TH.‘ STAFF PRESENTS. . . THE 1971 VIKING MARYSVILLE, HIGH SCHOOL Marysville, Michigan 2 All I could see from where I stood Was three long mountains and a wood; I turned and looked another way, And saw three islands in a bay. So with my eyes I traced the line Of the horizon, thin and fine, Straight around till I was come Back to where I ' d started from; And all I saw from where I stood Was three long mountains and a wood. Over these things I could not see; These were the things that bounded me; And I could touch them with my hand. Almost, I thought, from where I stand. And all at once things seemed so small My breath came short, and scarce at all. But, sure, the sky is big, I said; Miles and miles above my head; So here upon my back I ' ll lie And look my fill into the sky. And so I looked, and, after all. The sky was not so very tall. The sky, I said, must somewhere stop, And-sure enough!-! see the top! The sky, I thought, is not so grand; I ' most could touch it with my hand! And, reaching up my hand to try, I screamed to feel it touch the sky. I screamed, and-lo! -Infinity Came down and settled over me; And, pressing of the Undefined The definition on my mind, Held up before my eyes a glass Through which my shrinking sight did pass Until it seemed I must behold I immensity made manifold; Whispered to me a word whose sound Deafened the air for worlds around, And brought unmuffled to my ears The gossiping of friendly spheres, The creaking of the tented sky, The ticking of Eternity. The world stands out on either side No wider than the heart is wide; Above the world is stretched the sky, - No higher than the soul is high. The heart can push the sea and land Farther away on either hand; The soul can split the sky in two. And let the face of God shine through. from Renascence Edna St. Vincent Millay 3 We dedicate our 1971 Viking to you: To the loyal supporters who cheered or cried for our teams at a sports events. Council Gives The Students A Voice The 1970-71 Student Council started the year off right with a beautiful 50th year Homecoming celebration. The committee, headed by Cindy MacDonald, decided on the theme ' Those Were the Days. The parade for the public and students of Marysville made Homecoming 1970 a great success. The annual Christmas Dance was next on the agenda. Dreams of a White Christmas was chaired by Mary Thompson. The dance, which was held at the Marysville Intermediate School, was highlighted by a visit from our very own Santa Claus. The many accomplishments of this year ' s Student Council were the renting of vending machines, the selling of beanies and T-shirts, and also the establishment of a noon-hour program in the recreation room. The new members: Janette Venia, Mary Thompson, Lynn Schuman, Jane Harmon, Janet Reid, Pam Bryan. Quill and Scroll is an international honorary society for high school journalists. The purpose of the society is to reward and encourage individual achievement in journalism. The Omer P. Bartow chapter of Quill and Scroll was chartered on October 15, 1964. To become a member, a student must be of junior or senior qualification and in the upper third of his high school class. He also must have done distinctive work in some phase of high school journalism. He must be recommended for membership by the advisor of journalism work in his high school and he must be approved as being worthy of membership by the society ' s executive officer. Membership in Quill and Scroll involves a responsibility which members must not forget— the duty to devote oneself to the welfare of the school and to any other group or community to which a person may later belong. To be a leader in a real sense, a member must acquire background for judging and interpreting the events of the day. This year ' s radiant Queen Wendy Miller reigned over the memorable 1970 Homecoming. Surrounding her is her lovely court. Standing at Queen Wendy ' s right is Mary Sawdon, a most enthusiastic Freshman majorette. Continuing clockwise. Sophomore Melanie French represented her class not only as a homecoming representative, but also as a class officer. Wendy Breckner, a most charming Senior candidate, represented her class well. Lovely Linda Siler is the third senior candidate, who, with her warm smile, graced the court. Also a senior member of the court is Elisabeth Morand, who is our exchange student from France. Lovely Beth Knox, representing the Junior Class, added the final touch of elegance. in 112 Homecoming No Lion; We ' re Roaring for a Victory placed first in the annual homecoming float competition. The Senior float was constructed at Janet Reid ' s home and many Seniors contributed their time and effort in making the float successful. First prize of twenty-five dollars was awarded to the Senior Class. Volkswagens disguised as baby bulls illustrated the spirit of the Varsity Club. Number 36 represents our mighty fullback, Don Goniwicha. Tying for third place was the float by the Sophomores which was located at Denise Lapointe s home. The Sophomore Class received a prize of ten dollars. The Cheerleaders ' float, entitled Cheer ' Em On To Victory, was another competing entry this year. It was assembled at Janette Venia ' s home. Homecoming festivities began with the Thursday evening Viking March. The cheerleaders and the Varsity football players led the march through Marysville, stopped at the designated class areas, and then proceeded to the stadium for a short, but spirited, pep rally. Friday followed with a parade in the afternoon organized by our Student Council and led by our ever-faithful MHS Band. The parade required much planning and hard work, but it paid off with the beautiful showing of homecoming floats and, of course, our lovely class representatives. Mr. Viking made his first appearance of the season at the afternoon pep rally. Dean Smith carried the head on his shoulders and also took delight in wearing the ancient Anglo-Saxon attire which was designed and constructed by Senior Bob Rowe. Spirit rose sky high and the afternoon pep rally proved to be a success. Highlights Only the Strong Survive was the Junior Class theme. The Juniors were awarded fifteen dollars for their second place showing in the contest. The assembling of the float took place at Chris Goodmen ' s home, where much planning was done to create such an original theme and design. The other Varsity Club contribution was a VW representing powerful halfback Number 48, Ron Kukulka. Spirit was certainly plentiful at the game. Cheering echoed through the stadium and our team played as proud Vikings should. We emerged as victors, with the score Marysville 41-St. Clair 12. Pre-game activities included the presentation of homecoming queens from the past ten years. Half-time ceremonies provided excitement for all. The speaker announced the float winners and the band advanced to its place on the field. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of our 1970 Homecoming Queen-lovely Wendy Miller. Queen Wendy and her court reigned over the annual homecoming dance where music was provided by a rock band called the ' ' Northwest Passage. Each representative, accompanied by her escort, walked the golden path to the throne. Cindy MacDonald, together with the Student Council, was largely responsible for the well-planned organization of homecoming events. In years to come, memories of Homecoming 1970 will fondly be recalled. Also tying for third place was the Art Club float. The construction site was Cornelia Bishop ' s home, and the Art Club received a ten-dollar prize. Although their float failed to place, the Freshmen showed a great deal of homecoming spirit. The float was constructed at Pam Partain ' s home. The 1970-71 Varsity Cheerleaders have been very active. During the summer they attended Camp All-American at Walden Woods, Hartland, Michigan. Our Cheerleaders won two blue ribbons - one for their pom-pom routine and one for talent. While attending camp, the girls learned new cheers, chants and mounts which were more difficult. During the year ' s pep meetings the Cheerleaders entertained us with their two new pom-pom routines - one to the theme record Hawaii 5-0 and the other to Aquarius. The Cheerleaders came up with original themes like Breakfast of Champions. To each of the boys on the basketball team and the coach, they gave a box of Wheaties. This year the Cheerleaders took part in Homecoming activities by entering a big megaphone in the float competition. In addition to the float, the Cheerleaders surprised the Varsity football team by decorating the Varsity locker room. Balloons, posters and crepe paper were used to pep the team to a Viking victory. Our Cheerleaders also contributed to a charitable cause by selling spirit tags. MHS Cheerleaders were very energetic this year.
