With Ann Randall taking charge of the committee, Homecoming ’74 became a super success. Following this, the council worked on getting a new stereo sound system for the school and then went on to other activities. Next came the annual Christmas dance headed by Daniel Hyslop and Sandy Miller. With snow on the ground, a song in the heart and music by Freeman James, everyone left in the yuletide spirit. After semester break, work was begun on a Spring Carnival to break the monotony after basketball. In addition to other activities such as assemblies, the council also sponsored the annual Viking Week. A few of the pictures of Viking Week ’73 are featured on this page. A Viking march through the streets of Marysville, followed by a bonfire, sparked off the Homecoming Festivities of 1973. A snake dance led the team and students of M.H.S. to free refreshments donated by the Student Council. Once underway, the Homecoming Parade proved to be a success. The parade took a new route this year, which included all of the elementary schools. During halftime ceremonies, tension filled the stadium, as everyone waited for the 1973 Homecoming Queen, Karen Erno, to be announced. After the exciting 14-12 victory win over Chippewa Valley, everyone was in high spirits for the dance which followed. The band, Innermist, helped to make the dance theme, “Memories are Made of This,” come true for all who attended. Memories Are Made Of This Terri Rutkauske lent her charm and personality to M.H.S. Homecoming as a representative of the class of ’74. She was escorted by Senior John Jeffries. Viking “fish” held their third annual Swim-A-Thon, setting the goal at $1,000. This goal was achieved plus more. Total amount taken in was $1,100. The profits of the Swim-A-Thon went toward the purchase of a scoreboard time clock. The Swim-A-Thon was sponsored by students and other patrons of swimming. During the Sterling Heights meet, one member of the team, Jim Philp, broke the record for the 50-yard freestyle. In doing so, he qualified for state finals. Swim Timettes also had a busy year. They prepared breakfast for the team on all home meet days. Timettes also decorated the bus for the last swim meet. The Marysville wrestlers had a lot to contend with this season: 1. Lack of participation 2. Lack of spectator participation 3. A shortage of heavy wrestlers in the upper weight classes. In spite of all the negative factors they had to contend with, fine performances were turned in consistently by those who wrestled. As the coach, I am very proud of those young men who grew up enough in the short period of time that we were together to realize that you only get out of something what you put into it. The men who comprised the wrestling team this year put a tremendous amount of time and hard work into a program, and I am sure as a result of this involvement they have all become bigger and better men, as well as a tribute to our school and community. At the conclusion of the walk there were lots of sore muscles and blistered feet. Nevertheless, the group seemed to boil over with enthusiasm as they cheered our team to a victory. Painting spirit signs and decorating the stadium and gym also occupied Pep Club members during their after school hours. Pep Club set up a new merit system this year. Members receive points for each sports activity they attend. Those who have earned at least eighty percent of points possible will receive an award at the end of the year. 84 VIKING SPIRIT TRAIN ! If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I’d save every day like a treasure and then, Again, I would spend them with you. CLASS MOTTO How far back can memory reach? How much longer will it last? Memories of formulas Memory of friends People and places The time of our lives ... These were the days of the future we shared How long will it last ... Now that they’re passed. CLASS FLOWER Rose CLASS COLORS Sky Blue and Ivory White But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them. I’ve looked around enough to know That you’re the one I want to go Through time with. If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty Except for the memory Of how they were answered by you. A TIME FOR . . GUIDANCE MRS. SHIRLEY MC CALL CHIEF ADVISOR THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black, Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. by Robert Frost MRS. They handled all the worries and responsibilities of their jobs calmly and competently. One of the major responsibilities c ame du ri ng football season. The junior class was allotted the concession stand to make some money for the class treasury. The whole homecoming affair had to be supervised, the junior prom organized, and they did not let us down. Our junior class steering committee this year knew no bounds! During homecoming season, the materials for the float, a wagon, and a garage to build it in had to be found. They were. All their efforts, coupled together with those of the students, proved successful. The big, striped bumble-bee brought in a well-deserved first place. Perhaps the secret of their success was that they wanted to get involved in as many activities as possible. They did. Theresa Gardner, Secretary; Joe Schulte, Vice-President; Cindy Klann, Treasurer. Skip Murphy’s house was .the scene where a giant Mickey Mouse Clock was formed for the homecoming activities, with Gary Hill presiding over the events. “Mickey” placed third, giving the class a ten-dollar gain. Lovely Angela Koppelberger represented her class with pride as she participated in the evening festivities with her escort Ken Sygit. Sophomores were given a choice of many ring styles when orders were placed in September. Everyone was delighted with the results as the rings came before Christmas. Thanks go to the advisors for the support they gave the Sophomore class throughout the year. They are Mr. Philp, Chief Advisor; Mrs. Bellow, Mrs. Bums, Mr. Hadden, Miss Heckman, Mr. Patterson, Mr. Pell, Mr. Skrzyniarz, and Mr. Venia. The first basketball game started the Sophomore winter activities off with a dance after the game, and during the game, keeping track of the spectators ' coats. So phomores ended a good year with the yearly class party in May. STEERING COMMITTEE: Joan Caro lan. Pat Buriev, President Gary Hill Kim Zepp. Sue Collard.
