1980 VIKING Staff Presents Times Of Change Life Belongs To The Living And He Who Lives Must Be Prepared For Change In Loving Memory We Say Farewell To- Sometimes while sitting late at night When lights are out and the fire bums low , Our wistful eyes see in the brand Your face as it looked long ago ; And then we open memory s book And search the bygone past To live again those treasures stored Within our hearts, while life shall last. Craig McKinlay October 18, 1961 December 17, 1977 2 - MEMORIAL Fondly, We Dedicate The 1980 Viking To The Fine Arts Department Mrs. Shirley McCall Before teaching full-time at Marysville High School , Mrs. McCall was Art Co-ordinator in all of the Marysville elementary , junior high , and high schools. Her 25 years of service to MHS will forever be recalled as throngs of students enroll in the program offered each year , with each section being filled rapidly . While furthering her own background in ceramics , Mrs. McCall developed various courses in ceramics and crafts for our Art Department. This is a tribute to a great teacher and a great lady . Mr. Charles Salvo Since 1947 when an elementary student passed into the fourth grade , he has been allowed to begin the study of a band instrument with Mr. Salvo. It wasn’t until 1978 when the new band room was supposed to be ready that Mr. Salvo became a full-time teacher at Marysville High School. When several students requested a music theory class , Mr. Salvo stayed after school with them to teach it. Also , the Stage Band was an after-school and noon feature before it became part of our regular curriculum. As director of the Marching Band , he was a familiar face on the football field to students and townspeople. Thousands have enjoyed his Concert Band. Planning programs , half-time activities , arranging music , practicing after school - all add up to a fine , dedicated teacher. A great deal of work went into making the opening performance in the newly refurbished auditorium a success. Committee chairmen were kept busy for six weeks as the managers took care of all the small details. Greg Saffee, our Student Director , put in many long hours along with Miss Butler , our Director. All new flats were made by Scott Stevens to match the beautiful new auditorium. “The Perfect Idiot” is a comedy about a group of high school students and their problems. The excellent representation by the actors was a definite plus to the final product. The play received raving reviews from all who attended. 1. Linda Barnard Daniel Tennyson 2. Deb Cochran Stage Manager JUNIOR PLA Y -99 Leadership Is Nothing New When the Junior Class Advisors were asked their opinion of the new school addition , their comments were as follows: Mr. Puskarich - “The new addition may mean the difference between a divided school and one in which student spirit has multiplied.” Mr. Meier - “I feel that the improvements made within this school are excellent. More detail to the finished product should have been observed.” Ms. Riherd - “Our new facilities make working with students an even greater pleasure.” Mr. Braun — “Great! I’ll be glad when it’s over!” Mr. Katerberg - “The new addition greatly increases the size of the building, which is a mixed blessing. While there are new and improved facilities for many classes, it is much more difficult to daily see teachers whose rooms are located in the new wing. The Junior year of any class is always the busiest. Not only does it keep the students busy , but the advisors too. The action starts off on September with the concession stand. Ms. Riherd and Mr. Puskarich were the co-ordinators of this. Next came the task of Homecoming floats. Miss Arno and Mr. Meier were very involved as the advisors for this activity. Mr. Sazehn was busy during the winter months with the Junior Prom. Mr. and Mrs. Elsholz helped chaperone the dance , and Mr. Puskarich was there taking pictures as usual. The Junior Play followed involving a magnitude of students. The year ended with a money-making project. Mr. Elsholz was chief advisor again this year. With the help of these advisors and many more , our Junior year went very smoothly. 100 - JUNIOR ADVISORS To Those Who Care Mr. Elsholz - “The new addition to MHS blends quite nicely with the original structure, but is more efficient and practical than the older units. Wider halls, recessed doors, and the use of modern engineering materials add to the positive feeling many people have for the addition.” Mrs. Elsholz - “The colorful new school addition provides us with some much needed space and improvements.” Miss Arno — “The language lab is a definite plus. It, along with the more modern look of the whole building, has changed the atmosphere and attitude of everyone. The inconveniences of the past two years were obviously worthwhile.” Mr. Yon - “Whoopee!! I’m glad to have it.” Mr. Houck - “The new additions to MHS have certainly proven to be a ‘shot in the arm’ to teachers, students, and the comm unity. A better, improved environment for learning makes for better education.” Mr. Sazehn - “Not all of us were affected by the change. There is still room for improvement in the old section of the high school.” JUNIOR ADVISORS - 101 Juniors Steer Their Way Standing: Dennis Socha, Kathy Hart, Jill Rose. Sitting: Lori Wilson, Bonnie Smarch, Tammy Mason, Pam Evans. Your Junior year in high school is one of the more active. This year we started off right with the construction of our 2nd place float. They held an Early Spring Concert in March featuring songs from the musical Pippin. There were two solos: one by Debbie Cochran and one by Senior Joe Hurley. On St. Patrick ’s Day , since the choir room is green , the choirs had a St. Patrick’s party. At the end of May they had another spring concert. He Climbs The Highest Mrs. Campbell - I am very pleased with having my own office and room which is used only for vocal music. Also, I appreciate the opportunity to perform in the newly renovated auditorium. Mrs. Heyboer - The new addition has made many positive changes to an already great school. Miss Casterline - Fantastic! It certainly gives everyone a sense of pride. The new school addition was a big “hit” with teachers as well as students. Teachers now have facilities to make learning fun and educational. When asking teachers how they felt about the new addition , they all responded differently. Mr. Jackson - The new school is beautiful, but students make the school. 132 - SOPHOMORE ADVISORS Who Helps Another Up Mr. Lindke - The new school addition is Mr. MacDonald - No Comment just one more ingredient that makes Marysville High School one of the best schools in the state. Mrs. McCall - The only drawback to a new building is that new students and teachers never had to put up with the old. Hopefully, they will treat it with kindness and respect. Sophomores expressed dedication when ordering class rings. Rings were ordered in September and Sophomores received them in December. Sophomores received honorable mention in the 1979-1980 Homecoming Float Competition. Miss Mullen — Rooms are nice size, but color combinations are not in harmony. Also, I don t see my fellow teachers as often. Mr. Suprenant - Marysville High School Mr. Wheeler - No Comment is a beautiful place. The new addition is a credit to everyone in the school system.
