money for worthy projects around school. fldmjnjsztra tion handles rules, sports, clubs Assistant principals Martin Ulloa and Dorann Thoreen, also gaining conti- dence in their second year on the job, shared in bringing stability to the cam- pus and helping torrn one ot the most effective administrative teams in the district. Although their primary duty is han- dling student discipline problems, both enjoy their secondary responsibilities. Mr. Ulloa serves as Maryvale's Athletic Director and sets up schedules for the various varsity, jayvee and freshman teams. He also keeps a check on eligi- bilty ot all the athletes. Mrs. Thoreen, a tormer English teacher and Student Government advisor, works with the school's extracurricular and co-curricular activities. She has been largely responsible tor the return ot enthusiastically received assemblies. ff' 7.3 I, ,, .,.. ,l , .E -.1 1. ffm- 146 Curricul BECK Y BAKER ESP CHARLES BANKS Business NES TORE BARTH OLOME W Business IOYCE BENNER English BLANCHE BERRY Performing Arts GLENARD BE YELER Social Studies BRIAN BLA CK Social Studies ALMEDA BOA TWRI GH T English BE VERL Y BOS TROM Physical Education KENNETH BOTTCHER ESP BETTY BRAIG Art Ouindanel BRIMS Nurse ANN BRUCE Social Studies BEA TRICE BYRON Counseling DAN CAIN Social Studies IERRY CARLSON English IOSEPH CARTER ROTC DUANE CHARLESWORTH Business RICHARD CLARY Performing Arts IAMES CLAY English DEBORAH COLLINS Counseling CHRIS CONNARD English FRIEDA COOPER Business MEL VIN CRAIN Industrial Arts Um 'pf H 4 , gg I , L L 2' I 5 Enrollment loss problem for MHS faculty The school year proved to be a remarkably steady one for the faculty of Maryvale High School as few changes were made in their routine. The veteran teachers were joined, not by new teachers but by transfers from other campuses in the district as money problems caused by declining enrollment to plague the district. Declining enrollment hit the Art department as it lost a long-time friend, Ceramics teacher Cal Tenny. Richard Shilling tought three ceram-Q ics classes as well as his Craft classes. Mrs. Elizabeth Meineke kept her depart- ment going as smoothly as ever. The English department should have installed revolving doors. Not only did Arline Ranck and Tom Dickerson split their time at Maryvale with other duties, but Kay Larson tought until mid-term only to leave making room tor lim Waugh who tought at Maryvale last yearg Mary Luckenbill interrupted her teaching year to bring a son, Paul Christopher into the world: l oyce Benner en- joyed her first full year here atter moving from West at semester break last year. Q ..fA ' i X ' Xb - -I jl, This is the hardest thing I have ever written. Four years ago as I sat in Mr. Stinson's journalism class I couldn't even imagine that I would someday be writing this, the final copy. This will put the finishing touches on the 1981 Panthorian and on some of the best experiences I have ever had. I owe many thanks to many people for their help on the yearbook and just keeping me alive and sane. Mr. Stinson, I have a confession to make. Ever since December of my sophomore year, I have been able to see through your mean act. I know that you've always wanted me to think that you hated me but I always understood that you really just disliked me a lol. Tommy Leggin, Thank you. You've been a great help. You get my vote tor Rookie ot the year . Besides that, you've given Uncle Earl someone else to yell at. CYou are the only other per- son who threw the phone oft the desk, besides mel. Randy, Thank you for all the times you've run out to the snack bar tor me. fWithout you, I probably would have died ot starvationl. And to the rest of the late night dead- lines statt, Lori, Sherri, Steve, and parti- culary Dennis ftor knowing more than I did most of the timel. Here are a tew non-staffers who I would personally like to thank. Diane Dixon, for all the time I picked on you. Like when your senior picture was ruined and you had to give me a new one, and also when you had to come in here 900 times just to get one picture taken. Tara Reed tor being a special friend and supporting me in all the tough de- cisions I had to make. To you the people of Maryvale, for who you are and what you do. I K QW?
